Do we need to follow other teams tactics in order to win? why not alter our own tactics to suit the list we have/will have. Following another teams formula is dangerous.
This year was almost a holding year where we dramatically had to change the way we play as unfortunately we are actually built around him (Edit - Naitanui - dunno how i left that bit out).
2015 he plays a full season and we are top 4 for inside 50s
2016 misses a large chunk of games and we slip to 10th in this stat
2017 does not play and we go down to 13th
Its nothing we don't already know but supply is such an issue for us - we used to play the ball from our forward 50, lock it in and get repeat entries but now we don't get the ball forward and when we do, our forward pressure which used to be a top 4 benchmark has been well and truly overtaken by other clubs who have taken it to a new level.
We chose to do the old Geelong thing and play the ball from our half back line. Intercept marking and create from there. Problem is we severely lack that link from half back to half forward which was not so evident when we used to own the ball in our forward half. We can't play the press up and get out the back run and gun style as...well as we don't have that pace or smarts!
Huge off season
Do we look to go back to what we knew - rely on Naitanui getting to his best and add some high pressure forwards.
Do we try to keep this years plan and try to improve on it. Intercept marking is a huge strength and maybe without priddis and mitchell we can add something to improve midfield pressure and make that an even greater strength. We just then need to find a better link between the arcs to enable quick rebounding - can darling play a tom lynch type role? Probably not as he isn't as nimble.
What we need. A couple of high pressure small forwards, a mid size link between defence and forward, smart, quick thinking skills from half back and midfield talent who can handle and apply pressure and execute skills under pressure.
Simple fixes!
