Just to add, not out of the question that he could kick 40 goals a year, if he stays fit he is good for 25+ goals, only 25 so a handy small forward/LeCras replacement, for the right price.

Availability is a vital attribute when you only have 22 games in a season. Faz just hasn't shown the ability to stay on the park. He could play the next few years without missing a game and kick 35+ goals each year, but there's no track record to suggest this

To understand the trade needs, we need to forecast where our development is likely to be with our younger players. I loved the approach from Richmond that meant the club went back to why they recruited the young guys and then played them in their original position of strength and not where others wanted them to play.

2016 Draftees
Venables - he was injured and for the 3rd year in a row, he missed a large chunk of the season. That said, he looks quality and a real option on the HFF. Let us not let him fester at East Perth. I would play Venables ahead of Cripps, Hill and LeCras as a smaller forward. He has pace and class.
Rotham - we got very little from our 2nd round pick (rarely do) yet he possesses the pace and the kicking skills we need either on the wing or HBF. We have to prioritise him during the summer to get him ready to challenge for a spot/free up a HBF to allow other to go to the midfield. He must make sure it is 45 plus a day he puts into the gym.
Rioli - a crumbing forward is a position of huge needs and he looks the goods. Fitness is still the priority and he should be prioritised by the match committee. He would benefit from a really good mentor to inspire him. He needs to make sure he is fit enough to provide defensive pressure.
Waterman - injured and will hopefully be knocking next season. The biggest concern will be does he play Jack's position or can we play both in the forward line? either way, he will possibly need to be very high and hunt up the ground so he must build a tank.
Gorter - still struggling to understand him and see no need for him so stay at East Perth assuming he is still on the list.
Watson - showed loads early as a small and dashing defender capable of taking on the likes of Betts and Green. Can a lot of attacking flair so now need to teach him poise and focus on decision making.

2015 Draftees
Partington - showed enough late this year. He needs to build his rig and his tank and just put in hard over the summer to be the inside mid that warranted our second round pick. Assuming he does, give him a sustained run and let him find his way at AFL. One thing he needs to do is to learn how to rove to NicNat. He is more inside that outside midfield.
Cole - he is a genuine midfield and HBF. His preseason was almost non existent so a really good summer should see him fit and ready with more bulk and a bigger tank meaning we trust him in the midfield.
Mutimer - I do not have high hopes here as he looks depth. Whilst his couple of games gave some hope, I would not be that confident he is truly AFL standard. He was an inside/outside mid when we drafted him but he was not a high possession winner, line breaker or inside bull. Pity as we could have chosen Mountford who went 3 places after Kurt.
Allen - a second or third tall forward, more in the lead up role than the pack mark. He needs to put together a body of work with East Perth because he has not done that yet and will need to prove he has the goods. I real danger year for him as Waterman may well overtake him and Darling and Kennedy are automatic picks meaning little scope to shine.

2014 Draftees
Duggan - he needs to shave that bum fluff off his top lip and become that defensive midfielder. He now has a tank and I think the Scott Selwood run with/defensive midfielder is where he plays best. Forget Hutchings - Dugs is our man. Besides, no tagging role he can still offer a lot.
Lamb - probably off at year end but if not, then play him wing or HBF. His issue is staying in the game and I would like the club to get Beau Waters to mentor him. Not with millennium soft love - a bit of Beau the hard arse development.
Nelson - predominantly a HBF who played a some midfield. Showed prior to injury that his best could be as a running HBF. Did not have the confidence when he returned from broken bone but suggest we hold back making him a midfielder to allow him to master his HBF craft and to develop his tank.

I would write up Karpany but to go back to 2013 draft means they are starting their 5th year at the club and come on - that is half the career of a sucessful AFL player. He is depth.

JLT Series (not just opener)

• Defense: Frankie to the back pocket, Rotham to take the kick ins and play off the likes of McGovern and Barrass offering options, Nelson as a rebounding and fast running defender, Lamb as the third tall
• C/Midfield: Duggan as defensive mid, Redden as ruck rover, Sheed as centre and Partington as rover. Cole to come in for second rotation with Duggan.
• Forwards: Waterman to be given a go in pocket with Rioli on the other side. Use Vardy as CHF freeing up Darling.

Now we will need coaches that can bring a game plan to suit what we have got. That said, we cannot go with 3 talls in defence and 2 ruckman. The game has gone past that.

It is a failure isn't it! I'm interested to see what happens next year. Simmo has tried to make the most of our premiership window which is fair but I do have concerns he's not in it for the long game. Hopefully willing to work through a couple down years, blooding kids and building depth for the good of the club. I've got no problems spending a couple years outside the 8 if we can build a really strong under 25 group of players

Simo can only play with the cards (players) he's got.

Refer posts about our drafting history in the past 7 years. Sure that analysis conveniently excludes Naitanui a year earlier and Lycett is injured. Partington was dropped after 6 games straight and Nelson will come into the side. Using a 2nd to get Yeo was the highlight of Vosso's period in charge and we will need to wait and see about Venables, Rotham and Rioli.

Yes, LeCras used to be good.

Fasolo is 25, LeCras will either sign a one year deal with us or won't be playing so it's a handy replacement at the right price.

It's hard to replace someone that was a star like Lecras, but you only have to go to a game live to see he's lost his legs, he can barely make the distance from 40m now. It was true the back half of last year, and most of this year. To think he's going to regain it at 32 is optimistic.

6 drafts (2011 - 2016). You'd expect at least your first rounder, and generally another to make it, so 3 out of 12 is pretty rubbish.

Vozzo presided over the worst off-season in club history: 2011. Drafted Newman, McInnes, and elevated Hams. Lost Ebert, and got reamed by Port in the trade. Traded in Josh Hill. Took Blayne Wilson in the pre-season draft. The 2011 crop should be around the 23-24 mark currently and starting to shoulder the load for the club. This followed by 2012's trades meant we have a 2 year gap in experience of players that should be hitting their prime now. What we do have is one player who is nearing 30 and has been dropped to the WAFL, and another who has struggled through this year. The draftees have been delisted except McInnes, who might be pushed on, and Hutchings (drafted at 20), who is fringe at best.

Those 2 years are what's put us in the current situation. The only person on the senior list in the 23-24 age bracket is Elliot Yeo, meaning we have 1 bloke pushing into his prime years at the club right now.

Yep those two years were the killers.

Also happened to coincide (not coincidentally) with the fact we suddenly made finals.

Makes you wonder whether we got slack because we were suddenly 'competing' again.

I like the look of the 2016 recruits, would be pleased with a similar turn out in 2017's group (plus a bit of luck with injury and boldness in selection).

IIRC Venables was closing in on a possible debut when he got turf toe, Waterman being mentioned before illness(?) and Rioli was talked about very late, so hopefully with a bit of luck we will see all 3 early next season plus 1 or 2 yet to be added.

Discussions at Claremont were about letting him take a year off - his game was based around being at the base of the pack and being a contested inside midfielder. Getting glandular fever for the length he had it and the depth he had it has meant his aerobic capacity was shot. The jury is still out as to whether he will ever get to a WAFL level and hopes are up for a possible return in 2018 at Tigerland.

Ok since we are no chance to get Will Minson yet again, this is my trade prediction:

Scott Lycett, Andrew Gaff, Chris Masten, Will Schofield to Gold Coast for Jack Martin. Elevate Francis Watson, draft Liam Ryan, extend Josh Hill at the expense of Lecras. Hurn steps down, Martin takes the captaincy with Lewis Jetta elevated to the leadership group. Andrew McLeod into the coaches box with responsibility for the forward line. Get it done.

Him, Tim Kelly, and Liam Ryan would be worth a look at with late round / rookie picks. It would be a shame to burn high picks after ignoring them for years.

Rather we hold him, Vardy may have gotten through the year, but he still has a long history of injuries.

I agree he is at his lowest value but if we are shooting for glory we need some mids and a JJK replacement. He is the highest value asset but least important asset if that makes sense. We've seen you can make a decentish fist of it with spudly rucks.

Lycett is worth more to us than any pick 20'ish. If we end up with vardy rucking significant time again we'd fall in a massive hole every time Nic Nat had a rest during the game

Opinions are going to differ there. Some may suggest Vardy's gone past Lycett's contributions already.

If Lycett continues losing time to injury we're not selling low, we're just selling.
