Gun !!!! Top 8 though and we will miss out by a fair bit . Our pick will need to be a guy that's not complete player but can project into a complete player with good coaching
Sometimes the incomplete player has a higher ceiling than the complete player at U18 level

I know, I love him, very much the complete package. Was just seeing if Wayne was turned off by his height :P

Won the medal for best in the whole carnival .... Plays at max intensity without polish . Lots to like and a fair bit not to with disposal and class issues v similar to Dunstan IMO
I'll admit haven't watched much of Championships yet ......but first impression of Graham that hit me was his thick legs ......normally associated with slower players & if he has that shape at U18 level, i'd question the amount of upside ......but hell, that's a 1 minute snapshot

You will be impressed with his work rate , wills himself to every contest and plays like Joel Selwood intensity without the polish

But will he be able to do that at AFL level speed of the game ? .....getting quicker by the year

He will definitely be an AFL player - no issue there - a given low risk pick, character and leadership etc

Just depends on whether there is higher untapped talent they think can be nurtured

Let me know what you think after watching some footage

No problems .......so long to go, many players develop after the Championships .....the rankings will change significantly

No doubt but only 6-8 games to go before judgement . Very interesting , lots of depth and limited top end talent in this draft

Seen players rocket up the rankings after the TAC U18 Grand Final .......so many come from the clouds a month out from the Draft ......i am amazed considering clubs say they've tracked players since U16, that opinions ARE dramatically changed in the last month

Does tracking players from younger age groups help or hinder?
IMO it has little bearing .....they can stop growing (Sellar) ......stop developing ......or lose the work effort

It's all about the final year ......and often about the final 6 months

It's more about tracking their character and family upbringing etc... Gives more scope to get more info the earlier you track them

Also good to see improvement curve or the opposite
I'd agree with all that but add the proviso that injuries can intervene and their impact need to be taken into account regarding that 'curve'......this applies to several in this year's draft especially Jarrod Berry whose recovery from a quite serious shoulder injury has impeded his preparation this season......If he's still there at our pick I'd be wrapped to select him. Have a sneaky feeling the GCS will be right into him with his unquestionable character and leadership traits, something they really lack...

Hugh McCluggage has also been managing a back complaint this season but has still managed to play some pretty special footy.....I'm pretty confident he is the one out and out star in this draft.

What you think of berry's kicking and speed/agility?

these rankings these players are rocketing up aren't the club's though, correct?

I read some reckon his kicking is only average but I definitely don't go along with that, IMO he's the complete package, good pace and great in traffic, if he goes outside the top 10 someone is getting an absolute bargain. WILL play midfield for certain so anyone that just classes him as a rebounding defender going forward will be in for a surprise.

Get a better idea what players are on the club radars when the AFL releases the names of those invited to the Draft Combine...if their names not on that list they will struggle to get drafted. From memory the list is announced around the end of July with each club naming 50 players they want to assess and a player must receive at least 5 nominations from different clubs to be selected. If not selected for the AFL Combine their next option is the State Combines.

Edit :
As you can see most of the players invited last year got drafted, not many not on that list got drafted. The Pies "smokey" Brayden Sier a noted exclusion.
Also dispels the argument that Tom Doedee wasn't on other club's radars too because at least 5 clubs must have nominated him to get a spot.

no ...supposed draft experts ....phantom drafts

supposed is exactly my point, I'm just a bit surprised that you'd drag the clubs into it and question their tracking that's all. Obviously their assessments are better than the half-arsed Aussie sports journalists (what a wicket they're on).

granted there are one or two who have some idea, or some good contacts, but 90% of the stuff written on the draft is just recycled group think.

Any chance of Witherden lasting to our first pick. I know he is out for this year with his leg but we took a punt on Lever too. I also like Berry as an option. What are you thoughts on Taranto and Rotham? These 2 look very impressive.

Are they dramatically changed, or is it that the amatuer draft watchers/media only notice the late? Thus we only hear about them late.

I agree with WW on pure outside players. Imo, even the best pure outsiders are worth a late first rounder at best. So many fail to impact at AFL level, think James Aish. I'd looks at good ones from the second round onwards, no higher.

On Scharenberg Brenton Phillips said this
“He’s your classic inside midfielder who works really hard both ways and finds plenty of the ball. A class act who is one of those unique footballers in that he doesn’t look like he’s working particularly hard but once you get his GPS data you realise he has.’’

On Graham he said this
“A tough inside midfielder who is a bit of a bull. He goes really hard and attacks the contest and the player with the ball with ferocity. When he wins the footy he is able to use it pretty well too.’’

We need an inside mid this draft.
For me I would want us to take either Scharenberg or Graham.
