Don't have many atm. Getting Smith and Hill in the team ='d flags
We need some seriously hard insider mids to help Mitchell, and yes, maybe a Hill type player. I mean this pissy, half back types who are too short to play key defence but too big to play the Guerra type role.

Following is a 2017 draft pick and list management strategy as I don't think you can do one without the other.'

Burgoyne must be be given a 2018 contract and I hope Hodgey wants to go around for 1 more year.

3 Draft Picks
Gibson (to retire?).............. pick ~36 Changkuoth Jiath........................................Midfield
Miles*............................... Pick ~45 Best available talent
Traded, Retired player.......... upgrade James Cousins

List Management.................Big Fish............../ List Balance Improvement.................Need
Shoenmakers***............... Jake Lever.......... / Aliir Aliir..........................................Marking CHB
Willsmore*........................ Lachie Whitfield.../ Jay Kennedy Harris** or Harley Balic..Quick Wing, mid
Duryea***........................ Jacob Hopper......./ Jack Trengove..................................Midfield, utility

I'd be happy with any combination of the above. If no big fish are landed then we go into the 2018 draft uncompromised.

Rookies: Academy and Father-sons
Fitzpatrick* (to retire?)....... Tony Olango.........................................Project Leaping Ruckman
Upgrade Cousins................ Tyrone Hayes........................................Project Speedy Wingman
Surman (retired)................ James Langford or Devlin Brereton..........Project inside Mid

* I'm sure these player can fill a need at other clubs. Hopefully they can be traded
**EDITS:Jay Kennedy Harris resigned with Melbourne
*** Shoey has been a great contributor as a forward these last few weeks
*** Duryea has be very effective as a negating forward who also kicks a couple of goals

I know he won't be eligible till next year, but but gee I'd love to have a crack at Ian Hill. Looks like he's got everything Brad had plus some.

Our defence is sorted in the short and long term apart from a question mark whether Brand will make it.
Forward line also sorted.
Rucks sorted.
Just need to draft mids - a couple with explosive speed plus one KPD. Cannot plan for a FA, as we are just as likely to lose one as gain one (over time anyway).

Just on tax cup commentary they wondered if Hawks will go harder in 2018 draft as its expected to be like 2001

Hmmm

If that's true and you don't take a decent fill. The other teams will pull ahead of you

Glad you posted this - have been thinking about it, but have not dared to say it...

If we are happy to drink the Kool Aid about GW being a recruiting genius, then can we believe that Hawks are happy to sacrifice 2017 Draft, and then "feast" on a once in a decade harvest that will be the 2018 Draft?!?!

I think I read somewhere that 2017 Draft would be weaker than that prior and following (but maybe I just read it on BF).

Is this all too much of a stretch??!

Somehow I doubt that CJ is worth anything close to pick 36 based on what has been reported to date. You are probably on the mark with the 'midfield' bit, but putting CJ's name against it is, at the moment, just silly.

Fair comment on CJ. I'll happily admit that I don't know if any of the players mentioned as draft prospects are up to it, though I hope they all are. I added them as the Hawks have some level of interest in each player, and they fit nicely into a draft concept: which is to rebalance the team by reducing the number of half backs and increasing the number of midfielders.

I think it's a stretch given how many top 10 draft picks from any year still bomb out to not become established players.

To think that the recruiters can pick it years in advance when it's not even an exact science for current year seems to be standard journo fuel to get fans excited or frustrated.

Yep - fair enough LP. :thumbsu:

Draft is a punt anyway but at pick 36 I don't think CJ would be too outrageous based on what I saw in the game against WA . We have drafted some real spuds earlier in past years ( harry miller , Mitch Thorpe almost took Tambling at 3or 4 or something ridiculous ) the African boy has a lot of upside from what I can see .

Hey Hawkers, thought you might be interested in this video that I have created of one of your Academy prospects:

One of the most intriguing prospective recruits for Hawthorn is Changkuoth Jiath, who is of African descent and is eligible to be taken by the Hawks as a multicultural academy player. Jiath, an athletic 185cm midfielder for the Gippsland Power, performed well in the Under 17s All-Stars match last September.

Looks really athletic, but skills let him down a bit. Skills can generally be worked at though and he looks like he has plenty to work with so I'm excited by his prospects.

Just watched a bit of the last quarter of the Vic Country V SA game(so a huge sample size) Had a nice involvement. He worked the wings, trying to provide an outlet, and when he got it, VC ended up with a shot on goal. He's pretty much Brad hill as far as I can see

He looks damn good.

Until he kicks the ball. That being said he has a lot to work with. Very athletic and if we can polish his skills we might have a player.

Does anyone know how long GW is contracted for at Hawthorn?

Rumors are always swirling about other clubs wanting to poach him, and again on radio yesterday, Please let us keep some of our staff!!!

Yep heard this too, we cannot lose Wright and his team. They are the best by far. Story is Evans is trying to get Wright and his assistant (McKenzie?? Maybe) to the Suns.
It was interesting to hear some other recruiters and experts (shifter, Stephen wells) on radio talk about how this may be the weakest draft in decades.
Perhaps trading out our first rounder wasn't a rash call after all[emoji848]
They have always delivered

I don't get this whole notion of a pre-determined weak or strong draft, surely you can't judge a draft until a few years after the actual draft when players can further develop their game.

If that's the case then just watch draft stars and sack the whole team.
I've had the pleasure of a presentation of how the Hawks drafting and recruitment strategies are formulated. It's a 5 year plan, adjusted as required but it's a piece of poetry in its intricacies.
Those in the know have a great idea about future drafts, years in advance. They formulate trade v draft strategies based on that knowledge. Cyril was identified waaay out for example.

Yes there are exceptions to every rule but don't think for one second we reacted from an emotional, irrational or unplanned (sold the farm) position last year. We as supporters might not get it but the club does.

Wright is the best. To lose him would be a disaster.
