Didn't think so immediately ......but yeah, there are some similarities .......at 194cm and the quickest over 20mtrs at the draft, the kid has some un-tapped talent
There's another kid called Josh Williams from GC academy who is fairly similar . Lightning quick and has a better season than Allison

Really? I've found he frequently hits targets. He is also more willing to kick the ball than handball it, which suggests confidence :thumbsu:
His kicking style just looks poor and not easy to change. I'd be staying away. His handballing doesn't look that clean either. Small sample size for me to look at but I don't see a player I'd be keen on.

We'd take scrimshaw on talent alone and it would help release smith eventually

Scrimshaw could be scary good if he develops
At best, you get a 193cm wingman with very good skills, agility and evasiveness. I'd love a Scrimshaw on our list, but if it's a choice between him and an inside, explosive mid like Venables (even though Scrimshaw is the more proven at this stage) - I'm taking Venables. Do agree with your assessment of Scrimshaw though, only query for me is that he isn't a contested ball winner.

Doesn't win much contested football.....
Maybe but as others have noted contested ball midfielders aren't going to have an effect over the next couple of years. With years in the gym maybe that will develop as he's quite slight.
The inside mids around our pick aren't going to be able to play inside for at least two years.

As above I don't think contested ball winner is enough to sway me away from the better player. We were better off getting a trade for a ready to go inside mid, this off season or next.

We were unable to get a ready-made one, though. We need to move on to the next best thing - one that can be a very good/great/elite player in a few years. Not ideal at all, but it's the cards we've been dealt.

No mid, whether it be Scrimshaw or Venables, will make an impact in year one. It's a combination of what we need and who will be the better player down the track.

Agreed. And from the highlights I've seen Schrimshaw looks the better player.

Ok, so now that i have almost calmed down about another pathetic trade 'week', where are the highlights of the top 20 kids we won't pick up while we go for someone else who everyone else thinks is a pick 40. Should we just take Jarman at 13 and say we got our man

Don't agree with this post. Our drafting has never been in question. I have no doubt who who we pick up with 13 will be a star.
Doedee looks a first round quality player based on his year.

1: Essendon - Hugh McCluggage - Outside Mid/Half Forward
2: GWS - Andrew McGrath - Half Back/Balanced Mid
3: Gold Coast - Jack Bowes - Balanced Mid
4: Brisbane - Ben Ainsworth - Small Forward
5: GWS - Will Setterfield - Inside Mid
6: Carlton - Will Brodie - Inside Mid
7: Gold Coast - Sam Petrevski-Seton - Outside Mid
8: Fremantle - Tim English - Ruck
9: Gold Coast - Tim Taranto - Inside Mid/Half Forward
10: Sydney - Griffin Logue - KPD
11: GWS - Harry Perryman - Inside Mid/Half Back
12: Gold Coast - Jarrod Berry - Utility
13: North Melbourne - Oliver Florent - Outside Mid/Half Forward
14: West Coast - Sam Powell-Pepper - Inside Mid/Half Forward
15: Adelaide - Daniel Venables - Inside Mid/Half Forward
16: Port Adelaide - Todd Marshall - KPF
17: Brisbane - Jack Scrimshaw - Half Back/Outside Mid
18: Port Adelaide - Will Hayward - Half Forward
19: Western Bulldogs - Jordan Gallucci - Outside Mid
20: Sydney - Jy Simpkin - Half Forward/Outside Mid

Seem about right?
WAG :) not absolutely set in concrete though, e.g. SPS is able to go into the contest and do well at times IMO, but he's just too good on the outside not to be wasted

At the moment he is, however IMO Venables has some serious upside (top 5-10 player in the crop upside), and could add more to our side down the track than Scrim.

Maybe. I still see Venables as a risk. I understand we need inside mids but we have two key young inside mids in the Crouch brothers.
In terms of sequencing our growth we could fill our quota of outside elite players adding to Milera and then look to another inside mid next year.

Feel like our outside mid stocks are better than our inside mid ones with Milera, Cameron, Knight, Atkins, Smith, Seedsman. The only inside mids that I'm confident about and have shown something at AFL level are Crouches and Sloane. Greenwood I reckon will be a player, but can't bank on that yet. Need to get one in this year to develop, especially one with a point of difference. I feel that, next year (together with Edwards), we draft a KPF. CCJ, for example.

Your just plain wrong on that, all of Berry, Venables, Powell Pepper, Galluci are already very well developed physically, even guys that may be available at 43 like Drew, Ronke, Clarke, Begley, Poholke Graham, Scharenberg are all well developed physically, most of the better TAC lads have played at least 2 VFL games and mostly handled it with ease as do a lot of the other state youngsters in their club systems. The days of 18 year old footballers coming through as skinny undeveloped youngsters are almost a thing of the past with the better talents being identified 3 or 4 years out from the draft and moving into the AFL and State development programs where they now do extensive weight and strengthening programs especially those invited to the AFL Academy. Of the 23 1st round picks in 2015 including Academy picks 20 played AFL football in 2015. Of the 16 2nd round picks including Academy picks 11 played AFL football in 2015.

Edit : And Griffin Logue

We don't need a pure outside mid and we don't need a pure inside mid, we need a player with a good mix of the 2. Now this is obviously difficult with a pick outside the top 10, but from what I've seen, this is the draft to do it.

That's Venables biggest problem , all he has been to now is just a highlights reel, lack of production and goes missing too often.

I probably agree with a few of the others, in that this is probably an aspect I'd be most comfortable to see us fixing in a player.

Get these types into an elite training environment and with some natural maturity, the numbers will come. Attitude would be the only thing, and judging by his contested ball work, I'd suggest this isn't a major issue, for mine it's usually the pure outside types that struggle with this, but then hey, we managed to even push Mackay up to an avg of 20 touches a game this year...;)

As mentioned earlier, an inside/outside type is what we're really in need of and when we're picking at 13, chances are there's going to be a deficit of some variety, it's about finding the one that matters least. For mine, amongst a few others, it's ball finding ability.

I would have hoped we'll see that extra outside mid come from the likes of Seedsman, Hampton, Cameron, Knight, Wigg or even Greenwood or Menzel if he gets his fitness up there. A lot of talent there, Ive got reasonable faith that 1 or 2 will take that next step.

An SA kid Graham or Scharenberg for me.
This raises the annual point of whether we draft the best available mid regardless of location or get the lesser SA kid.

Neither of those top 20 quality, and our club isn't gunshy of picking Vics.

Neither was Doedee but it didn't stop us there. I've been told once you get past the top 10 the next 20 are all fairly even. Pity we didn't do better in the Lyons deal another top 30 ish would be handy.
