THE FOUR northern clubs' access to academy talent will be again under the microscope this year after the AFL moved to reassure rivals it will closely monitor the eligibility of every prospect.

The AFL wrote to clubs on Monday alerting them to the processes regarding qualification for academy players, saying it will need to tick off many club requirements before an academy player is able to join their respective club.

In the memo, clubs were reminded they needed their academies to present annual development plans for each player by January 31.

They are also required to submit individual development plans at the start of the season for approval, as well as up-to-date match schedules for players.

At the conclusion of the season all clubs' access to talent will need to be "validated" by the AFL based on the passing of key eligibility.

There continues to be angst among some clubs about Greater Western Sydney's access to the Riverina academy region, where all four of the Giants' selections at last year's NAB AFL Draft hailed from.

Poor Pies setting GWS up for draft windfall

Another strong talent pool has emerged again for the Giants, with the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast also tipped to have some early academy picks at November's draft under the bidding system.

The AFL's head of talent Tristan Salter said the League will be asking for as many details as possible from clubs.

"At this stage…what our message has been publicly has been about making sure we have the right checks and balances around our current rules and the right protocols that sit below what's specified as a very broad role," Salter told AFL.com.au's Road to the Draft podcast.

"We're able to say at an individual player level, we want to be able to see what you're doing with kids, whether it be from the Riverina, or Albury or Deniliquin or wherever. What are you actually going to do with that kid to be able to develop him?

"If they can show they are developing that kid and they warrant access to that kid and the discount on him, then that's something we really want to support.

"If the club can't demonstrate they are going to be able in some way develop that kid...it's something we'll explore for the best option for that kid."

The League's email to clubs this week said that if a club academy was unable to fulfill the requirements or did not follow the rules, it faced a $20,000 fine and could lose access to an academy player at the draft.

It also said a number of clubs had raised concerns with the AFL in regards to academy eligibility in Queensland and New South Wales.

Salter said the development plans for players and progress of prospects would be shared with all clubs for greater information around the academy system.

"If we identify anything along the way that can strengthen the transparency and integrity around these programs, then we'll do that and we'll communicate that with all stakeholders," Salter said.

Harrison Macreadie, Will Setterfield and Max Lynch are seen as three of the standout GWS academy prospects this season, while Jack Bowes (Gold Coast) and Jacob Allison (Brisbane Lions) are attached to their respective academies.

Gee Callum loves getting on his soapbox about the Northern Academies. So far it's yielded the implementation of the points system, now he's working on getting the Riverina taken from us.

Those Melbourne VFL clubs must really be looking after him!

Everything I've heard from Lachie suggests he won't go anywhere but after Treloar...

Hope he stays, he works his arse off and is so important to the team.

I hope he stays as he is such a good player. Good thing for us is that as the wins start mounting the success factor starts playing a bigger role in negotiations. Carlton can't offer that. I suspect Treloar ends up regretting the decision he made

That's good mate, he's always maintained he loves the club and his demeanour on field suggests he's very happy.

Took a look at your list largely to see what might be available for the saints but I doubt there'll be anything.

My thoughts for what they are worth are that you'll look to move on:

McCarthy - freo trade for not as much as you'd want but thems the breaks
Barrett
Finlayson
McKenna
Stewart
I reckon Carlton are prime candidates to pick those up - gws will aim for a swap of 1sts in 2016 and a 2017 2nd. The position of blues pick this year means it's like you get a free top 2 pick as the rest of your picks should still be enough to take Sproule, Macreadie, Setterfield & Mutch.

On top of that I'm not seeing the need for mohr so I'd probably look to rookie him.

Steele and Marchbank are additional flight risks - maybe they're where the saints could come in - 2017 1st for the pair maybe but I reckon you have a good chance to convince them to sign on.

Your list changes will always be interesting I think - looking forward to seeing what happens

I'd love to know why you think Steele is a flight risk. His mum and dad are foundation members of the club, long before their boy was on the radar. The whole "was a ClubX supporter growing up" doesn't really apply here (except for maybe us) He's playing well and getting games.

Similarly why pick on Finlayson? Had an injury interrupted couple of years but is a great prospect going forward. Also a Canberra boy so no real flight risk either. And no other club was interested in him when they had a chance in the draft.

Just the combination of talent and lack of games with others coming through. Like I said though I think you'll resign steele. I doubt Finlayson will ever get a run in your side - competition too high.

Yeah he has started to pick up a few but I'm not sure it will last, you've got alternatives coming up fast and zero guys retiring in the foreseeable in his position. He's a guy who will definitely get more game time and a bigger deal elsewhere, so if a good offer came in I reckon you and he might be tempted. You'll trade him at some point I reckon as he's not a forever top 22 guy for you but I think you'll be able to resign him this year if you want to. Would have said the same of Kelly last year mind you and he looks like he'll be top 22 for a long time now.

As for keeping Finlayson if Marchbank goes I don't see why really - you'd still have more tall backs on your list than most and a hot draftee in that position who will almost certainly overtake him as soon as he walks in the door. You've got to hope that the games marchbank was getting before he went down are enough to keep him though as he's one that you can imagine being in your top 22 for most of his career if he stays.

4 of those and macreadie with Tomlinson as well before you start having to ask a medium to play tall - that's plenty.

Even if Marchbank and Tomlinson leave, you've got ready made academy replacements to step straight in this year with Sproule and Macreadie.

Im so jealous of you blokes, thats ridiculous depth. It may work out beneficial for both clubs to deal again this year. We may be able to dangle pick 1 plus some later picks in exchange for a few of those firt rounders youre holding and Tommo/ Macca. You'll still get the exact same 4 academy players, but also get a free hit at pick 1 (SPS or Ainsworth).

Gonna be intresting to see how it all pans out. Particularly where that Collingwood pick lands.

Pick 1 doesn't help us land academy players and the club is moving away from interstaters for the next 2 years while we still own the Riverina. As good as SPS is he will still sit on our list waiting for a game like Ahern, hopper, Kennedy, Pickett, Barrett etc.

Can see Gold Coast being keen for your pick but the pies pick will be very high at this stage and we don't need more currency for this year at this stage
