Martin is a lock to North. Unsure if that is a good thing when it comes to keeping Kelly (although I'm still backing my guy in that we have him for 2 more years) or a bad thing.

Any particular reason why? Or just an opinion?

An absolute tragedy what has happened to big Downs. I hope he gets things right.
Without sound like an absolute jerk though...how much would have he been on next year? $200K? $250K? Surely that money can just be given straight to Kelly now?

And his (wife? partner?) mother of his children, works part time in the front office.

And if he gets a $200K pay increase from another club then he'd be mad not to take it. Thinking of the mother of his children, and her, and all that stuff. Everyone has their price. Just ask jack steele and good on him for making a go of it.

My thoughts also with Big Tom. As someone who has battled mental illness recently and am currently sitting at a year off work due to it, it's tough.

Was also one of the hardest decisions of my life to quit work and admit I needed to look after myself more.

Best of luck to him in the future.

Are you sure we didn't pay out his 2018 contract? Not sure what that means for the cap and which year if we did.

If it counts as an injury, and it probably should, he gets paid out. It can come off this year's cap or injury cap if there's room. Regardless of what he's on, we need to pay someone to take his spot on the list at about $100k or thereabouts so it can't all go to Kelly anyway.

Tks for clarifying. Wording was leaving at tje end of 2017 and wasn't sure. Seems appropriate he gets paid

Any word on if H Himmelberg is going to re-sign at this point?
There is some talk that Adelaide are still ultra keen on him.
Can see why you'd be keen. Right now we need him badly and doubtless he's on our retain if possible list. Who knows what will happen at this point.

I take that as we are paying him until the end of this year only.
I read that, and also read dlanod's input that I always take seriously. I dont see the quote as definitive evidence that he wasn't paid, just he will leave our bòoks.
I'm not saying you're.wrong and it's a valid way to interpret the statement. I asked because I would love to know for sure. Guess some things are private though.

Yeah, and it is a bit of a "blow-fly" action by me to even bring it up considering the circumstances of his departure.

I dont think so. We all wish him well and I think he made a real contribution in the back end of 2015. The club and him move on though and anything that might help keep Kelly is good.

It means he'll be delisted but it doesn't necessarily line up with pay. If it was a normal football injury he'd be entitled to be paid out the remainder of his contract regardless of the number of years and when he left the list, but mental illness is a grey area AFAIK (no insider knowledge on how it's handled).

Patfull is an example of a player who retired but was owed a payout that we couldn't fit into the cap of the year he retired. Someone like Nick Stevens OTOH retired early, got a full payout, and because Carlton could fit it into their cap* they didn't have to retain him on their list.

* part of his payment was counted under the injury payment cap.

I get all that, but if Tom has just said, look, I'm not right. I can't do this. Pay me out until the end of this year and we can forget next year's wage would that be allowed under the AFL rules?

Any payouts are always subject to negotiations between the club and the player. There's no real evidence that this went one way or another at the moment though.

Haven't looked a whole lot into this Kelly situation, but is it you guys only offering two years or him only willing to consider two years?

Even with your cap the way it is atm I'd have thought he was one guy you'd happily offer a longer term contract to.

Kelly's a bloody jet btw, if you didn't know already

I think it's a case of 'Sign for two years on decent money, and then decide if you really want to hit free agency hard'.

GWS also seems to want to keep a band of players all earning about the same - it's not worth losing, say, Shiel and Coniglio to keep Kelly.
