Irrelevant. We aren't talking about a guy who is still giving a bit out on the field - we're talking about their best player. Players like him belong on your list for as long as they keep performing, because they bring more to the club than just their performance.

What you're describing is a playstation list management decision.

So what would a player like Harvey's pay be like? List spot aside. Maybe he's asking for too much money?

Why are north being criticised? They 100% did the right thing for their list going forward and they 100% did the right thing going public now so their veterans could get a send off in what will likely be their last game in Melbourne for the year.

It's just getting rid of Harvey, not the rest.

It's one thing to make the decision to cut them - and doing so now is entirely appropriate.

Making the decision, telling the players, then holding a media conference only 30 min later, is entirely inappropriate. The players should have been given time to decide how they wanted to deal with it. They should have been given the option of saving face, by announcing their own retirements. Instead, the club robbed them of their dignity. That's what stinks.

Not entirely.. The decision to offload Boomer is one thing. The way they did it so publicly, without giving the players a chance to save face, is what really bites.
I'll assume the players were encouraged to retire and did not wish to

Do we know that they didn't ask the players if they were happy for them to announce it? Surely that came up in their discussions

If this is true .....it's not acceptable after the disappointment of knowing your career was finished

Whether and for how long you can keep these things secret is an entirely different matter ....and that maybe the reason the Presser was held so soon.

I'll repeat ....i'm sure the club encouraged the players to retire ......but 4 players retiring on the same day was never going to fly with the media ......if it quacks like a duck, it's a duck

im saying you cant leave it to the players to decide. the club obviously dont see him being a part of their next premiership team so its pointless keeping him on.

I'm sure Melbourne were thinking along the same lines when they decided to cull all their veterans, including the ones who still had some value.

how many footballers are willing to give up a $300-$500k, where else are they gonna earn that type of money?

players are selfish, club has to do whats best.
Yep, just wait until the real world hits them in the face. If they haven't planned for life after football then more fool them. They've had opportunities bestowed on them that the normal Jo Bloggs could only dream of. Huge money, easy access to financially-savvy club connections. These days any professional footballer spending any decent amount of time in an AFL team's best 22 should be set for life at the end of his career. Those that aren't can only blame themselves.

SEVERAL clubs are jostling for the services of former Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson as he considers returning to an AFL club after two years in charge of the AIS/AFL Academy.

Collingwood is considered the front-runner to secure the services of the 42-year-old, who coached the Crows to the 2012 preliminary final in his three years at the club.

Sanderson is in demand elsewhere, with Melbourne one club understood to have expressed interest in his services as an assistant coach as they prepare to make a tilt at the finals in 2017. Other Victorian clubs are also believed to have sounded him out.

Sando set to return to coaching? Could be time for the return of the Sando Spike!

Unless they think their next premiership is coming in 2017, then I simply cannot agree with this. Experienced players such as Harvey have value with regards to teaching the younger players, setting standards at training, etc.
While they might not actually play in the next premiership, they can still help build the foundation for it.

The missing potato
latest

I wouldn't be making that assumption, given that they were only told about the decision 30 minutes before the media conference.
Public perception is not always the reality though .....i highly doubt the club had its first discussion with these players 30 minutes b4 a presser .....in fact that just did not happen

Then lets see how they play this weekend? (and next)
Interesting .....do the players drop their heads with disappointment ....or realise this is their last chance for a flag ......think it will vary personality to personality

Which ageing champions have we allowed to play on for too long?

Ben Hart was certain that he had more AFL footy in him but he was wrong. Smart and Burton went one season too long but were forced to pull the plug part way through the season.

Simon Goodwin was leading the B&F when he was injured in his last season. Macca was still playing good footy when injury cut him down. Tyson Edwards had morphed into Benjamin Button until he lost a marble in the pre-season and struggled due to the impact of the operation and subsequent treatment. The main example of going one season too many back in the Craig era was Roo who should not have been selected for the Hawthorn Final (but try telling that to Roo).

IMHO it happened more frequently under Sando. We kept playing Porps, Stiffy and the Truck when they were cooked and we had KIDS who could have at least matched the output of Dogga and Radar in their last season or two.

I was concerned when we kept playing vB last year but hopefully THE MAESTRO has learnt that lesson after the 2 game experiment this year. Thommo is a line ball decision this year. He has played (and is playing) much better than some of the loonies are suggesting but will he offer more than CEY (or Wigg) in the finals? It's hard to say since CEY has only played one game against the traffic cones and Wigg is yet to debut. I am happy to go with the decision of THE MAESTRO but my gut feel is next year will be one year too long (or four year's too long according to some).

It would be nice for Thommo to finish his career collecting a premiership medal :).

Well, he's been selected as Centre in the AFL over-30 team of the year! ;) Pretty good looking team too.
