On Callum Twomey's road to the draft podcast today he was asked the question "would you trade the number 1 pick for Jacob Hopper and Matthew Kennedy" he said yes and would also trade it for Hopper alone. He then added but Hooper and/or Kennedy will not be going to the Lions.
Really. I thought he hedged his bet on that question. More a maybe.

Unfortunately, as nice as it would be trade out our top draft picks for developed A grade talent already in the system, I think chances are we will have no other option but head to the draft year-in, year-out....at least until we are winning games and presenting a more attractive location to ply one's footy trade

That sucks, both would be good additions to our team.

Unsurprisingly, only the dregs that are wanting to prolong their AFL careers are willing to come to the club. Anyone decent doesn't want a bar of the club.

Not sure that's the case, we have picked up Beams and Christensen - both A graders. There are other clubs that don't get to cherry pick players.

That was pre Leppitsch

But there are clubs that regularly do.....and we are NEVER one of them.

As for Freo, granted they have historically had problems attracting big name players from outside WA

However, the fact that they exist in a "football State" means they don't have the constant battle retaining "homesick" deserters, since a decent slice of their list is always going to be from WA.

Just had a listen to the end of it again to see if I was hearing things, the fella that was on with him said it would be hard to knock back the opportunity of a number 1 pick but Twomey said-

"I think if you could have both Matthew Kennedy and Jacob Hopper you'd probably definitely do it, I think if you got Jacob Hopper you'd probably do it, just Matthew Kennedy you'd think hard about it".

probably definitely?

I think Twomey would do it but as he added there not coming here so the speculation/hope is moot.

Beams an A grader, but his was a homecoming. There aren't that many of them.

Christensen I don't view as an A grader. Solid B. Off the top of my head, Beams we paid pick 5, 25 and Crisp. Christensen we paid around pick 17. He's hardly a Treloar/O'meara/Beams megatrade.

On a totally seperate Twomey topic.

He really is against the Lions receiving a priority pick isn't he.

Personally, if all our kids stay, I'm not going to banging on for a PP. If Schache leaves, and we don't receive a top 5 pick back in trade, I'll be front and centre arguing for one.

My preference would be for the AFL to forgive some of our debt, and/or put a fair amount of money in to our new training base, with a genuine boutique stadium.

I'm not over keen on the Springfield option, but it's very much a case of beggars can't be choosers.

Interesting point mentioned on the trade and free agency board.
Sorry to put the cat among the pigeons.

Greater Western Sydney's 1000-point penalty for the Lachie Whitfield affair last year means their current pick 18 (worth 985 points) is worthless and shifted to the end of the draft.

In effect Brisbane now holds pick 18 and all clubs move up one spot.

Don't know how you can work that scenario into your spreadsheet.

And as the ladder stands we have picks 1, 14 and 19 but after that only picks 44 and 72 (barring any compensation picks). So we probably need to add a pick or two you would think.

Hope we draft Berrys little bro next year, didn't seem to have a great last several games but had a really good game as an underager this week Hopefully he has the same leadership qualities and hardness at the ball as Jarrod

Also Cox has a little bro as well iirc, Wonder if he is as good as Cedric

A little hard to see where it is coming from now that it is looking like both Schache and Rocky might possibly stay.
Other than a trade using pick 1 to get 2 very early picks.

Mature aged prospect Tim Kelly who is turning 23 in July has started to gain a bit of attention in the media after a 35 disposal 7 goal performance over the weekend playing for South Fremantle in the WAFL. In his 10 games this season he has averaged 29 disposals and kicked 14 goals. I think we should seriously be looking at ready to go, mature agers from the state leagues who can come in and have a positive impact from day 1. It'd be handy finding another star mature ager type to add to our list like we did back in 2012 with Zorko.

His stats for those interested: http://www.wafl.com.au/players/view/4203

This article has some highlights of his 7 goal performance. He has sublime kicking skills. https://thewest.com.au/sport/ball-m...fremantle-star-tim-kellys-poise-ng-b88500514z
