You been to Knightmares PD board lately briz? I asked the question of him re Tom Berry and he rates him as a better prospect than Jarrod Berry.

Yup, I followed the discussion. I do know Knighmare's view of Tom Berry is a little higher from some of the other draft watchers. I like reading Knightmare, but I don't agree with everything he writes.

I try to read as many of the different watchers/commentators as possible and form an opinion taking in all the various views. I probably place more weight on Bishop's and Matt Balmer's comments that any of the other draft watchers.

I'm (trying to) waiting until the end of the trade period to see what picks we're taking to the draft before I really start looking at names at various picks.

I do expect Ballenden to be bid on somewhere just before or just after Port's pick.

Came across a short draft podcast on twitter last night, and one comment made, was that Nick Coffield could do a Tim Taranto and climb up to the very top of the draft.

I love what I have read re what Nick Coffield could bring to our side eg. elite kick, some say best in the draft, composure, good decision maker. Looks really good from the little bits of vision I have seen as well.

I don't know whether you have seen this thread on the phantom drafts board, it compares the actual order to who the BF phantom drafters mock drafted, Bishop did very well, gee dub looked the best, gd hasn't got one up for this year yet.

I saw a small list of 10/15 players that are looking extremely good and to further add to this is that Vic Metro (bar the King twins) didn't play any underagers and they usually have the majority of first round players. There's about 8 players from SA, WA and the Allies that should be first rounders and that's not even taking into account Sam Walsh and Oscar Brownless from Vic C. All in all (and without seeing him) Tom Berry could be around our second round pick.

Just to add I could see a pretty big meltdown on here if we passed on Rankine (cause we know more than the recruiters right?;))

C'mon, we the uneducated and non professional fans did pretty good last year identifying talent we'd like to see at the club.

A lot of people here were right in to McClugagge and Berry once the trade period and draft combine were done. Quite a few posters talked up Cedric Cox from early on in the TAC Cup season. I was driving the Witherden bandwagon from the beginning of the season, and pushed the line he could slide to our second round pick once he was injured. We drafted 4 out 8 of most popular kids mentioned throughout the season (the others being Ainsworth, Sam Petrevski-Seaton, Jy Sympkin and Sam Powell-Pepper).

GWS recruiting manager [on Road to the Draft yesterday] quoted as saying he thinks the depth of this years draft is better than last years. "If I look at the guys who are probably going to get picked this year in the top-30, I like a lot more of them than what I did last year. This year the first three-to-five picks might not be at the level of what we rated Andy (McGrath) and Tim at last year, but I think the overall depth in terms of the first couple of rounds is better." Thoughts?

POSSIBLE FIRST-ROUND TARGETS

Brisbane Lions (Picks 1 and 14)

The Lions will likely go for the best available player, but as has been seen in previous years, they tend to lean towards recruiting country-based players for retention purposes. So while Dustin Martin clone Cameron Rayner is arguably the Pick 1 favourite at the moment, whether the Lions actually select him remains uncertain. Still, he thoroughly deserves the mantle should it come to fruition. Darcy Fogarty (Lucindale, SA) is a country boy with ample star potential, but a subpar, injury-hampered past month — which has seen him undergo season-ending knee surgery — may see him slip. As for the later pick, the Lions crave midfield depth — and country boy Paddy Dow would be an ideal fit if he lasts that long. Also keep in mind they’ll be invited to match a bid on Academy prospect Connor Ballenden likely during the first round — an option they’re likely to take up on draft night.

But we have their pick?
That's what I was alluding to, ie. I can see Richmond bidding on Ballenden. If the Tigers finish below Port that would mean we would have to use that Port pick to match which would mean we wouldn't get in another open draft player.:(

I don't think we will have pick one come end of year, think will have pick three....

I think we'll end up with pick 2, level on points with the Kangaroos but with a lower percentage, looking at the draw I can't see the Blues winning another game.

Ah ok you said port below tiges,

Agree on blues, but we will beat suns and then north in the last round. Both games at home. That would put us one win clear of North. Blues pick 1 North pick 2 and is pick 3.

Could be, I have North beating Collingwood this weekend on the ladder predictor. Any of picks 1-3 means we would be getting a really good prospect anyway.

Yep, Port below the Tigers means we get to use that pick on an open draft player.

If Tigers are below Port and the Tigers bid on Ballenden we have to match with the Port pick.

NB-:) I'm not sure if I'm confused, you are, or we both are:oops:.

I hope Port finish below the Tigers, I can see them bidding on Ballenden.
Hopefully they have to match a bid on Patrick Naish before their first pick.
So it will be their 2nd pick which is linked to Geelong's first. Which could be as high as pick 17. It would be great if a bid doesn't come before then.

I struggle to see a team bidding on Naish in the first round. I expect quite a few midfielders to jump above Naish (and Jack Petruccelle) who have more developed games, but haven't received the hype because they don't have the speed and leap that Naish and Petruccelle posses.

Well i hope you are wrong, although I am with jason pm and hope that Port finish below Richmond on the ladder because i have been saying for a while that i think it will be Richmond that bid on Ballenden.
We really need to have a minimum of 2 picks before the bid comes. The earlier the picks the better.

I hope Port bomb out of the finals at the earliest opportunity and finish below Richmond on the ladder as well. I don't know anyone who wants us having to match a bid on Ballenden before the Port pick.

I'm still not very high on this year draft crop. I believe all but 1 or 2 of this years top 10 talent would have been behind the top 6 in last years draft, and most behind the top 12 picked last year.

Outside of this years top 10, there's not much separating the kid at 12 from the kid at 25. Kids such as Naish and Petruccelle poses elite or near elite physical attributes but aren't as skilled as kids ranked behind them such as Lachlan Fogarty or Andrew Brayshaw, who might be viewed as undersized for todays inside mids.

I didn't think to ask before, where did you see this list?

I think Adam Cerra is a player our recruiters will really like. Clean, composed, wins his own footy, uses it well and has shown he can kick goals. It will be interesting to see who firms as the likely selection for us come the end of the year. I wouldn't be surprised to see us finish above Carlton and North.

Someone should keep a timeline of when they start talking down the current years draft, talk up next year and then swing back to this year's. I don't remember it happening in 2008/9/10 but there wasn't as much focus on the draft back then.
