You're confident of this?

I want it to be the case, but just concerned about his ball-winning ability.
Sure looks good when he bursts out of stoppages though, but we'll need to see a lot more of that and not just once every couple of games.

If....big if....Cuningham was able to clock up his rating to 25 possessions a game, we'd have a serious inside mid on our hands.
Unfortunately it rarely pans out that way where low-possession players become high possession players.......but it's not for lack of development.
Cuningham has been given plenty of inside mid minutes to develop him that way.

Just to add a bit of perspective, the highest possession winner in history was only clocking up just over 2 contested and 2 uncontested disposals per game over Cuningham at the same age..

As per your link, he still averaged 50% more disposals than Cuningham at the same age though.

It's hard seeing DC become a high disposal type player at AFL level when he never has been at the lower levels. He is seriously impressive when he attacks the contest and is a beautiful kick (especially set shots for goal), in my opinion it would be a massive bonus for us if he becomes a long term player. I just don't see him ever being a high possession player.

Cuningham will be fine. He's a bit younger and a later developer than a few others. A bit of maturity and he will really step up. Has all the tools. Injury interrupted first 2 years and only 11 games.

The more pertinent point is that Mitchell is amassing double the disposals now than he was when Cuningham's current age.

Trying to work out why we did not grab Crameri. Kicks goals and we desperately need one of those....and if he didn't, I would fight him.
moods bringing the mongrel..........

This could bite me in the rear very quickly, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Cunningham is our best midfielder in a few years time.

There is something special about him, clinical finisher, great disposal and a dare i say, a small Judd like ability to win the ball and run away from a pack with burst.

The probability is low because he is going to be competing against Brownlow medalists in crippa, SPS and fisher but its chance ;)
Bit of a Nigel Lappin you say ?

Cuningham's potential is that he will hurt the opposition with his posessions, as it seems his disposal is elite, and he's shown damn good goal kicking ability as well. Twenty disposals in a game from him will be far more damaging than forty by Mitchell.

Have you completely forgotten the game where we almost beat Essendon when he played a blinder yet only kicked 1.9?

Is an absolutely shocking kick for goal, and in an undersized key position player you really need to nail what shots you get.

Given that you compared the two at the same age, the most pertinent point is that Mitchell was the better player at the same age and was already showing signs of being able to rack up possessions, something we're yet to really see from Cuningham.

You know right now if a Carlton forward kicked 1.9 I would get drunk and cry, because it means that the ball was getting into our forward line.
After 7 years of Casboult we have no right to point fingers at Crameri.

Cunners is going to be very important this year. Barring injuries see him taking significant midfield minutes off Murphy.

Can tackle, can sprint, can kick, doesn't panic. Given our current midfield set up with Cripps and Kennedy, see him as an important requirement.

Hopefully Murphy teaches him the art of finding more of the footy as Murphy is a good accumulator.

I hope you're correct - but given Cuningham has only averaged 12 possessions per game he has a very long way to go.

He has never been a big possession getter - I worry that this may not change.

Pretty sure Fisher is going to spend more minutes off half-forward than anywhere else this season, probably swapping with SPS.

Cuningham will mostly play mid. Has the speed/endurance combo for it and will keep growing his game.
Must say I am a Zac fan however does the fact he is one sided limit his effectiveness as a small forward. He is great defensively however for Carlton to kick decent totals it must get more in front of goals from its small crumbing forwards. I feel he is too unselfish to play up forward. I see him as a pure on baller. Just needs to grow physically to be able to compete.

As for Cuningham, maybe he is better off playing as a half back where he gets led to the ball. Got a feeling he was never an accumulator of the ball even at TAC level. Would be ideal seeing him running off the half back line.

That's rather my point; why have two inaccurate full forwards???

Worst case scenario is as we've collectively described: a clever half-forward who can genuinely add bite around some stoppages, and a HBFer with an elite speed/endurance combo. For pick 19 and 24, you'd take that.

To be clear, I'm saying play Fisher off HF, not in a deeper role, as he's less likely to be so exposed as one-sided. How quickly he makes decisions also assists him, and I'm sure he'll keep working on his right sided disposal in training. Simmo was as one-sided as you'll see them, and he's made great strides over the years.

Where's SPS's best position next year? On the wing/half forward?
Would love to see him spend majority of the time onball. A combination of Cripps, SPS, Kennedy, fisher, Cunningham, then a Cerra/rayner & Bonar maybe gets me pumped for the future!

Somewhere in that 5-15m range just off the contest to receive the handball from Cripps or Kennedy on the inside.

It actually doesn't work like that..!
If a player finds the ball he can bring others into the game
Mitchell is an inside and under type
Cunningham isn't
Cunningham needs to be part of a linkage with others and he needs to be providing the option to keep the ball moving or team possession
