VIC CLUBS SET TO MISS OUT ON GIANTS GUNS

Emerging GWS star Josh Kelly will rebuff offers from Victorian clubs including North Melbourne to remain at GWS, reports JON RALPH.

But exciting half forward Devon Smith has parked contract talks in the short term after an injury-riddled 2016 season.New leadership group member Kelly continues to be linked to Melbourne clubs and is best mates with Dogs star Marcus Bontempelli. They travelled together overseas in the off-season, with Kelly’s expected two-year deal taking longer than the Giants would have liked to sign. Melbourne clubs with significant salary cap room had hoped he might be lured home after playing TAC Cup at the Sandringham Dragons. But the 22-year-old No.2 selection from the 2013 national draft has rebuffed rivals and is negotiating exclusively with the Giants. Smith has Victorian suitors including Geelong, with the former Geelong Grammar pupil buying an investment property in the town over the summer. His ability to hit the scoreboard as well as put on elite defensive pressure means he will have no shortage of Victorian suitors. But his manager Ned Guy said on Wednesday any delay in his talks were purely down to him wanting to re-establish himself in the team after a PCL injury. Smith missed eight games mid-season with knee issues last year and with solid form under his belt this year is keen to stay. Smith will likely return to Geelong when his career is over but Guy said he would negotiate only with the Giants."We are just going to let him get some footy under his belt. We opened discussions and were not quite at a point where the parties were happy to sign off on the numbers," Guy said. "They are happy to let him play some footy for no other reason that he missed some footy last year. We are not a million miles apart. After a good pre-season he is confident he can play the footy he knows he can."GWS coach Leon Cameron said today he was hopeful of an announcement next month for Kelly.

****, Ralph...

...Kelly's gone. :'(

On a different note, Devon is one player where I think parking his contract actually makes sense from both parties. Look, he may nick off but he's coming off a pretty lacklustre 18 months or so due to injury so getting back into the form that saw him one of our big five could get him a much bigger pay day from the club.

Looking like it might get a tad tough to keep Kelly

North Melbourne have made a Buddy Franklin, Tom Boyd-type nine-year $9 million contract offer for Greater Western Sydney midfielder Josh Kelly, according to former AFL club executive Brian Waldron. Fairfax Media has confirmed that there is a nine-year contract on the table for Kelly.

GWS are understood to be aware a long-term offer has been floated for Kelly, but not the specific terms or if a firm offer had actually been made.

still think Grand Final wins with a bunch of his best mates will exceed this supposed offer. In saying that, obviously he's a gun and would like to have him

Thats an amazing offer. If true he has to take it. I find it ridiculous if its true- they could get a bonafide superstar for that money! Kelly is great but at 60 odd games can't be considered a superstar just yet.

In the week leading up to playing them this makes it out to the press. **** off Norf thats pathetic.
More likely his agent driving up his price if Kelly chooses to stay at gws. It is a tactic often used by Pickering. Our club has nothing to majorly gain from revealing that type of information, so why would we bother doing it now, when October is a long way off.

Your club is 0-2 and wants a win, its puts media pressure on a 22yo who is a key player for us. Agreed if the offer is legit there is nothing to be gained, cant recall any other deals in this ballpark ever being leaked.

The franklin deal was known about for months, he just had to choose which Sydney club. The rumoured figures and years were pretty close to spot on. It is what player agents do because they are trying to drive up their client's price. This happened to us with wells and greenwood.

As for your first sentence, early season form has jack all to deal with contracts. The media pressure was already there late last week. Player agents are negotiating with both sides, so he would have access to that type of information and then leak to their media contacts. Sadly, that is how it works. North have been burnt by player agents doing leaks a few times.

Josh is a fine young player but he is not Marcus Bontempelli and that type of ridiculous desperate offer should be reserved for that kind of player.

He would be insane not to take it.
We would have to pay overs for a player of Kelly's class, but nine years is excessive.

About Devon Smith, as a Geelong supporter and the link I saw to him maybe joing a few things I might ask
Don't know much about him, what is he like as a player?
What's his best position?
What does he bring to the Giants in terms of pace, etc?

Tends to play like a traditional running half forward flanker, outside mid. Expected him to maybe play wing with Lachie Whitfield out but that hasn't happened as far as I've seen.
Was outstanding in precious years but form dropped off late 2015 and early 2016. He then had time out for "clean up" surgery on his knees and I thiugh came back well late 2016. Seems to be view his form still isn't great, I get the feeling he has better form in him than we've seen so far.

His disposal by foot is lethal, him and Wilson the best kicks in our team. Again a lot of our supporters seem to feel he should be passing off runnimg into the 50, my view is if you can kick like he can then shoot.

Very angry young man, I've watched him a lot from above the interchange bench and he always comes off angry when we're losing, but he controls himself on the field, and I'm not sure that hating to lose is a bad thing.

Jake Niall going with it as well

If what has been reported is on the money then its near impossible seeing Josh knocking it back and with it being 9x9 that should be 2 first rd picks back our way and I guess we might end up with Spargo after all.
I have heard 8mil over 9 years. I believe there is an offer. Don't know Josh Kelly position other than talks have cooled

Well, like everyone else, I am gobsmacked by that amount & length of contract. In all truth, I couldn't begrudge Josh taking it to go home - those $ will set him up for life. Not that I think it's that smart from Norths, as it potentially puts him in a playing 'comfort zone' and the club accepts a lot of risk of injury/form loss/etc. Plus I believe that those $ should be reserved for someone like Bont or Dusty who has actually delivered a bit more on the track. (I presume that they are looking at the salary cap increasing over the 9 years such that &1m or so in 7-9 years isn't that remarkable.) I love what Josh brings to the GWS midfield & his potential to develop further, and that's what Norths are paying big $ for - they hope (like Bulldogs with Tom Boyd) that it works out.

I guess we just need to strap in for the ride. Truth be told, whatever plays out publically, I just hope he's up front with GWS so that they can make other player retention decisions. If he goes, for me it's a must that we retain Shiel & Hopper; plus Taranto & Setterfield become more important in the future. Need to budget $ to manage those guys.
