As you know I've been on the McGrath bandwagon since early in the season, IMO he could turn out to be the absolute gun player of this draft, talent on so many fronts, elite endurance, good pace, reasonably good kick, can play attacking defender or lock down on an opponent and suffocate them [ask Ben Ainsworth], clearance machine when in the midfield, athletically elite.....as close to the complete package as any in this draft. I have no doubt if he was another 8 - 10 cm taller he be almost a certainty to go No.1.

Jack Roughsedge is the smoky, injuries have cruelled his career thus far but when he can get on the park he can dominate clearances and has footy smarts in spades, his handball in tight sets up so many plays.....will be interested to see if he's fit enough to test at the Draft Combine.

I like pictures like this one. Eyes tell the desire. They are focused to the next target not rolled back in his head or desperately looking at what got him.

Will go far.

I guess I should have made it clearer that player pictured is Jack Roughesedge who's my smoky in this draft. I'll edit it to that effect.

Can't say I'm surprised by this development, I knew the first time I saw Andrew McGrath play he was a very special footballer, as close to the complete package as you can get in this draft, he along with Hugh McCluggage are the real standouts for me in this draft. GWS look set to sell the farm to nab him..mind you they have multiple farms to trade with in thenext decade the way things are shaping. The AFL have let the genie out the bottle and it's going to take some extreme changes for them to get it back in the bottle. Sam Landsberger is normally on the money so it's most likely right!

GREATER Western Sydney could make a bold bid for Essendon’s No.1 draft pick as the Giants zero in on a replacement for Heath Shaw.

The Herald Sun understands the burgeoning club wants to rise up the order to help secure gun halfback Andy McGrath.

The Brighton Grammar school captain won 14 disposals in the final quarter last week to propel Sandringham Dragons into Sunday’s TAC Cup grand final.

McGrath, 18, plays in the mould of Western Bulldogs star Jason Johannisen and met the Giants last month.

Shaw, 31 in November, has won All-Australian honours the past two seasons and is contracted until 2018.

Recruiters believe that when Shaw retires McGrath could seamlessly fill the void.

The Bombers on Thursday confirmed they would trade the No.1 pick for the right price.
I thought it might be for Ainsworth but looking like McGrath and good stuff by GWS

North Ballarat Rebels players/draft prospects Willem Drew, Jarrod Korewha and James Gow playing for Koroit in the A Grade Grand Final against North Warrnambool in the Hampden Football League today.....Willem Drew dominating in the 2nd half, listening to it now on 3YB..Gerard Fitzgerald the Rebels coach just on saying there are plenty of the AFL Scouts there today watching the lads.

More than likely, goes missing too often and needs to find more ball IMO.
Bicks you just have to remember that juniors are not consistent generally .....once in an AFL environment & maturity that consistency usually gets ironed out

Adam Goodes .....pick 43 in his draft year specifically due to lack of consistency

There's other aspects of a players game ATS that are far more important

Is Vanables legitimate option to be there at 13 for us?
Draft order is not even close to being settled ......Phantom draft 4 weeks ago has English at #6 .....now 4 weeks later #18 .......nothing has really changed in that 4 weeks, which says the so called phantom callers are as confused on orders as the rest of us

Very close to being settled

The clubs are almost there , phantoms mean nothing

The combine is barely taken into account , just dotting i's and crossing t's

Ps agree re venables , will thrive in environment

Sorry .....with all due respect rubbish

I've seen players rocket up the order on the back of a TAC GF .....and players slide due to injury

You are giving far too much credence to a concept that recruiting depts are somehow professional .....combines add maybe 10% to the picture, however they are not irrelevant, as you're hinting

PS ....the concept of taking best available is also a fantasy ......if clubs were almost fixed with their draft strategy ......then trade week wouldn't affect that strategy, and that clearly is not the case

With respect to what?

Phantom drafters or media expectations.

Because we all know you don't know how clubs ranked players at any stage of the season.

Venables will be brilliant in our environment. Has burst speed out of stoppages, great contested ball winner, great tackler, great overhead mark, great forward game. Just needs to build a tank (our great fitness dept will allow him to do this) and some consistency. Will be a very good AFL midfielder with us.

I honestly have not seen the kid play but just reading about his attributes suggests to me there is a lot of upside there especially in our environment where we have to say that one thing we do really well is draft and develop players.

From all reports this draft is very good for midfield quality so I would prefer to keep our first round draft pick this year and trade next year's if we need to do it to recruit a ready made midfielder. That way we can still get a young developing midfielder who we can bring along and will be ready a year sooner than the 2017 pick.

Wouldn't mind getting Joe Atley in, now I've seen a bit more of him. Reminds me of Josh Dunkley, but with better efficiency by foot. Good overhead marking, great clearance work, great tackler, great leadership. Seems consistent and looks to have forward capability too.

I'd be happy with getting Venables and Atley to add to our midfield mix. Also keen on Fisher and Willem Drew, although I've mentioned them in the past I think.

Don't know if we need to draft any more outside mids? Reckon we have enough to work with, but if we did I'd draft Florent.

Very much agree with this. If we can develop those sides of Venables' game I mentioned, he could very well be a top-line midfielder in the comp.

Have always wanted to keep our 2016 pick to draft a mid, but I feel if we have the chance to get a ready-made mid this year, we need to trade this year's pick. This is because I feel we'll want to draft a KPF to develop with next year's 1st. I don't feel too bad about that though, the midfield talent runs very deep in this draft (assuming we can get a 2nd somewhere along the line).

This is correct .....therefore anyone saying they know that draft orders are almost set, also can't know that to be a correct statement

Id be happy with Atley with a 2nd rounder if we get back there and Florent with a 3rd only

Fisher is interesting , are we in danger of being too short in midfield ?!!

Venables and Drew would be a great haul !

They have a fair idea of the trades even and the players are ranked in total order and order by position ... It's just a bit of shuffling if trade surprises occur

Interesting to see why you don't rate Florent. Does tend to flash in and out of games, but is the type that already threatens to tear a game apart with his good disposal, tackling pressure for an outside mid, as well as having one of the best sidesteps in the draft class. Would be happy to pick him up somewhere in the 2nd round.

Fisher is a very skilled player. Reckon that, as long as we balance our midfield out with taller, bigger types, he'll work - just as Daniel does in the Dogs' midfield.
