You could tell Lachie had signed or at least made up his mind over last couple of weeks. His form jumped a notch.

Fantastic news for the club. With this report seemingly well ahead of a club announcement, one wonders if the Giants aren't a little annoyed at the word leaking to a journo happy print. Manager maybe?
Could be our media department was clocking up a favour for later on.

Not all our re-signings come with press conferences, and Lachie isn't the Treloar type of media whore mould.

Maybe he preferred it this way?

Usually we would get a tweet or email though. Then in slower time the obligatory in house interview.

So rapped with this, absolutely love Lachie.

It's funny when you watch these guys you sort of form an opinion of them without really knowing them, but he just comes across as a ripping good bloke.

Just loves his mates and the game and runs his heart out like every game is his last.

Truly hope he plays his entire career with us, he is a core trooper and hopefully one of the inaugural flag heroes for the club.

Well said.

Footy Confidential broke the Mummy re-signing by quite a few days. Agree they're probably busy filming his "why I wanted to stay" video and we'll get the tweet and story soon. Though I will be happier when I hear it directly from the club.

Nah, he's going to finish his career at Hawthorn. They couldn't offer him much at the moment, which is why he signed for a further two, but there's an understanding between Lachie and the two clubs that we won't match his free agent offer from them after they have a few retirements and clear some cap space. He barracked for them as a kid you know.

Maybe 2017 is in him. He needs a bit more distance between himself and other less notable late career recruits (Gilham, Thornton).
With our backline injury prevalence, keep him 1 year longer.

So what do we all think... Is this Patfull's last year?
I still breathe a little easier knowing he's on the field if things get tough. He has always seems to find a way to spoil.when things are not looking good. I'd hope definitely an option next year then depends on him and the club after that. When he goes I for one will be grateful he came

I think this is one of those "assess at the end of the year" jobs. See how his body is holding up, if he has a desire to go on, if there are ready made replacements ready to go (or go if they don't get a game).

I can easily see one more year, I can also see a graceful retirement.

But then again, if he does go on, for team development, you'd think he'd be getting less game time - and does he (or you) really want him running around in the NEAFL half the time?

I always see Patfull as the ultimate club man and professional, regardless of the club. He started the year in the seconds - if he signs up for an additional year, he knows the club will hope that they can play Davis, Corr, Marchbank, etc, over him. If he returns he's not going to chuck the sads about being in the reserves - instead he'll go out and do the best job he can in the reserves and wait for an injury or help out with on-field coaching.

The other important point is that GWS is positioning itself as a club that helps players transition into coaching.

Patfull takes a year as NEAFL on-field captain-coach, and then he gets taken on as an assistant at GWS, and then - maybe - his coaching career takes off.

He's walking Chad Cornes' road, and the Chad is now coaching the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL.

Is he interested in coaching though? I vaguely remember that he came to us specifically to set up his post career career which was apparently somehow Sydney based. The swans were also an option until they were banned from trading. It was the city, not the club, he was initially interested in.

Supposedly according to the footy show we have to cut 600,000k from our cap this year?

He's made a story out of nothing. With our list reduction we will have to shed a few players and average wage is 200k.

We know McCarthy is gone and you can probably add Stewart and Tomlinson. That would cover it but obviously there will be more reshuffling at year's end.

At some point we will have issues with the cap and it will force us to lose some players we want to keep but not panicking right now.

Barrett is just being his usual mischievous self and targeting us. I cannot wait to smash him when we win our first flag, it will be a relentless punish.

My thoughts on the potential upcoming draft scenario

Pick 1: (freo) SPS
Pick 2: (GC) bowes (Essendon bid)
Pick 3: (bris) Allison (Essendon bid)
Pick 4: (ess) Brodie
Pick 5: (GWS) Marshall (pies live selection)
Pick 6: (GWS) macreadie (Richmond bid)
Pick 7: (GWS) setterfield (Richmond bid)
Pick 8: (rich) Battle

This means we don't miss out on Marshall and still have the points to pay for macreadie and setterfield who project as top 10 selections. Mutch, perryman and sproule will all be somewhere in the top 30 and I expect the club to pass on 1 or 2 of perryman (one paced) and byrne.

Marshall, sproule and macreadie would instantly replace Stewart, marchbank and Tomlinson if they do in fact leave.

I wouldn't be surprised if the club moved on ahern and McKenna as well which means mutch and setterfield take their spots on the list.

I can also see downie leaving but with Flynn being such a monster in the air and a beast at ground level I won't be too phased about it.

Would love the club to add COA (Owen-Auburn) to the rookie list

This removes 6 Victorians from our list and replaces them with 5 local players in the seniors and 1 rookie. Also helps keep us ahead of the list cutting curve.

Thoughts?
Agreed.

While i think overall we have been very lucky with our interstate players loyalty to the club.
While we have this chance of building quality from our own state we should grab it with both hands.
