I have a general question about draft order. While it didn't matter because we held Geelong's first round pick, how is it determined who finished 3rd and who finished 4th?

Is it the finallist who finished higher at the end of the H&A who is deemed to finish higher after the finals?

People worried about us going from 3 firsts to 2 must remember that we still have to trade Steele, marchbank, Stewart, etc.

I think we also need to start looking at some future picks to bring in.

Also any picks after about 7-10 will purely be valued as points. Fewer firsts doesn't matter, as long as our point total remains sufficient to take the players we want.

Yep. H&A ladder determines the split between 3 & 4, 5 & 6 and 7 & 8.

Isn't that only if they go out at the same stage of the finals?

Hawthorn finsished higher than us on the ladder but went out in straight sets (ie, the week before us) then they should drop below us on the draft order despite finishing higher in the H&A

Well yeah, but that's not differentiating between 3 & 4, that's between completely separate pairs, e.g. 4 and 5. I had the finishing positions paired off so each pair was the two teams knocked out at that stage of the finals.

Ok... ;)

Ladder finishes (or draft pick order, in reverse):

1st. Premiership winner.
2nd. Grand final loser.
3rd. Prelim loser ranked highest at the end of the H&A season.
4th. Prelim loser ranked lowest at the end of the H&A season.
5th. Semi loser ranked highest at the end of the H&A season.
6th. Semi loser ranked lowest at the end of the H&A season.
7th. Elimination loser ranked highest at the end of the H&A season.
8th. Elimination loser ranked lowest at the end of the H&A season.

So do you guys think that a trade for pick 1 is off the table now? I think I saw somewhere that you would be happy with either one of Hugh or Andy, so I would assume that you guys are finished climbing the order

Most likely, I'm very happy that we will be getting one of McGrath or McCluggage.

I am very happy that we will have a chance to draft a non academy elite level talent who has sworn on his grandmothers grave he wont get homesick or sook over lack of opportunity, if that includes either of those two, great.

Yep. Two options are equally great options, so no reason to trade up further. And similarly, I'd say if Essendon bid on Setterfield then GWS would not match and have their choice of the top talent they want.
Then get setterfield for a third rounder when he comes back due to homesickness

Seems to have been a slow art to the trade period but i am sure a mad rush will happen the days before the window closes.
Can someone confirm the players out so far
McCarthy
Patfull, please correct me if I am incorrect on this but he will be on the list as a paid rookie but will not play as his contract has a pay out figure from this season?
Likely to leave
Steele
Marchbank
Pickett
Ahern
WHE
Possibles
Stewart (Contract offered so up to him if he can get more opportunity elsewhere)
Barrett
Downie
Delist
Simpson
Please take me
Palmer
Any others?
Reid(almost 27) and Lloyd (23) to have another year and possibly one or both McKenna/Mohr onto the rookie list?
44 on the list this year and with 8-10 leaving how many do people see coming in? Although it could be dependant on a points value being reached to match the bids but I would see 5 or possibly 6 players coming i through the draft
Mcgrath, Setterfield, Perryman, Mutch, Macreadie, Sproule and possibly one of the Conners or Cumming/Garthwaite depending on the points required and list spots.

That's the way I read it.

Uses up a rookie slot for a non-player, but we've never used anywhere near all our available rookie slots anyway. No great dramas that I can see.

Craig Cameron and Ameet Baines with paperwork at AFL house.

Looks like Future 2nd rounder (approx pick 28-31) for Jack Steele.
Cheap, Saints got him for unders but I'm very happy with where he landed :)

meh, we paid pick 24, we'll drop a few places for what we get back (unless they have a shocker, or they win the thing).

I'm just more pissed as who rather than what.

GIANT THOUGHTS

GWS list manager Craig Cameron is on NAB AFL Trade Radio.

Some key points:

  • Jack Steele to St Kilda was a fairly straightforward transaction.
  • Won't be trying to move to the no.1 pick.
  • No discussions with Collingwood yet over Will Hoskin-Elliott. He's still contracted and they'd be happy to keep him.
  • Three teams interested in key forward James Stewart, who is not definitely on the way out. Opportunity will be the key. Will return to a Victorian-based club if he leaves.
  • In discussions with Carlton on Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett. Blues are a bit tied up talking to Adelaide about Bryce Gibbs.
