Bucking Beads
Brownlow Medallist
We are pretty desperate for a Superstar talent on our list. Hipwood for me could really be the guy but I think a Midfielder who can develop into a superstar is a must for our list in the next year or 2.

You'd be absolutely right, probably 5 players max (I couldn't even think of any but gary rohan and johanissan to be honest either), 10.95 is almost national level for the 100m sprintI'd be absolutely astounded if there was more than 3-4 AFL players who could run sub-11 for 100m without specifically training for it, and quite possibly none.

I have never watched McGrath so he may be legitimately quick, but as a general point speed over 100m isn't necessarily a reliable indicator of speed on the field, as odd as that seems. You'd be absolutely right, probably 5 players max (I couldn't even think of any but gary rohan and johanissan to be honest either), 10.95 is almost national level for the 100m sprint
Speed on the field is absolutely a different thing, at the moment I run 11.45 over 100m but it doesn't translate that much to the sports field (because my acceleration is shocking) and acceleration is whats really important in AFL (and many other sports for that matter), hence why we were willing to trade down to get Ainsworth. Agility would also play a huge part. I guess what I'm saying is that what's most important is speed over 20m rather than 100m, because of all the congestion in AFL.I have never watched McGrath so he may be legitimately quick, but as a general point speed over 100m isn't necessarily a reliable indicator of speed on the field, as odd as that seems.
My fastest time over 100m was 10.98 (a long time and quite a few beers ago!!) but I was never particularly quick on the field, and a teammate was in the same boat.
I think a fast mind that buys you extra space on the field is of higher value IMO

I think with Ainsworth the big thing for me is he has X-factor written all over him. He looks like the type of player that could blow a game wide open in the space of a few minutes.Yeah McGrath is super quick but Ainsworth has that exciting Dangerfield like, powerful burst of speed that helps him escape an opponent or bust out of a pack.
Yep he's a big game player with x-factor/star factor written all over him. I think he'll generate the same level of hype as guys like Rioli/Betts/Stringer/Wingard. They are all exciting players capable of winning a match in the space of 5 minutes. Let's just hope he is more consistent than some of those guys and the hype remains justified(Unlike Stringer who is still hyped up whenever he gets within 10m of the ball despite the fact that he had a poor season in 2016!)I think with Ainsworth the big thing for me is he has X-factor written all over him. Of course drafting comes with risks but he strikes me as a match winner. (Plus he is mates with Schache.....)
Sorry, I was there, there were no legal times ,the following wind was up to 6 at times, and minimally over 3.the !egal times are 2,with a followingwind .Anyone who knows the Lakeside arena knows the 100 and hurdles usually have a tailwind, today it was a bloody gale.Kids in the 14 and 15 ages were running 11.I think McGrath was wind assisted about 5 at the time !I'm a fan of his but the 100 and hurdles times were a joke.I'd be absolutely astounded if there was more than 3-4 AFL players who could run sub-11 for 100m without specifically training for it, and quite possibly none.
I would surmise in saying that 100m speed is a good thing for a defender, whereas burst speed is a good thing for a forward.

Exactly that! If we were to somehow snag McGrath with pick 3, almost impossible now with the giants holding that spot he definitely possesses that flare and eagerness to attack. However I think given the right environment/training I think R. Williams could burst onto the scene and become our JJ. Coming of the rookie list for his debut definitely looked good and confident running rampant through the gold coast midfield. Still can't get over that fend off of hisI'm pretty sure McGrath has that Johannisen-like acceleration off half-back, but what's more important is having the guts to use that burst speed to break the lines instead of taking the safer option which is why I love JJ.
I certainly noticed Ainsworth's acceleration a couple of times in that All-Star game a couple of weeks ago, he's definitely who I would take for us at 3 on what I've seen.

People are going to think I'm nuts, but I don't want McCluggage.
Andrew McGrath only ran 3.20 in the 20m sprint (which is extremely average) while Ainsworth took out 2nd with 2.90 and Allison 1st with 2.87. So after a bit of a panic I won't be losing sleep over it at all.
I wasn't there but have seen some vision. I suppose the consolation is that he won the hurdles quite convincingly and assume they all had the same wind assistance.Sorry, I was there, there were no legal times ,the following wind was up to 6 at times, and minimally over 3.the !egal times are 2,with a followingwind .Anyone who knows the Lakeside arena knows the 100 and hurdles usually have a tailwind, today it was a bloody gale.Kids in the 14 and 15 ages were running 11.I think McGrath was wind assisted about 5 at the time !I'm a fan of his but the 100 and hurdles times were a joke.
Ahh got the numbers mixed up, shouldn't have done it off the top of my head. Still 3.02 isn't very quick over 20mMcGrath ran a 3.02.
McGrath plays with excellent pace. He is not the quickest over 5m but he is good and once up and going he is very quick and elusive. You can criticise a few things with McGrath's game but pace is certainly not one of them.
It's a wonder he's not weaving in and out through the midfield.Imo the most impressive thing about McGrath is his agility. The way he weaves in and out of traffic and dances around corralling opponents is phenomenal.
