Let me tell you a story. On a business trip to Japan in 2010, our group stayed in a hotel in Wakayama that catered for Japanese guests almost exclusively up until that point. This place was so traditional that they had Japanese baths that were unisex - they had to erect a bamboo fence down the middle of the bath so there was privacy between men and women to make us feel more comfortable (since you bathe naked in those places).

Anyway, one evening there was a karaoke night, and one of the guys on the trip got really drunk and accidentally fell into a poor girl serving drinks. The broken glass cut her head open and she was bleeding everywhere. Do you know what the management did first? Not rush her to the hospital, or castigate the drunken fool - nope, they made HER apologise to him while at the same time apologising themselves.

The fact that he didn't feel enough shame to do the same is exactly the reason why Australians generally don't understand the concept of face. It's about presenting yourself with integrity and honour above all things. And one of the main ways you gain face is by respecting those that are older or more advanced than you.

Gold Coast would gain a lot of face in China by being gracious enough to forego their home jumper and wearing their clash to honour Port (who would also gain massive face), because in Chinese eyes, we are both older historically and of higher value in their relationships. The AFL would also gain face by making a decision that showed their support for the senior of two "subordinate" clubs.

All parties know this. It's not about the colours, but about an opportunity to really cement Port Adelaide into China as a club with status. Gold Coast can wear red and it really won't be a big deal - it will just cost us a massive commercial advantage while giving them limited return in comparison.
Japan isn't China, you really should leave this discussion.

Couple of things.

Has Port actually considered what the players think? I'm sure they're going to be very excited to be playing a game in f*cking Shanghai, knowing the upheaval it will take, and knowing that they then have 14 weeks without a break.

What happens after China? As in... all we've heard about in this entire pre-season whenever Port is discussed is The China Game. What happens afterwards? They know it's a whole season right? Seems to me that Port like to focus on squeezing everything they can out of isolated events - eg. putting stupid amounts of hype in to Showdowns - because they know that in most other measures they're fuuuuu*cked.
At least they'll have 3x Grand Finals to focus on this year, not just the usual 2x Showdowns.

If Port go to China and lose to the Gold Coast Suns, and lose face, will they commit Harikari ??

Well Harikiri is actually Japanese, but that's an easy mistake to make.

Some of the most incandescent, brilliant minds in the world have confused China with Japan in this very thread.

But apparently the Power get a free pass, because of their status? They have so much face, they'll need a bigger head to fit it on.
That part is 100% pure unadulterated bullshit. The importance of face cannot be understated - Janus just has no idea how that applies in this particular instance.

I realise this, and is why I posted it, because of the China/Japan thing. It was supposed to be part of the joke. I thought it was funny !!

And given Kochie said the Chinese have no idea who Port Adelaide are, how can they claim seniority?

Absolutely agree. They should wear it all the time. But not against Port. Or not in China.

I'll check with Kochie.

Like the Lions clash jumper, except for that silly white panel down the side, why!

I wonder if Adelaide United now have to check with Kochie if they can wear their Red kit next time they play an ACL game in China? They do have a white kit you know [emoji23]

The Reds played in their new Red and Yellow strip against Jiansu Suning in Nanjing this week. Since the home team wore blue the entire crowd seemed confused and started cheering for the REDS. This resulted in a spectacular away win for our boys.

The problem is, the chinese understand soccer, they won't know when to cheer when watching the AFL. They'll probably cheer every point the suns kick.

Nah Port are doing great wotk in Shanghai educating them about the game.

Fourteen high schools (city population of 24million) are having Aussie Rules as part if their PE curiculam. So the Chinese supporters will be well versed in our game.

On an unrelated topic, does anyone remember playing Korfball in high school ....

We had the Rams come and spend an afternoon with us once a week for a term, assume they did that all over Adelaide... went well for them.

I loved Rams games.

But I think it was more about the razzmatazz around it and not the actual game.

A bit like going to the footy for most Tealsters....

Yep, the Rams visited my primary school too as a young fella. We did Softcrosse for a term and had a great time trying both sports out in our PE lessons... but guess what? The footys came straight back out at recess and lunch because we simply didn't give a shit about either when we could just continue to enjoy the local sport we've grown up playing that is played by the local footy club we love too... the same will happen in Shanghai.
