Too early to tell, but went a pick 7. Watch the highlights to judge for yourself, but I see a long term Wells replacement.is Ahern good? putting aside his knee injuries, does he have potential to become an A grader?
i have watched the highlights, but as we know they're called 'highlights' for a reason. wondering more about his overall game. the vision was very impressive though. do you think a deal will get done?Too early to tell, but went a pick 7. Sorry to intrude, but how do you guys rate Marchbank, Pickett and Stewart? Did either 3 get many games last year? I don't know much about them.
how do you rate Ahern? does he have more or less potential than the above 3 mentioned?Marchbank - shows promise as a KPD. Played a few games but injured for most of season.
Pickett - in hindsight a waste of a pick 4. Has X-factor but was injured for this season. Apparently not performing well in rehab. A case of what might have been.
Stewart - Serviceable KPF. Dominated NEAFL but never really grasped the opportunities to make transition to AFL.
Obviously there will be more picks coming in for WHE, March and Pickett but at the moment we only have 4 picks worth academy points due to picks after 73 being worthless and not counting 3. Im all for targeting a specific need at 3 but at the same time our attention should be on this years and next years academy kids. Rather than giving away picks because we wont use them, securing 2017 picks should of been high on the agenda. Based on the points breakdown of this trade we just gave away a former first rounder who had shown plenty for nothing. We should of got a '17 pick coming back or kept 33 to get one from somebody else.
Derek Hine the list manager for collingwood is on trade Radio and he hinted that the Giants may not be after picks for WHE
That is interesting. Who do they have we could be after
Witt's maybe
Dont think we are going to agree here... i think its a good trade for usObviously there will be more picks coming in for WHE, March and Pickett but at the moment we only have 4 picks worth academy points due to picks after 73 being worthless and not counting 3. Was it bad drafting in 2014 - Marchbank (homesick) Pickett (was never AFL ready) Ahern (another mid) or just bad luck Marchbank (injuries) Pickett (injuries when coming good) Ahern (2 x knees) that this class for us was so bad?
Yes and no. Sometimes drafts are complete busts for clubs. Everyone talks about how good Stephen Wells is at Geelong and the couple of monste drafts they got to build their premiership teams around - but when you look at their draft history. It's probably more miss than hit.
1999
8: Joel Corey
15: David Spriggs
17: Ezra Bray
23: Daniel Foster
31: Paul Chapman
38: Cameron Ling

They took Spriggs, Bray and Foster before lucking out late with Chappy, Ling and Boris.
2000
44: Josh Hunt
71: Daniel Lowther
2001:
8: Jimmy Bartel
17: James Kelly
23: Charlie Gardner
24: Steve Johnson
40: Gary Ablett Jnr (F/S)
41: Henry Playfair

36: Tim Callan (F/S)
2003:

42: Matthew Spencer
Anyone in that draft at all?
2004:
33: Brent Prismall
48: Nathan Ablett (F/S)
62: Matthew Egan
Anyone here?
2005:
15: Travis Varcoe
31: Trent West
35: Stephen Owen
47: Ryan Gamble
61: Matthew Stokes
Ok, Varcoe and Stokes (lucky late), but that's two and a half years of almost complete busts.
When you have a couple of really strong drafts, and the players are all of a similar age, then it's only natural that the drafts that come after are a bit of a lottery and places in an established side are limited.
We'll look back on 2014 the way Geelong does 2003 and 2004.

As somewhat expected Patfull has called it a day

The way I read the announcement he is on a paid holiday for 12 months, not at the clubSad to see Joel retire from seniors, but he'll be of assistance to the NEAFL squad.
Need some more defenders I reckon

I think we'll be OK.
