Eagles hired Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator.

He hasn't put pen to paper yet but an agreement is in place. Schwartz last coached in 2014 when he served under Doug Marrone as the Bills' defensive coordinator. Steve Spagnuolo was also considered for the job but the Giants wouldn't give the Eagles permission to interview him. Schwartz interviewed for the Jaguars' defensive coordinator opening on Monday but ultimately chose to team up with Doug Pederson in Philadelphia. The Eagles will transition into a 4-3 scheme under Schwartz.

Great hire and we dodged a bullet by missing out on Spagnuolo.

David Shaw would be another college coach highly sought after.

I think Mr Shaw likes his Wednesday afternoon tee time too much....49ers apparently did make an enquiry but he seems happy in the college ranks.

Hey Brasher, what did you think of Mangini's performance, seemed to have done a good job considering.

I'd like for the 49ers to keep him for some continuity in the development of the younger players.

He installed a new system and some of the breakdowns in assignments were monumental early in the season but they seemed to eliminate a lot of those as the season wore on.

He was always playing off 8 yards this year with the loss of Justin Smith, Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, Chris Borland, Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox. But the 49ers have a lot of young guys that need to now start filling these shoes, Armstead, Harold and Tartt were taken in the first 3 rounds in last year's draft.

As expected, pass rush was near non-existent and the corners have an annoying habit of losing the track of the ball in flight. At times last year, the 49ers, once the best tackling team in the league, forgot all about how to tackle for long stretches of games.

So if you add new scheme, mass exit of players and of course all the offensive 3 and outs keeping them on the field longer (this is a positive with Chip coming to town as the 49ers are already used to losing the time of possession).

Baalke has always been better drafting defense than offense as well so I would look to the the team again drafting defense heavy (as long as they fix the oline in FA).

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Lions RBs coach Curtis Modkins is a candidate for the 49ers' offensive-coordinator vacancy.

Modkins is also the Lions' running-game coordinator, but he might not want to make that known after the Lions finished dead last in rushing offense this season at just over 83 yards per game. Modkins has been coaching in the NFL for the past eight years and has coordinator experience from his days under Chan Gailey in Buffalo. Coach Chip Kelly is going to call plays in San Francisco.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports the Rams have asked the Eagles permission to interview Pat Shurmur for their opening at offensive coordinator.

It looks like Frank Reich is going to take over as the Eagles' offensive coordinator so Shurmur should be available. Shurmur was the Rams' offensive coordinator under head coach Steve Spagnuolo from 2009-2010. The Rams still desperately need a quarterback but hiring Shurmur would at least be a step in the right direction.

Cowboys DBs coach Jerome Henderson will interview for the Jaguars' defensive coordinator job.

Henderson previously interviewed for the Browns' head coaching job but was passed over in favor of Hue Jackson. The Jags have been searching for a replacement for Bob Babich, who was fired after the season. Jim Schwartz interviewed with Jacksonville on Monday but isn't an option anymore after accepting the Eagles' defensive coordinator position.

Titans promoted Dick LeBeau to assistant head coach/defensive coordinator.

He'll take over for Ray Horton, who left to become the Browns' defensive coordinator. It's been a strange offseason for the Titans. So far they've kept interim coach Mike Mularkey, added 61-year-old Terry Robiskie as offensive coordinator and promoted LeBeau, who turns 79 in September. Maybe they'll "lure" Joe Gibbs out of retirement next. 2016 should be another forgettable year in Tennessee.

Eagles hired Greg Lewis as wide receivers coach.

Lewis has a history with Philadelphia, having played there from 2003-08 and working for the Eagles as a coaching intern in 2012. He was an assistant receivers coach with the Saints in 2015. Philadelphia's previous wide receivers coach, Bob Bicknell, has already joined Chip Kelly's staff in San Francisco.

The Eagles will retain Duce Staley as running backs coach under new coach Doug Pederson.

Considered one of the best position coaches around the league, Staley even got a courtesy head-coaching interview from the Eagles before they chose Pederson. Staley played on teams with Pederson in Philadelphia, and the two coached together in Philly before Pederson left for Kansas City with Andy Reid.

Bills hired Kathryn Smith as quality control-special teams coach.

Smith has been working for coach Rex Ryan for seven years as an administrative assistant and player personnel assistant. The Bills and Smith are making history with her becoming the first full-time female assistant coach in the NFL. The Cardinals broke the door down for females last summer by hiring Jen Welter as an assistant LBs coach, but she was only hired for camp.

Giants hired Frank Cignetti as quarterbacks coach.

Cignetti was fired as the Rams' offensive coordinator after Week 13. He was the Rams' quarterbacks coach for three previous years and is probably more suited for position work. Cignetti will work closely with Eli Manning, who set career highs in both touchdowns and quarterback rating in 2015.

Eagles released OC Pat Shurmur from his contract.

It's just a formality as the Eagles have already hired Frank Reich as their new offensive coordinator. LBs coaches Bill McGovern and Rick Minter were also released from their contracts. Shurmur is now free to pursue other coaching jobs and should land on his feet quickly. The Rams have already asked to interview Shurmur for their opening at offensive coordinator.

Browns hired Ray Horton as defensive coordinator.

He'll join an overhauled staff that now includes HC/OC Hue Jackson, RBs coach Kirby Wilson, and assistants Pep Hamilton and Al Saunders. Horton's return to the Browns had been anticipated, with the Nashville Tennessean first to report Horton would be the Browns' next DC. There's much work to be done after the Browns allowed the sixth-most yards in the NFL in 2015. They were gashed on the ground and an underachieving, injury-plagued defense in the air.

The 49ers have offered Mike Vrabel the defensive coordinator job, according to ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini.

At this point, the Niners are just waiting for him to say yes or no. The ex-Patriot has spent the last two years as the Texans' linebackers coach. If Vrabel joins Chip Kelly in San Francisco, it would leave Eric Mangini out of a job.

Eagles hired ex-Chargers OC Frank Reich as offensive coordinator.

The job had been his to lose from the start. Reich, 54, was fired earlier this month and made the scapegoat for the Chargers' offensive woes in 2015 when they finished 30th in rushing. Reality was San Diego's offensive line was ripped to shreds by injuries, and Melvin Gordon was a rookie. Reich isn't going to call plays for the Eagles, as new coach Doug Pederson will do that, but he'll be heavily involved in game-planning with Pederson.

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports Mike Shanahan was passed over for the 49ers' head-coaching job because he didn't want Colin Kaepernick.

49ers' Hall of Famers were calling the front office in support of Shanahan, and he appeared to be the favorite deep into the search. Things unraveled when Shanahan reportedly said he wanted the team to move on from Kaepernick and use its first-round pick on a new quarterback. GM Trent Baalke and the higher-ups in the organization believe Kap can be "salvaged," which led to Chip Kelly getting the job instead of Shanahan. Kap is the favorite to start Week 1.

Eagles hired ex-Browns OC John DeFilippo as QBs coach.

DeFilippo was a semi-popular man the past couple weeks; he interviewed for the 49ers' head-coaching vacancy and the Rams' OC job before linking up with Doug Pederson in Philadelphia. DeFilippo was Derek Carr's QBs coach as a rookie before his one-year stint as the Browns' play-caller. Despite the Browns' tough season, "Flip" managed career years out of Gary Barnidge and Travis Benjamin, got more out of Johnny Manziel, and turned Josh McCown back into a successful bridge quarterback. Free agent Sam Bradford would be wise to re-sign in Philly.
