Thanks dlanod, appreciate it. So half of a rookie's salary is outside the cap. Does it all become part of the cap when he plays one game, is that how it works?

It used to be that their salary became prorataed into the cap for the period while they were promoted. Given promotion is no longer necessary I'm not sure what the new ruling is (cbfed checking the new CBA right now) but I'd suspect it's prorataed into the cap on a week by week basis when they're in the senior team.

Pretty interesting how they are swinging the axe through our tall forward stocks. Gone is Schache, Close, Hammelmann, Freeman. Replaced with only Ballenden. Leaves us (for tall KPPS) with just Hipwood and Walker...and means that without a doubt they are 100% committed to draft Ballenden now, regardless if he gets bidded on early.

Seem a bit light on tall forwards? I know smaller and speedier is the way, but just seems a bit light if Walker and/or Hipwood go down to injury, and I doubt they will pump many games immediately into young Connor just yet.

Perhaps Matty Eagles is in Fagan's plan to slot into the regular lineup?

If Eagles makes it as a key back, we can swing Andrews or McStay forward. Also we've given Oscar M 2 years which I'm rapt about. At 204cm. He's pretty hard to stop from marking the ball. Reckon he will definitely debut in 2018. there's also Skinner long term.

14 talls (I think, counting rucks) is too many, but if we draft Ballenden and Payne we will have 12. Much better balanced list. Also we have Lester, Bell, Dawson and Bewick to play 3rd marking forward role.

Having experienced midfielders in the reserves means more to development than experienced KPFs.

Just feels like we cant get the balance of talls and shorts right. We have just gone from a season of too many talls and then cut several of them. Of course if we bring in Ballendon and Payne that may balance out.

Just feels like we cant get the balance of talls and shorts right. We have just gone from a season of too many talls and then cut several of them. Of course if we bring in Ballendon and Payne that may balance out.

A lot of these lists are also omitting McInerney, who IMO should be included given we just re-signed both him and Smith and Smith is definitely not a KPF. If the aim is to only play a couple of true talls plus a Lester-type player in the seniors we end up with Hipwood and Walker, with McInerney, Ballendan and possibly any other draftees in the reserves.

If the consensus at the club is that Close isn't going to make the grade, I don't see the benefit of holding on to him when we can try out other potential players in that spot in the reserves. While injury depth is nice I think we're still at the stage where picking up more lottery tickets and seeing how they develop is potentially more beneficial than having injury cover that might stop a six win season becoming a four win season.

Having Claye on the rookie list will be handy. Not often you have experienced, mature campaigners of his relative quality in reserve like that.

Even then, rookie lists are changing, and if Claye keeps injury free for a while, I would not at all be surprised to see him back as a regular in the first team. He's always had loads of potential - just hasn't managed to put together enough games to realise it. Of course, if he gets another serious injury, then this time next year it may determined to be too much, and off he goes.

Here's a fun stat. In the time his brother has been at the Lions, Claye has managed exactly one AFL win per season, after playing 8, 9, and 9 games in 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Not a great stat for Claye. When he's in the team, the win rate is only 11.5%. Dayne's win rate is higher than that at 16.2%, but they're both lower than the club in general at 18.2%. We have a higher win rate without either brother in the team. Of course, that's too small a sample size to actually draw a correlation. (Note: all of these stats are 2015-2017 only, being Dayne's time at the club).

Sadly, the two brothers have only managed 2 wins together at AFL level, from 17 starts.
