I recon if you could just get the sports pack they would get heaps more takers.
I would likely get it. But I'm also scared off by all the ads. That's what I like about Netflix.

Ads are not a problem on Foxtel sport (or movies). They are far better than free-to-air in those respects, and are in HD.
When I have to watch the GF on FTA, it's a real come-down.

Whilst this is true, ads on Foxtel are on the increase. It won't be long before they find their way back into sport sadly.

Ditto

Like mistylake I believe 500,000 would get a stand alone Sports Pack while I suggest only 100,000 have the sports+basic*

*very rubbery figures but the ratio would be right.

I'd guess that the business model is designed to sell the 'awesome' base content to cover the costs of installing the infrastructure/hardware required. Once a critical mass is achieved, perhaps greater flexibility will result.

I'd expect FOXTEL would have far less rubbery modeling which enforces their decision to keep a base package with multiple add ons.

I'd also expect the basic package to be pretty cheap to run, which then subsidizes the add ons.

I would agree if we hadn't been saying this for 20 years :D

You may well be right ( on how rubbery and the base model)

Considering Foxtel/Austar whatever have been around for over 20 years and they are having to drop their price to keep market share I think the horse has already pissed off out the gate.

I expect a look at what's happening in the US might shed light on where this might be heading.

Most people have Foxtel for the Sports .....if you could choose Sports only, they could not fund the other channels .....the reality is that when you choose Sports it's actually $25 (basic) plus $29 (sports) ....allowing us to choose sport only would almost halve the revenue for a majority of users
maybe I'm the only one who's too stubborn to buy basic plus sports when I only want sports, but I think if they did offer a sports only option at around the $30 mark they would attract a bucketload of new subscribers

I'm one of the many people who used to have Foxtel but got rid of it. Used to like the documentaries, but later it became an endless stream of 'why aliens built the pyramids', 'let's dig for gold in Alaska', 'let's move furniture in Alaska', 'selling old used shit', 'why this snotty hanky is in a museum' et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Not good value for money.

So I rang up Foxtel and asked for a sports subscription. They come back saying "That'll be 51 dollars." And I'm just like ...

The stuff that gets me is the utter American bias of the "History Channel". They twist history around to claim how great the USA was when the actual facts as the world knows are in direct conflict with what they are claiming.

Every 'prevailing' civilisation does this.

Even when they lose (Vietnam) they do a good job of shifting attention away from the long-term damages of their warfare. ;)

Too much money to be made out of playing the victim attempting to triumph over the baddies.
I just thought of a song that would work well with that, it's 'Never Tear Us Apart' by INXS.

My view on Trump:
Trump is just going to follow a pattern now very familiar to him, make heaps of money and everything else will take care of itself. You can see with the staff he's put in place, he's aiming to become the king of GDP. None of these pesky environment or climate related restraints, lets just skip that boring stuff and make america great again!! Fire up the furnaces, restart the production lines and churn the stuff out. Lets get out there and harness those resources!! I can almost see the Rosie the Riveter posters going up lol!

The results probably won't be as spectacular as he'd like, but will be better than any other president has achieved in recent times. The reason I say the results wont be as spectacular is that there are many global and economic factors against the good old days. Many countries private debt to GDP ratios are still in the territory where economies have not been sustainable and they had to tread water, this includes the US, Australia and China.

After he gets the US economy up a bit, then things get interesting. It has the potential to be used wisely. For example, people hate taking a loss, however, a foregone gain is far more palatable. I'm talking about a potential path to climate action. No one wants to have increased taxes or spending burdens put upon them to fund climate action, however, missing out on a tax cut and instead keeping the tax the same but putting the dollars towards climate action, people will be far more open. Whether trump would do this remains to be seen.

Its also just as likely he'll continue pumping the economy as hard as it will go. We all know where that ends tho. Another bust. Also, without severe adjustments to the economic setup, it just ends up exacerbating the issues the US already has, in particular widening inequality - the very basis upon which trump was elected. It's quite likely trump will end up making things worse for his voters, by running a conventional GDP based economy. Also, despite the denials of mainstream economics, GDP is influenced by the environment and climate. So these things can come around to bite you. Things are much harder in the real world than in business and I think trump might find this out the hard way.

Then we'll see Sanders elected - and then you'll really have a candidate for assassination!

I think this is unfair. Many people think Sanders is just a troublesome poster but assassination? Just put him on ignore.

you say that but the ignore button doesn't remove replies and makes replies to ignored people look like normal posts, which gets confusing. So what other options do we have?
