2018 Best 22

I can definitely see some selection headaches brewing - when some new and returning faces come through for JLT2 I'll have another shot at this. We have a lot of competition coming through for the middle and back side of the ground - wonder if bar Fyfe / Mundy we should try and trial some class in the forward line opposed to playing 3 small forwards.

best 22 with all new and improved Banfield (yes, i do make rash decisions after 1 pre season game....and still have faith in bennell. )
Logue hamling hughes
wilson pearce ryan
hill blackley hill
banfied taberner Bennell
mccarthy cox matera

Ruck Darcy Fyfe Neale.

Int: Brayshaw, Cerra, Crowden, Mundy.

Let's back in the youth. No space for ballas, Jonno, Sherro, Sutto and Danyle.
Sandilands gone? Say it ain't so....

I thought we played better without him. His marking is a positive, his tap didn’t give us dominance in the midfield.

We looked good with Meek out there laying tackles and following up at clearances which is where Sandi struggles.

Personally think he is a poison challice. His stats look good but whether this stats translate positively for a team???

Darcy for me will take the mantle by mid season

My thinking is that we will probably (hopefully) be back around to the top 4 in a couple of years - not sure if he'll be around then......so may as well start looking to the future now.
I really don't want Darcy playing a full time AFL season though, and Meek showed promise, but not the capability to play AFL just yet. All positive signs.

After that game, AP's name is being penned in. Especially when the competition is an old Johnson.

Hughes Hamling Logue
Wilson AP Ryan
B Hill Fyfe S Hill
Walters McCarthy Tucker
Matera Taberner Cox

Sandi, Neale, Blakely

Brayshaw, Langdon, Mundy, Cerra

I don't see Banfield having some decent impact in the second half of a JLT game as anything other than encouraging. It doesn't elevate him to best 22, but it may get him another JLT game.

That game left me thinking we need more midfield support, especially grunt. Blakely is how I would do that, with Hughes in the backline. Fyfe/Mundy forward more. Gee it is going to be exciting when Brayshaw and Cerra are up to speed.

Fingers crossed Bennell some how miraculously returns...

Hughes Hamling Logue
Wilson Pearce Ryan
B.Hill Fyfe S.Hill
Walters McCarthy Brayshaw
Matera Taberner Bennell

Sandi, Neale, Blakely,

Darcy, Banfield, Cerra, Langdon

Emg: Giro, Tucker, Mundy

Not an overly serious best 22, lots of shiny new toys in the box and I don't really believe Mundy will be fit and an emergency anytime this year. Still the OP said for the first final and if this was the named team then it's probably been a pretty fun year already.

And with all respect to Danyle there's no need to initial Pearce any more.

Ryan A Pearce Hughes
Wilson Hamling Blakely
Hill Neale Hill
Brayshaw Tabs Walters
Matera McCarthy Darcey

Rucks: Sandi Fyfe Mundy
Int: Logue Banfield Cerra Crowden

This is my 22. It may lack some experience however if the more senior players aren't performing during JLT then they can step aside for youth.

FB: Hughes Hamling Logue
HB: Ryan A Pearce Wilson
C: S Hill Mundy B Hill
HF: Walters Fyfe Tucker
FF: Matera Taberner Crowden

R: Sandilands Neale Blakely

I: Cox Cerra Brayshaw Darcy.

- McCarthy needs to sort his shit out imo.
- Don't like playing two ruckmen.
- Bennell would make a huge difference.

Banfield effectively played as the sub. Injected late in the game and provided good run. Really liked what he did. Hope he gets an extended run in JLT2.

I think it’s time for Tommy Gun to step aside. The Bailey Banfield “BB Gun” is here!

Unfortunately Tommy has been stepping aside for years....just a good runner with good skills but placed under any physical pressure and he goes to water. Sorry Tom, you need a massive look in the mirror and decide if you really want to be an afl player. He is almost the polar opposite to Brady Gray, but I know who I’d rather in my team.

I actually like Sheridan running through the wing / half forward area, as he has a bit of pace and seems to hit some good targets in the forward line. He is just hopelessly soft as a defender and I think he is mentally scarred from the Hawthorn final a few years ago.

Not suggesting he would be first picked, but maybe he could be good depth as an outside runner?

One interesting thing from the weekend games was that Logue, Hughes, Crowden and Cerra pushed their case for a game without playing in the main JLT game. For mine Johnson looked slow when matched up on McGovern (increasing the chances of Logue coming into the team) while Hughes speed in the back half would have been very handy. Cerra and Crowden having performances against Perth that were described by most as being one touch players in the game emphasises their value over Grey, Ballantyne, Sheridan and Sutcliffe. More youth in the team seems very possible at the moment.

Can you imagine what Grey, Ballantyne etc ,etc would have done to that second rate Perth side. I think that the form shown in that WAFL game needs to be seen in the right context.

Maybe so but if they struggle during the JLT to get a kick then they shouldn't be in the team. You reward current form not past form.

Brad Hill had 6 touches, Alex Pearce had 8, Darcy Tucker had 8, Ballas had 7 and Matera 6. They all had bad games, does not mean some or all of them won't be in our best 22 this year.

Don't understand why people (not directed at you JMT) are wanting to burn coaches and players after one pre-season game - it's a bloody long season and players' form will wax and wane - that's why we want to try as many as possible in these three games (and in the WAFL). That way we know who is ready to come in if we get injuries or need to drop someone on form. We might bring Cerra and Crowden in next week and they get 4 touches each, doesn't mean they are spuds, just means they're probably not first choice best 22 players. I reckon our 22 at the end of the year will be vastly different to our round 1 team.

I know he's aging and we have Darcy in the wings. But the Big fella is in fantastic Nick. Sandilands is way to good to leave out and he has been wonderful for this club. The way he was playing yesterday, AA year this year for sure. So bloody strong
