I have a gut feeling that the Fagan/Noble combo will pull off a big coup in the trade/FA period this year, whether it's trading our first pick or trading in/out players and/or picks or a combination of both is to be seen. If we show definite signs of improvement and a definable path to success during the second half of the season opposition players would be more tempted to come to us.

If we could somehow snag Cameron, our first choice 22, all fit, would be looking pretty good.
From the team on the weekend:
Cameron for Harwood
Christiensen for Bastinac
A fit and full of confidence Schache for Smith
Withers for Paps
Robbo for Lester?
Looking stronger already.

What about 2017 pick 1?

Who goes out for Luke Davies-Uniacke and/or Jayden Stephenson:)

I think he'll be ours with our second rounder. Ballenden will be our port pick. After academies it'll be worty around pick 20-22 so a good value trade for us.
How many Academy kids do you think will go in the first round?

Free agency compensation is more likely to push back our second round pick that Academy bids.

If Ballenden continues the way he is he might slide out the first round. He's gone from 4, 9 to 11 on Bishop's draft board.

It'll be interesting if he doesn't show well in the Championships team. That'd mark four tournaments running (2016 Div 2, 2016 Championships, 2017 Div 2 and 2017 Championships) where he's underperformed against other talented teams beyond a few highlights. At some point people will only be paying for "potential", with zero results to show for it.

Yup. The form of Ballenden is concerning. I hoped he would live up to expectations, and that we would be adding a gun KPF via the academy. But he just hasn't shown any form this year. Glimpses are not enough to matching an early first round bid, and I'd even consider passing if bid on at the pick right before Ports pick.

It's quite possible there will be no Academy or Father Son kids drafted in the first round this year.

I'm happy for Ballenden to struggle with form this year. With Schache back on board we can take our time developing Ballenden. He strikes me as someone who will improve in a professional environment. He's a project, so getting him cheap would be good.

Whilst I personally have reservations on Ballenden as a top 10 or top 15 pick(as I have with every other academy kid apart from really Keays, obviously got the Hipwood call wrong) and I don't really think those deals are ever likely to eventuate, I wouldn't be against the 1st scenario you mentioned.

Personally, I haven't seen enough to make an informed opinion as I live in Victoria and focus on those boys more. But what I have seen of him(two games) he has been seriously, seriously poor. Just didn't do a single thing right or show me the slightest glimpse of talent. Hopefully they were just bad games. But I certainly wouldn't have him in my top 20 so far for next year. I know a few people who also think he is pretty overrated.

Never been a big Ballenden fan(mind you, I had Hipwood anywhere from pick 20 onwards:$), which I've made pretty clear since last year. Whenever I've seen him live last year and this year he has failed to show anything. But from some video footage I've come across, he has shown a couple of glimpses. Which is indeed all you look for with KPF's coming through the ranks.

But he's no first round pick in my mind.

Don't think it would be a deal breaker for the crows. They have proven ability to turn 15-40 picks into gold & might have bigger fish to fry anyway extracting Gibbs from carlton
Are the Crows having another crack Gibbs this year or are you talking allowed so to speak?

Would like us to hve a real crack at Steven May. Backline complete for a few years and a brute too.

Also may reduce the frequency he knocks our players out.

He's a terrific defender and may well be a nice guy but I'd be uneasy about recruiting him. He's a thug on-field.

Ballenden has the talent he is just lazy. Hopefully Fagan/Noble can get him to extract the digit and start using the undeniable talent he has.

Labelling him a "thug" is pretty harsh IMO

Admittedly, he's had a bit of history with a couple of our players...Rocky, Stef .... but if he wanted to come to us, I'd embrace him with open arms.

He admitted he stuffed up with the Stef incident and I Reckon Rocky could forgive and forget if it meant getting him to the Lions.

He's got genuine leadership qualities and I'd rate him second only to Rance as a last line defender.

It's probably all irrelevant though.

If he leaves GC it's probably for the bright lights in Melbourne

His few games for the Lions ressies that I saw he looked good, especially given he was in a forward line with 3 other KPFs

I think he'll take time to develop as a KPF as he learns the work ethic needed, but as we see when he runs in the ruck, his work ethic jumps right up. In both the forward line and ruck his tackling/pressure on opposition I thought was quite good. He will take time but given his field kicking, marking and skills by hand are boarding/if not elite so long as he is in a professional environment he'll flourish so long as he's driven imo.
