I was thinking something similar. Our list is very old fashioned. Star FF who kicks 50% of the goals, slowish inside players feeding the ball to wingers. Only part of the ground that has evolved with the times is the backline and even that is debatable.Just thinking on Gaff, how many teams currently use a pure winger? Because that's what he is. Not a multi-role mid, not a player that goes forward, not a player that goes back. He's a serviceable link man, who is very one-sided.
I've got GWS (Scully and Whitfield), Bulldogs (Hunter), and Hawthorn (Smith) who use these type of players. I'm sure there's more, and I'm sure theres less prolific ones. But like the 2 ruckman thing, it appears you can get by OK without a superstar winger, and that sets Gaff firmly as trade-bait.
The downside of having a blue-chip trade piece such as Gaff is WCE have really never won a trade, except for the two instances that grabbed us top pick and the league has become a lot more professional since then.
It would have been had we actually played some of the young mids in the middle a bit more with himmitchell coming in and actually playing with our young guys before coaching was a great move .

I agree on this basis. This is why to me a Gaff trade makes sense. For mine, he is too one dimensional and we need to address our contested ball, speed and skills on the outside. In my opinion his type of player is easier to come by than an AA inside midfielder. If we trade Gaff and get Higgins and/or Clark, then we get players who project to be more versatile than Gaff at the moment. I can't help but think that Gaff is worth more to other teams right now than he is to us; buy low, sell high. Sell him now for draft picks or players which help us address our deficiencies.I was thinking something similar. Our list is very old fashioned. The game has gone past us and because of our **** list turnover we have players that would be handy 10 years ago but no longer. Imagine Gaff in place of Fletcher for example.
If we're playing 2 talls then theoretically all of Hurn Sheppard Yeo and Duggan should be able to have midfield minutes. Could probably argue 3 of them and Shep/Hurn as the "third tall" but 2 at a maximum have actually been given midfield time this season and are actually capable of playing there.
Similar to fwds. Lecca and Cripps should be able to, again theoretically, play midfield and play it well. As much as Toby Greene is a flog he's a gun player and very versatile.
Gaff is a good player but he's to predictable. "Priddis goes down on his knees, handballs out to Gaff who is running to the left of the pack".
Someone like Kelly is the modern day winger. Slippery and silky but can have his turn in the guts if he needs to. I realise he's an absolute jet and you can't just get a player like him from nowhere but the theory still applies.
I'd trade Gaff purely because he's a one trick pony and the game has gone past "playing your role/position" as a midfielder. All the mids need to at least be able to have a crack at every midfield aspect (inside and out), not necessarily dominant at both. Also be able to, at the very least, make contact with your non-preferred.

Not sure if this has been posted. However the More I read about gaff the more "likely" a move is a real possibility.

West Coast’s Andrew Gaff has also “indicated to people he will come back” to Melbourne, according to Waldron, while Geelong has “gone cold” on Jake Stringer, and Essendon “won’t give a first-round pick” for the Dogs forward.
Exactly what I was getting at. It was also something Simmo touted when coming to the club: developing multi-role players like they had at Hawthorn. Four seasons on we've probably got 3-4 of those in Shuey, Yeo, McGovern, and maybe Duggan and one of those is anchoreded to the midfield because we can't spare him to play creative minutes forward.I was thinking something similar. Mitchell undoubtably made us better. I'd say we'd probably have missed finals without him, so if he'd not played a single game for us we'd have a better draft pick. We'd also still very likely have him in the same coaching role next season provding that same knowledge and nous to our players. So in a season, knowing we'd be a non-contender without Naitanui, why improve the playing list with a guy who'd agreed to a coaching role for the season after?I think trading Mitchell for pick 88 was a bargain, and would still think so even if he never played a single game for us.
Brian Waldron wouldn't have a clue.
This is exactly the realisations that other Clubs like Hawthorn, Adelaide, and even GWS are making. In the past decade we've become a very old-fashioned club in the list management sense.I can't help but think that Gaff is worth more to other teams right now than he is to us; buy low, sell high.
How would feel about pick 7 and 8 for Gaff and 13?
It would be counter productive for us to give you an A grade player that would help you rise up the ladder diminishing your future firsts value .How would you guys feel about our future first being involved with a trade for Gaff?
I think it would be unlikely. Just get the feeling that the club might try to use them to trade up in the draft. Hence why I'm asking about our future first.
Freo have pick 5.......we dont.Hogan for Gaff and Lamb? Get it done. Surely if we have the cap space he's ours with what we could offer in a trade compared to The Dockers
How would you guys feel about our future first being involved with a trade for Gaff?
He is a ******* who knows **** all.
He is a failed chief executive best known for crippling a club by being a cheat.
I find Brian Waldron more credible then a Facebook page named AFL Trade Rumours. This is probably the first source ive seen the Gaff talk come from, other than something from 3AW or some radio station.
Whether these rumours become facts and are credible we will soon find out, furthermore it seems to be gaining momentum which was my original point.

Like how exactly?
Would probably still have to include 7 or 8.
Maybe 8 + next years first, which would probably be around 10 or so.
err pretty sure hogan is on decent $$, so gaff for hogan in that sense isn't improbable.Freo have pick 5.......we dont.
Gaff for Hogan doesn't add up. If Dees need to get picks and free up cap space for Lever how does Gaff help?
Talk that Watts needs to move out as well. Then who plays forward?
