FB: Ryan ~ Hamling ~ Logue
HB: Wilson ~ AP ~ Blakely
C: Hill ~ Fyfe ~ Hill
HF: Tucker ~ McCarthy ~ Walters
FF: Matera ~ Cox ~ Ballas
R: Sandi ~ Neale ~ Brayshaw

INT: Cerra ~ Bennell ~ Crowden ~ Langdon

Small/mobile/FAST forward line. Lock the ball in and score heavily from stoppages and counter attacks from half back.

Tabs/Ape/Cox/(Darcy?) fighting it out for the fwd-ruck position.

Switkowski looking to break into the fwd line - will be a very good pressure forward if others aren’t working hard enough.

Mundy, MJ, and Sandi to be phased out over the year. Ballas potentially too - but as his buddy, had to name him (Switas will be eyeing his spot).

Logue to take the resting mid (Danger, Martin, Grey types). Blakely averaged over 100 SC when back, so giving him the nod over Hughes - both offer similar out of the back line but Blakely has flexibility to go midfield.

Cerra to play back and mid in his first year. Brayshaw fwd and mid. Crowden - just love him so had to make room.
Hughes plays more accountable/man on man than Blakely in the back line. They are not competing for a place - Hughes is competing with Spurr and Nyhuis IMO.

Swap Hughes in for Blakely, who goes into the midfield to replace Brayshaw.

In the games Blakely played in defence last year the majority of the time he was actually playing on and negating the opposition's most dangerous small/medium forward while at the same time winning a ton of the ball. Over a four or five week period before his injury last year there was no better performed half back in the AFL. The value of Connor is that he can play on a man and is such a natural ball winner he will also win a ton of possessions. Whether he is playing defence or midfield. My guess is that he plays a 50/50 role next year splitting time equally between midfield and defence.

I didn't get to watch live at all so I could definitely have missed it but to me he looked like the 3rd man to the contest a LOT of the time.

I don't have a problem with him there at all as he was awesome, I just don't think he was playing the same role as Hughes.

That is a very attacking team and as much as I like it, I can't see it happening. With four Mid/Fwds on the bench would mean we go real small when a KPP needs a rest or if there is an injury to a big guy. I think there needs to be another KPF option or Mundy to help out!

Mundy -> Ballas @ FP gives many more options
Hughes -> Crowden @ INT for defensive option
Darcy -> Cox @ FF, let's test him out

Def - Hamling, APearce, Ryan, Wilson & Logue (Nyhuis)
Def/Mid - SHill, Blakley & Hughes
Mid - BHill & Neale
Fwd/Mid - Fyfe, Mundy, Bennell, Walters, Cerra, Tucker, Langdon & Brayshaw (Grey)
Fwd - McCarthy & Matera
Ruc/Fwd - Sandilands & Darcy (Taberner)

TBF - I’m not trying to predict the line up we will take.

But I would phase Mundy out - hes old and slow and not in future planning for mine. Been a great servant, but time to go. He’s can maybe pinch hit up forward, but he’s not a permanent forward. I deliberately only named the two talls forward and none on the bench to ensure we had pace and agility up forward to create pressure and repeat entries. If Cox or McCarthy got injured, Fyfe and/or Bennell could play out of the goal square in that rare occurance.

Hughes for Crowden makes sense. But only if Blakely isn’t playing defence. I wouldn’t mind Blakely playing mostly mid, but he offers more flexibility than Hughes, and I can see Blakely/Cerra sharing def/mid time. I don’t see Cerra playing much forward for us. He would be the defensive INT option in that line up.

Darcy for Cox - I mentioned Cox/Tabs/Ape/Darcy to fight it out for that fwd/ruck spot. Don’t really mind which one. Whoever is in form. Cox for mine showed the most promise, especially as a first year player. Tabs next in line. Darcy might be able to play the roll, but is basically a specialist ruck at the moment waiting for a Sandi injury.

Basically, we struggle to get I-50s, so when we do, we need to lock it in. Our talls are mostly slow and not agile or capable of applying pressure at ground level (Darcy, Tabs, Ape) so I would play mid/small forwards instead. Maybe a more attacking back six and better midfield structures creates more I-50s, but until that’s proven, I’ll assume we still average about 45 per game - which was one of, if not the worst in the league. So on the rare occasion it goes forward, we can’t afford for it to be rebounded so easily.

There’s obviously a few curve balls in there which I actually wouldn’t mind seeing. Also, I would expect Johnson, Spurr and Ballantyne to be in the round 1 team if fit. Above is just the 22 I think.

I can’t see A.Pearce making much of an impact early given how long he was out of action for. Cox was an AA defender so I’d like to see what he has down back, could become Ben Reid lite but with out the injuries. Hughes starts on the bench and could rotate through defensively, giving Blakey some spurts on the ball.

Brayshaw and Cerra have to play round 1, need to get as many games into them as possible and from all reports they’re afl ready anyway so why not. I expect them to play majority of their minutes forward plus some time on ball.

A big question for 2018 is, does Sandi and Darcy play in the same team? If they do, will need another runnner to make up for the lack of pace. If not Tabs should get his 50th-odd second chance replacing Sandi or Darcy which could allow for maybe a Kersten or Ballantyne making Freo better on the spread/lead.

I threw Mundy forward because I reckon he’d be a great target for our mids, has the height and leads well plus being a mid, can play the ground ball too if needed. Would also give decent leadership to some of the younger blokes as they rotate through the forward line.

Now, who have I forgotten???......

Tabs needs to be given a proper run this year. Also don't want to play two rucks but Darcy needs to play and Sandi can't be dropped. Cox very stiff and would come in for the superfluous ruck if I changed it.

Best 22. Without Bennell and allowing for what looked good at training on Monday just a bit. Logue to be the lockdown defender and play on smalls, with Hughes to play on third tall. Cox to come in and play as a defender if Alex Pearce is not ready.

No chance Sandy misses out. Looks in career best shape.

There’s getting to be quite a bit of consensus now. I would personally like Langdon to get an opportunity before Crowden. His extra tank will be handy too.

Yeah, and Crowden keeps developing while Langdon feels some pressure.

Hopefully we get good pressure up forward from Apeness, Cox and Dixon too.

Prefer Crowden for the kicking. For high half forwards/mids we want quality i50 delivery IMO. If there rotation is closer to goal I don't mind it but Ed tends to spend a lot of time upfield when he plays.

I'd have Ed pretty much 2nd next pick after Cox.

Darcy can come in when Sandi needs a rest, ideally each will play 11 games this year. If we want to be competitive this year we can't have both in our 22.

I am not the biggest fan of Taberner, and I believe\hope Dixon will be a better player in 3 or 4 years but I doubt he is ready now. Who ever has the best NAB cup should start round 1.

Players like Ballas, Johnson, Spurr will all be in the side for periods. I would like us to play these players when the younger players need a rest to keep them fresh for the season.
