Some one in North Melbourne's PR Department has to be the "silly fellow" of the week to announce something like this only 30 minutes after informing the players themselves...beggar's belief you can treat an ornament of the game like Brent Harvey like this, surely he has earnt the right to call his own Press Conference to announce it.

Yeah this has been handled pretty poorly by Norf.

There's a difference between what you need to do (ie bare minimum) and doing what is the best for the club. Adelaide made those decisions back then based on what they needed to do. Let's see if we have learnt why we haven't won a premiership for 18 years.
Which ageing champions have we allowed to play on for too long?

Ben Hart was certain that he had more AFL footy in him but he was wrong. Smart and Burton went one season too long but were forced to pull the plug part way through the season.

Simon Goodwin was leading the B&F when he was injured in his last season. Macca was still playing good footy when injury cut him down. Tyson Edwards had morphed into Benjamin Button until he lost a marble in the pre-season and struggled due to the impact of the operation and subsequent treatment. The main example of going one season too many back in the Craig era was Roo who should not have been selected for the Hawthorn Final (but try telling that to Roo).

IMHO it happened more frequently under Sando. We kept playing Porps, Stiffy and the Truck when they were cooked and we had KIDS who could have at least matched the output of Dogga and Radar in their last season or two.

I was concerned when we kept playing vB last year but hopefully THE MAESTRO has learnt that lesson after the 2 game experiment this year. Thommo is a line ball decision this year. He has played (and is playing) much better than some of the loonies are suggesting but will he offer more than CEY (or Wigg) in the finals? It's hard to say since CEY has only played one game against the traffic cones and Wigg is yet to debut. I am happy to go with the decision of THE MAESTRO but my gut feel is next year will be one year too long (or four year's too long according to some).

It would be nice for Thommo to finish his career collecting a premiership medal :).

I just think that it's a harsh way to announce it. 3 club greats and they get a "we're de-listing them" announcement? Surely Firrito and Petrie deserved to announce their own retirements??

And the Harvey decision is baffling considering he could go again.

LOL, Norf.

Agree to an extent - but players are making it harder and harder to manage.

Because of the money now in the game, players just will not call time, they force clubs into acting.

Will be interesting to see how we handle Thommo
You let Boomer do his own thing. He's right in the mix to win their BnF and is a legend of the game. The other 3 I get, eapecially NDS as this was a massive error on both parts.

I was talking to Hamish Ogilvie at the Rebels game in Ballarat several weeks ago and enquired about Thommo's future, he basically said quote : "he's been pretty good good again this season but I'm not sure where the club sees it......I'm pretty sure Thommo will want to go on though" : unquote, the last bit said with a broad smile...

Getting rid of Harvey is a mistake. He's still their best player. You don't get rid of your best player when you just know he can go on another year or two without too much of a drop off. He's one of those very rare players that lives the mantra - "age is just a number".

The other 3 are going to be liabilities, if they aren't already, and cutting them is the correct decision.

Would he still be their best player in 4 years when they start making finals again? I'm just not sure of the point of having a guy running around for another year or two who won't be there when the team becomes successful again.

Why are north being criticised? They 100% did the right thing for their list going forward and they 100% did the right thing going public now so their veterans could get a send off in what will likely be their last game in Melbourne for the year.

Irrelevant. We aren't talking about a guy who is still giving a bit out on the field - we're talking about their best player. Players like him belong on your list for as long as they keep performing, because they bring more to the club than just their performance.

What you're describing is a playstation list management decision.
