SOS not mucking about.
It is times like this I want to re-visit the video that I think is somewhere on one of early episodes of The Journey of SOS talking to the player group about list management going forward. I bet many of them sitting there at the time, did not realise he was going to end well over half their careers at Carlton in such a short space of time. I bet he knew it was coming though. He knew the list was in horrendous state and need serious action. Just cannot do it all on one off season.

agreed. alright with the other 2 though and even with Blaine I think we saw his best, im sure whoever they bring in will be good replacements.
Same.
I thought Boek had done enough to earn 12 more months.

Come again?
Not everyone has to be able to go into the midfield.
Looks like a potentially really good shut down small def
What You See Is What You Get

I don't want any. Let's head to the draft
We traded our 5th and 6th round picks, so I guess you're hoping for three picks in the 80s?

No disrepect but why would we pick up more defenders when we have a plethora of them?
We lack small defensive depth, and have since we traded Tuohy. Buckley and Smedts were tried down there with no success.

Jackson Ramsey has talent. If they are set on moving Docherty into the midfield could do worse than have Ramsey as a back up.
Ramsay's been pretty poor returning from his ACL tear; Pies would have kept him if they thought he had it in him.

That was the talk. If he proves himself and works hard he will be given a chance as a rookie. I like that. Up to him now. Has ability
Maybe, though it's extremely unlikely that we burn a round 1 rookie pick on him.

Wow. I'm very surprised we cut three. Fully support keeping Graham on the list over the three we cut today - he is the only decent midfielder amongst them and we lack depth in that area, as well as being good for the NBs.

The thing that strikes me is we must obviously have at least one DFA we rate. Possibly even two if we aren't interested in using a pick in the 70s this draft.

It's a bold list management decision, Cotton... Let's see if it pays off...
That'd leave us using our 7th and 8th round picks. That'd be surprising.

Not sure of the fascination to turn the games best HBF into a midfielder whilst replacing him down back with Aaron Mullet

Simpson goes out. Docherty as the loose 7th man and Mullett slips in as small running defender we lack.

Probably more wing / 7th defender than going into the centre square.

Also Simpson played arguably his best footy on the wing, especially the first few weeks of 2012. A move back there could be on the cards
Simpson was pretty much playing on the wing in a more attacking role this year, given they were rotating ASOS, Rowe, Jones, Byrne, Williamson, Weitering and Marchbank through defence along with Docherty and Williamson.

Mullett just gives us depth in the smaller ranks of those names, as well as an opportunity to bolster our attacking options coming out of defence to give the opposition something to think about. You can't give much latitude to Williamson, Mullett, Docherty or Byrne when it comes to their disposal and run.

As an aside, I'm hoping we're targeting Alex Morgan as well. Has had hamstring issues but appears to be over them. Oxley is another if he's healthy and we're looking for a direct replacement for White. Then there's Hartung.

I'd be surprised if we didn't grab at least 2 DFAs given how deep we've cut into the list, our current ND picks and the surprising quality of the DFA pool.

Certainly if those names are happy with 1-year deals, they are upgrades on most of the names we discarded.

Completely agree.

We do need a "lock down" small defender - who can also run and kick the ball well.

This not not Doc's job - hope Mullett can perform this role.

We seriously need someone to play the "Neville Jetta role" - I reckon he was the best in the league last year.

Good !!

Keep clearing the deadwood, the list can only improve by doing so.

I reckon that takes it 13 changes overall does it not ??

How many posters said we won't get rid of that many again and lambasted me for suggesting such a thing ??

Yeah, let's see who fess's up on that one .......

I said 10

13 is mega savage

I like

im sure this was discussed somewhere but any love for Crameri?
Perhaps a good backup strong forward who is an experienced player
has played 99 games for 166 goals compared to Levis 94 games for 105 goals. Think he might be worth a punt, could provide some much needed experience down there as well

and I got criticised for saying we will do 20 in 2 years. Think I was being conservative :straining:

I don't know who got criticised for what, but no-one would have expected us to clear two contracted players.
That's highly unusual and hard to have factored it in.

I certainly didn't and I had a cull of 8 - 10.

Mullett is the best DFA available and provides depth at the very least. Could be a fantastic acquisition, he is quick and a great kick. I believe our coaching staff will improve him further and be a solid lock down defender.

I would prefer this option than giving up a 2nd round pick for Saad when arguably there isn't much between them. Mullett actually gets more of the ball, more metres gained and rebound 50's plus numerous other stats.

Nope although I'm not sure Graham will make it. At least he works both ways and will put his head over the ball and play to team instructions. When we have a list desperate for outside run and speed and still delist Boekhurst that says it all.
Lang, Williamson, Fisher, Charlie and SPS among others for outside run and speed. All not afraid to do the tough stuff too.

I reckon Williamson has it in him to play midfield.

Docherty should stay down back.
Williamson is not ready yet, Docs is and will most likely go into the middle and do very well
I'm coming for you in an aggressive font - possibly bolded. You have been warned.
scary stuff, not everyone has your opinion

Scary stuff!! It's a forum and not everyone has the same opinion as each other, so toughen up

We have a minimum of 8 spots available now, though.

There's clearly a DFA or two incoming. Smedts? Wonder what happened here? Interesting.

Maybe we re-rookie White for the character. Sumner now has a shot also as we may be heading towards a 38/6 split.

It may be simplistic, but maybe they just agreed that he wasn't able to contribute so they delisted him. It may receive scorn from the rabble, but it is more sensible to bring in someone who may have only a slight glimmer of hope, than to keep someone who doesn't.

It leaves plenty of argument over why we've kept players too long in the past, or why some players got a 3 year deal instead of 1. But I'm happy it's being done correctly now and hope they continue. I was shocked about White, who always seemed to dodge the bullet, and just expected both Smedts and Boeky to get another 1yr deal, because that's the way it used to be done.

I'm really not sure if player a (Carlton) < player b (Hawks) or player b = player c ,etc, but if we can replace someone on our list, who we have determined cannot serve any purpose in the future, it can only be a good thing. Even if the replacement amounts to nothing, at least we are trying to improve our list. I'd rather that than to keep the fringe players and extend the rebuild into perpetuity.

No thanks.

Pass!

:thumbsu: Thank you. I said 20 over the next 2 years and got criticised everywhere. I believe Lord Lucifer and Arrow were similar in their views.

Bottom line is I am just happy with what's happening and see a real future. Go Blues

"I told you so" has never been so sweet. I am also happy.

You did, I thought we would wait another year and have 8 next year with retirements, contracts running out and a better draft ...

Suspect SOS has his eye on a couple late in the draft where other clubs say Pass, as well as a DFA or two.

Interesting to see if we go Mullett or another moneyball Pick ...
