I w
Not this year. We're bottom 4 for a few years yet mate.

Once we're pushing into the 8 on the backs of young talent alone we can look to trade and FA.

We need another 10 or so 1st rounders before we can even think about that.

This draft a key forward and a mid or two.

Once we have 2 key talls developing we can load up on mids over the next 2-3 drafts.

Then comes trades and FA.
7ld say we need a kpf and kpd this year.

They have 3 x 1st rounders ar present.

Plus whatever they get for WHE, McCarthy, Marchbank, Steele, Tomlinson, and Stewart. Maybe more.

That's at least 2 more 1st round picks in points there. Probably closer to 3.

And they look to reliably get first access to 4-5 first round kids via the academy with a 20 percent discount this year on top.

My gut tells me they'll get pick 2 from Freo for 8 and 15 and McCarthy. Freo will send 15 to the Hawks for Hill. Hawks to ontrade that pick and their own 1st to GCS for JOM.
I was asking about GWS' 2017 academy crop. I get the impression you're none the wiser than I on that. :P

Expect first round picks being traded by clubs for more established players, plenty of deals being thrown around as we speak!

Absolutely no stand out in the draft, poor year to have a top pick.

Clubs want to hold onto next years picks but willing to give up this years...

Agree gold coast in particular with all the first rounders they will have after losing prestia and most likely omeara theyl want ready made stars . And can still get their academy players .

I'd love for * to bid on Bowes with pick 1... and for GC17 to turn around and say "if you want him that bad, go for it!". It suddenly changes all aspects and means that Brodie or the scottish suitcase might still be there at pick 4.

Yes.

If a club develops a young Australian from an Asian or African background and wants to draft them, then they will receive a discount on a basis similar to the current bidding system. Clubs will be able to apply for draft discounts on other youngsters from non-English speaking backgrounds if they develop the player in a similar manner.

Unsure if it applies to all non-english speaking backgrounds or not. or just specifically African and Asian background kids.

It's supposed to be for first-generation Australians and immigrants from non-English speaking/non-traditional AFL backgrounds.

It's a mouthful, and supposedly has a lot of criteria for eligibility, but boiling it down to your first comment is treading dangerous ground, regardless of someone else's remarks.

No its not. The AFL commission specifically called out people with those backgrounds (and for the record, I support the initiative). Dont read something nefarious into something that isnt there.

Id like to see the actual criterea though. Has it been publicly released? 'Non-English speaking backgrounds' includes most Europeans (and many players with European backgrounds already have a strong representation in the AFL, like Italians and Greeks). Heck, you could include about half our side in the 70's and 80's and 90's under that criterea.

It hasn't. I wasn't accusing anyone of anything other than oversimplifying it, which leads to statements like your earlier one.

How can i do anything other than oversimplify it, if the actual critereon hasnt been released yet?

All I can go in is what the AFL have said, and they specifically called out kids with African and Asian backgrounds. Thats about the only info we have at present. Stop reading somthing nefarious in there.

That's my point mate, I'm not blaming you.

Cool man. Are there any large (Non European) migrant neighborhoods in the Northern Suburbs that fit the criterea?

When I lived in Melbourne last, the Northern suburbs were mainly Southern and Eastern European (Italy, Greece, Poland, Ukranian). Largely why we had so many Italians, Greeks and the odd Eastern European in our sides in the latter part of last century (under the old zoning rules). Sivagni, Cottagiio, Koutafides, Christou etc. We have a pretty decent representation in the Italian and Greek teams of the century. (Kouta is in both!)

Jesaulenko was Ukranian. Not sure about Bosustow. Had a few good Eastern European players. North Melbourne had a zone close to ours, and they landed Sam Kekovich (whos brother played for us for a bit) who's Serbian.

If we can do it, we should be trading hard into next years draft, not loading up on picks for this year.

It really depends on which draftees the club rates highly enough before you decide to keep some live picks this year.

You could throw a blanket over 25-30 of them as they all have similar strengths & weaknesses. This draft pool doesn't have any real standouts and I fear there will be a few clubs drafting players who don't make it, more so than in other years.

It would mostly be African and Asian, but there's Middle Eastern, Eastern European, Central and South American in the mix as well, all with a solid chance at fitting what the criteria seems to be about.

In the Northern suburbs? Does our academy cover Broady? Pretty sizeable Middle Eastern population up that way.

It'd certainly be an interesting scenario if we traded out a few players like Tuohy, Everitt and Casboult for 2017 picks, traded our third rounders for a few GWS lads and hit the draft with just 4, 22 and a Byrne upgrade.

Would mean holding on to guys like Whiley, Dick, Tutt, Foster etc. for another year, but might mean we replace them with better prospects 12 months down the line.

2016
OUT: Walker, Jamison, Tuohy, Everitt, Graham, Wood
IN: Ainsworth, Battle, Hoskin-Elliott, Stewart, Rookie, Rookie

2017
OUT: Tutt, Jones, Dick, Whiley, Foster, Thomas
IN: Pick 4, Pick 17 (Tuohy), Pick 22, Pick 28 (Casboult), Pick 32 (Everitt), Pick 40 etc. etc.

I imagine most people would be outraged if we extended those players for 2017, but it might actually be a better option for us if the 2017 draft prospects are rated as stronger than this year's, and could put us in a good position to trade up for an extra top 5 pick in 2017 if the top end is particularly good.

Im just not sure our zone has that many 'Non European + Non English speaking' background heavy areas in it.

Hopefully we're scouring the crap out of it for potential recruits though.
Our zone would have the most non English speaking backgrounds. Over half of muslims in Victoria would be in our zone. Also have the most aboriginals in the zone compared to others (Melbourne area). If we can develop these kids from a young age we could be sitting on a gold mine. Overall % wise I think we would have the most players to pick from. Developing them and getting them to play aussie rules is another thing. Soccer in Australia (especially Victoria) is very multi-cultural (most clubs have ethnic backgrounds) and hard to convince kids to play afl then soccer. The parents would prefer them to stick to their own.

Seriously?? Brunswick, Northcote, Thornbury & even Preston and Coburg have kicked out all the italians and Lebanese and is now a hipster only area and the outer north like Eltham, Warandyte, Mcleod, Bundoora, Greensborough is about as white anglo bogan as they come.
