Now we can look back how did the club handle the "controversial" issues of the draft and trading period?

Gibbs - should we have given up Gallucci and next years 1st rounder for a 28 year old. No way

Barlow - not too fussed with didn't get him really. We were either not interested or interested but not at his asking wage

Jarman - picked up for a rookie pick only. Great result for the club and only marginally worse for BJ than pick 90, and better than not being drafted at all
which was a distinct possibility. Could the PR have been handled better? Probably although we'll never know the full story and in the end won't
much care

Who did Carlton get with their 2nd rounder?

Wasn't that the deal we never got to? Gibbs and Carlton's 2nd for our two 1sts

That's the interesting question.

It's Gibbs and one of Lipinski/Atley/Begley/Drew for Galluci and next year's first.

That was only BF discussion though, we have know idea if that deal was actually on the table?
It wasn't on the table.

Things seemed to stall between Gibbs for a 1st rounder (our offer) and Gibbs for two 1st rounders (Carlton's offer).

No middle ground explored.

Was Reid's phone even plugged in? Lloyd Braun is our list manager.

Wasn't our final offer for Gibbs pick 13 and a third round pick (maybe the pick we got for Lyons).

Carlton were pretty stupid to reject that deal, their is a chance Poholke alone could turn out better than Gibbs.

It's very much against the odds at this stage, so really we can't say that.

Despite this, my personal feeling is that he'll be very, very good for us

There is a chance pick 90 that we had could have ended up better than Gibbs. Doesn't make Carlton wrong to reject that deal as one is a known quantity the other is a question mark.

There is much more of a chance Poholke doesn't amount to anything.

I thought it was #13 this year (Gallucci) & 2nd round 2017 was where we got to in the negotiations??

So we didn't pickup a slow big bodied, ready to go, Midfielder in Barlow ....but replaced him with a speedy medium sized midfielder ??

Gee, on reflection watching tapes .....drooling over what could've been with a Brodie type ....and just missed Venables

My understanding is that we offered a first and a 3rd in the end. This offer was virtually identical to the Brett Deledio deal. Ask every coach in the league who they'd rather have on their list for the next 4 years out of those two. Gibbs is younger, less injury prone, had an infinitely better 2015-16, and is worth significantly more, let's face it.

The fact that it appears that neither side even suggested the prospect of Pick 13 and our 2017 2nd for Gibbs, OR our 2016 and 2017 1sts for Gibbs and something else (eg Carlton's 2016 or 2017 2nd rounder) tells me two things:

a) Carlton were not happy about trading their 2nd best player and made virtually no attempt to accomodate him

AND

b) Reid is an incompetent negotiator

Before the cries of "but how do you know we didn't offer a 1st and 2nd and Carlton flat out rejected it", I've heard Ricciuto speak about this at length and it is blatant that this never happened.

We can crap on about Gallucci's quads / vertical leap and the potential in next year's draft all we like, the fact is that we completely botched the trade period and our premiership hopes in 2017-18 have taken a pretty big hit as a result. Injuries aside, Gibbs will be one of the best 50-60 players in the AFL in 2017-18. Gallucci and whoever our first or second rounders are in 2017 won't be in the best 300.

Will we be better off by 2020? Remains to be seen. We were / are currently in a premiership window though, with a glaring weakness in one area of the ground that every man and his dog knew needed to be addressed via trade, and we haven't improved in that area despite being given a pretty amazing opportunity to do so. By trading away Lyons and retaining a completely over the hill Thompson, you could quite easily argue that we've gotten even worse in our weakest area in the short term.

Yep Roo and Reid thought Carlton would fold because rebuild and draft pick.

Well they totally ****ed that up. Infuriating.

Apparently i lost the bet that English wouldn't be taken in the first round .....i argued that technically the 19th pick in the draft from 18 clubs is outside the first round of 18 picks .....however Ozzie wouldn't accept excuses, so here's a little arse

Now due to site censorship and modesty, i've had to cover up a bit

13. Third rounder and Kelly was last offer wasn't it?
Not sure where the 3rd round came in? .....as i understood Carlton wanted 2 x first rounds, and we apparently (unconfirmed) offered a first and 2nd ?

A first and 3rd was never going to float Carltons boat?

Do you know how warm this made me feel :)

GEELONG

What We Said: With a Premiership window that is nearly shut, the Cats need tall forwards.

What They Got: It was very evident that Geelong recruited for now, with an emphasis on ready to go talent. Three of their recruits came straight from their VFL side, with defender Tom Stewart, tall forward Timm House, and ruckman Ryan Abbott. All three, while most likely there for depth, should be able to play a role this year as the Cats hunt a final flag before a rebuild. Their first pick was NT ball-magnet Brandon Parfitt, who averaged 29 disposals in the SANFL Under-18s for North Adelaide, while also making four appearances for their reserves. With the Cats possessing one of the most potent midfields in the competition, chances will be few in the short-term, but he looks an interesting development prospect. The same can be said for key forward / ruck Esava Ratugolea. The athletic Murray Bushrangers star, who has Fijian roots, has had obvious Nic Nat comparisons made, but is another that has shown plenty from limited footy to suggest he could have a bright future.

Geelong's recruiting was very odd. Apparently Wells is a gun recruiter too (lol)
In gambling terms .....they're going all in for a flag, similar to Brisbane's disaster ......and most recently North Melbourne

Great call by Dangerfield .......could have delayed going home for 3 years and won a premiership ......no sign of any family yet!

Informed reports suggest we never offered a first and a second
