Port know that their list needs a regeneration however they screwed the pooch on this one by locking in spuds to multi year contracts

They have FA currency and a bunch of under achievers who are not only over paid but on long term contracts
"Premature Escalation" the AFL Prospectus called it for Port. Thought they were closer to a Premiership than they were, so they locked up all their players to long term deals and spent all their draft capital for a few years bringing in "big guns" in Dixon and Ryder. Ryder got suspended and Dixon hasn't been good at all and it's left them with an inability to continue to improve their list. It's probably what forced them to double down in the last draft and swap out 2 picks for 4, but that's a risky move too, especially when you're giving up top 10 picks to do it.

It's a tough position to be in when you think you're close (or think you are) though. We could have easily fell into the trap by giving up multiple 1sts for Gibbs and we've also been lucky/smart enough to not pay up huge biscuits for the guys we recruited. Betts as a FA, Lynch was a 2nd round pick trade, Jenkins trade was a 10 pick downgrade, Charlie/Hartigan/Laird off the rookie list etc

Well he's had a bit of experience as a head coach so I don't think it's unreasonable to assume a bit of versitility. But it's hard to say he'd definitely make a good midfield coach. Though put it this way, I'd much prefer to see someone with an eye for the game running our midfield than someone who has time and again proven not to be up to the task in Campo. So I'll say midfield. Our backline is okay.
Just lets get Bassett back into our fold before the Pear use him as a Kern replacement and crack a premiership.
Either of these things could happen! Just get him.

Dixon is basically the same player he was at Gold Coast. I have him in a drafting/goal kicking game we play with some guys I know through work and have watched him closely long before most Tealsters knew of him.

There he had Tom Lynch by his side so his contested mark stats looked good as the best defender had to decide which guy to go to. He rarely lead for the ball and took advantage of mismatches, he was top four for winning a one on one contest in 2015. This is due to Lynch drawing the better defender and Dixon playing on midgets.

There was also little expectation to kick goals as GC were just starting out A lot of goals he did kick were during junk time when the game was over and the other team were in cruise mode.

When you go back to look at their best years, they stole a lot of their wins by coming from behind when the opposition thought they had the game in the bag, they had the belief that they were fitter than the opposition and continued to play as if the game was winnable when most teams would drop their shoulders. It was admirable but unsustainable when oppositions started believing it too and wouldn't let them get into the game in the last qtr to win it. You lose enough games and you stop believing you will overrun the opposition.
Champion teams don't come from behind, they stay in front.

Trial games, but always hilarious when the pear lose and meltdowns occur. Keep it up Kern.
I think 'trial games' is a reasonable thought process but if any club needs to address how they approach their pre-season it's Port. Since the infamous folded-arm bathwater game in Alice in throwing the reins to an assistant their season has been a carbon copy of how they start.

The kool-aid drinkers from a few years ago are now Chicken Littles.

The official 3 minute highlights package that for 97% of it were different games. 1 highlight (a mark) a game.

Inspiring stuff.

It would be like us locking away 5 mckays. At least our list management issues have been relatively minor compared to the power mess

Reading the Port board has been amusing, in summary:

Hinkley is shit
Dixon is shit
Bonner is shit
Impey is shit
Leaders are shit
Trengove up forward is shit
Skills are shit
Port are shit
Jonas is shit
Gameplan is shit
Voss is shit

Edit: more shit
Two of my favourites:

The football department sold our future away with Ryder and Dixon.
Get ****** Hinkley you lying ****head

Round 19 2012

There is still 9 of them running around and are seen as their 'gun' players. All 9 played in that soft EF against Richmond.

2014 was a massive outlier. And the last half of the year also tells you it was nothing flash to begin with.

Getting the bus back from Mount Gambier makes no sense.

Especially with Pittards hammy. And surely jumping on a bus half an hour after an AFL game and sitting for five hours is not a great for post match rehab.

They could have easily been back in Adelaide by 9pm via plane.

Surely a club with Cathay Pacific as a sponsor could organise a charter flight if no commercial flight was suitable.

Did Richmond use a bus or did they stay in Mount Gambier overnight?

Pre season is all about practicing for the main season, here they are trying to replicate travelling to China.

5 hours on the bus to Mt Gambier, 5 hours on the bus back home = 10 hour flight to China.

Maybe the players wanted a scenic view of the Coorong on the way home ;)

They caught the bus?!?!?!

Actually, this kinda makes sense.

My partner regularly travels to "The Mount" for work. She flies Rex, which i think she says is the only airline that goes there. And they do it in tiny planes. They couldn't catch a commercial flight, it wouldn't be big enough. They'd need to charter, or bus. Surprised no one said, "Road Trip!" and jumped in their cars to the tune of Convoy!

Except for Impey, i don't think he's allowed to drive now. He'd have been a passenger, just like in real life.
