So hearing from the trade talk at the Brownlow gathering that there was speculation linking Gaff with the Hawks. Hawthorn's first 2 picks this year are 32 and 42. So, apart from Stratton who turns 29 in March next year wanting to join a congested backline overflowing with 3rd talls (and our backline is our strength anyway), who could they possibly offer up to us? Hartung is one but reality he was taken second round at pick 24 and he is serviceable current C grader with potential to be a B grader. I surely hope we do not get stuck with a crap trade period because of this.

If there is serious talk about Gaff to Melbourne, then please let it be the Saints. We really need to hang out for a top 10 draft pick. No point in getting another B grade transfer and a pick in the second or third round to top it up.
Surely we wouldn't be dumb enough to trade for Hawthorn's scraps? There's pretty much nothing on their list that I'd want back in a Gaff trade.

the ****. we actually talking about Shaun Higgins

NO NOT THE HIGGINS FROM NORTHS.

Jack Higgins. He just won the TAC Cup . Best and Fairest. 178cm forward mid who gets a ton of the ball, kicks goals and tackles like a terrier.

THAT HIGGINS.:D

Ryan Burton or they can get stuffed !!!

Could we interest North??

Wonder if Gaff + 13 will work? Only problem i dont like with it is that we could keep this years pick and then get a pick for him next year.

Though on the hand we would be a chance to actually draft a quality mid at pick 4.

Free Agency - surely any Gaff contract would be pretty high triggering a pick immediately after our first?

Losing two brownlow medallists will mean we are going to drop right back next year and with a top six draw we could end up with picks 3 and 4 in the draft.

We will go into next year expecting this, licking our lips and the AFL will then go and remove free agency compensation and we end up with donuts.

Gaff and our second for Saints pick 8, Acres and their third.

I think Higgins is the stumbling block

Yes, Shaun Higgins would be a stumbling block. But it's OK, because we don't care about given names. We can trade Bill Gaff and Mohammed Masten to get him. I'm also interested in Daisy Dangerfield.

That would be a better start but is unlikely to progress given the Hawks are also trying to rebuild their midfield.
Yeh no chance they'd give up Burton. Just really not sure what they think they could give us for Gaff. Unless they were able to trade something to someone else for an earlyish first round pick.

The Hawks would be looking to involve a 3 rd team maybe a Melb team to offload a player or draft picks ..

Very reluctant to trade Bill, think he has AA potential

Gaff isn't a free agent until the end of next season. Would do that Saints trade though, seems pretty fair.

Not Shaun Higgins the 18 yr old Higgins in the draft. Will need pick 7 or 8 , to get him
I am aware of that, but the poster I quoted directly mentioned Shaun.

Would love young Higgins. :)

All of sudden we see the headline:

O'MEARA HOMESICK
Hawthorn to give up* a valuable** asset for Eagles star midfielder

*offload
**cooked

Yeh that's what i meant - we could hold off on the free agency until next year - or trade him now. Both similar outcomes i think - though i doubt we would actually drop that far down the ladder and would end up with pick 10-13 for Gaff in compensation

Losing two brownlow medallists but gaining Nic Nat... I don't think the drop will be as pronounced as many fear.
Next years first or second rounder will be a nice carrot to dangle though, considering what a lot of people seem to think about out future prospects.

Ahh sorry, misread. He'd be restricted as well next year so we could force a trade if we really wanted to. I just think if he's said he wanted to go then we might as well trade him this year. Seems like a few Vic teams have some cash to spare after failing in the Martin/Kelly chase so if there's a few teams going after him we might be able to get a fair bit in a trade (assuming Gaff looks after us and doesn't nominate a team).
