Draft Review 2016 - Revisiting the 2016 AFL Draft

Not saying they're right or wrong but the new kick in stats have massively inflated Ridleys impact on games.

He's a great interceptor and a really good kick but in the first 4 rounds alone he had the highest total kick-ins in the AFL with 41, with 33 of them being rebound 50's.
If you remove just that stat it takes his averages in that patch down from:

29 disposals, 20.75 kicks, 10.75 rebound 50's -------> 18.75 disposals, 10.5 kicks, 2.5 rebound 50's

Great player, and it's not a knock on him because that's just how the stats are counted now, but I could see arguments for Florent, Daicos, Berry and Marshall being on par with him
Fair enough they inflate his stats but as a B&F winner and AA squad member surely he’s ahead of Florent who’s a nice forward flanker.

Said it once, and I'll say it again, still my favourite draft in recent memory for us - and one that has helped us stay in contention/rebuild on the run.

No draft picks in the Top 20, but all of these Best 22 players/on the fringe of the 22 from the one draft, is just nuts:

Pick 26 - Brandan Parfitt
Pick 40 - Tom Stewart
Pick 43 - Esava Ratugolea
Pick 60 - Quinton Narkle
Rookie Pick 16 - Jack Henry
Cat B Rookie - Mark O'Connor

For reference, 5 of those 6 played in our win against the Tiges, and O'Connor is entrenched in our Best 22 when he comes back from injury/is already in the leadership group.

Insane hit rate from just one solitary draft with mostly late picks. Wells is a god.

Yep, that draft has pretty much saved Geelong from falling off a cliff. Stewart is one of the best 40+ picks you'll ever see.

Ridley made the AA squad last year. He takes the kick outs as he is so good with his disposals and decision making. Inflated stats but he still has a big influence on games.

He also has a B&F.

Here's a list of 48 names I reckon could easily fill a separate club list.

Ben Ainsworth
Josh Battle
Jarrod Berry
Shai Bolton
Jack Bowes
Callum Brown
Darcy Cameron
Brennan Cox
Josh Daicos
Sean Darcy
Sam Draper
Taylin Duman
Tim English
Zac Fisher
Oliver Florent
Jack Graham
Oliver Hanrahan
Will Hayward
Jack Henry
Peter Ladhams
Nick Larkey
Mitchell Lewis
Patrick Lipinski
Griffin Logue
Rowan Marshall
Todd Marshall
Hugh McCluggage
Andrew McGrath
Oscar McInerney
Harry Morrison
Quinton Narkle
Brandan Parfitt
Harry Perryman
Sam Petrevski-Seton
Sam Powell-Pepper
Esava Ratugolea
Jordan Ridley
Willie Rioli
Josh Rotham
Luke Ryan
Jack Scrimshaw
Will Setterfield
Jy Simpkin
Tom Stewart
Tim Taranto
Jake Waterman
Alex Witherden
Cameron Zurhaar.

Closest I'd come to a swap would be Narkle and Cameron out and Cumming and Robbie Fox in.

B&F winner is a hard one to factor in because clubs often see things with players differently to supporters with their own internal metrics of how players performed but of the 7 players mentioned I'd personally be taking them

1. English
2. Marshall
3. Ridley
4. Berry
5. McGrath
6. Florent
7. Daicos

Fair enough, that’s just like your opinion man

Gold Coast stuffed up with this draft big time in hindsight. They selected Ainsworth, Scrimshaw and Brodie all with top 10 picks and all 3 have been underwhelming thusfar.

Logue, Setterfield and SPP were also selected in the top 10 and haven't come on yet. That's a lot of misses in the top 10

Logues developing nicely, injuries had halted progress but he is gonna be a player

Gotta be one of the worst first rounds as a whole in recent memory. There's some gems later on though

The tiger posters finally got to you!!

Stewart is on his way to his 3rd AA - that will take a lot of catching from the chasing pack.

3 x AA's include decent players like Simon Black and Matty Richardson.

But McCluggae will add his 1st AA in 2021 unless injuries happen. Simpkin and McGrath are weighed down by being in poor teams. Hard for the kids to do the heavy lifting - just ask Cripps!!

They may have got to me! I’d also argue that Clug was really unlucky not to already have an AA jumper. If they select pure wings, he is AA in 2019 and 2020. I think McGrath more of an athlete than a natural footballer. Simpkin really needs to clean up his disposal to go to the next level imo

Simpkin was outstanding today.

38 disposals, 23 contested, 13 clearances and 9 tackles.
Averaging nearly 26 disposals a game this year. Finally taking that extra step.

Clug is getting toward very top levels kids is a monster
Just before the season started last year Fagan (I think it was) mentioned that Clugga was challenging Neale as the number one midfielder at the club. Neale went on to win the Brownlow of course and had a super year so it was probably a bit premature. But it wouldn't suprise me if the feeling during that preseason and most likely this year's is that Clugga is close. He is a pretty special player in the way he gathers the football, glides over the turf, spins out of trouble and hits those inside 50's. If only he could nail his chances in front of goal he could well kick 30 in a season without playing forward.

Our four 2016 draft picks were four of our best last night.
Logue - was actually really good despite Buddy kicking a bag. So much upside and potential if he can stay fit.
Darcy - has there been a better first 50 games from a pure ruckman of this age in recent league history? Naitanui is the only one I can think of. He is still only 22!!! Most ruckman aged 22 are still hanging around the twos looking for a debut at his age.
Brennan Cox - settling nicely into a very good second tall defender. Brilliant ball user with lots of room to grow further.
Luke Ryan - I’ve run out of superlatives. The heart and soul of the freo football club. A leader, already a club champion, and a brilliant player. No coincidence we lost 3 in a row the last 3 weeks he was missing. How on earth did he slip to pick 66? Maybe he didn’t attend the right private school or something? Whatever it is we are so lucky to have him.
