2018 Best 22

I think the best 22 will sort itself out, and the older players won't be around for our next tilt, so why not just play
them at home, rest, part of a rotation plan.
If we really want a rapid rise in the future, I don't see how else we can fast track the development.
As for the others that haven't come on as expected, playing for Peel, depth.
If we can win ten games this year, without the massive thrashings, and develop players I will be happy.

Can McCarthy do anything for the team than receive a few marks on a long lead. ATM he's Mayne without any defensive pressure.

Tucker? does he have the footy smarts to make it?

Langdon does he have the skills to make it?

Is Logue fit and ready to play?

Cox want it enough?

Ryan- Hamling - ???
Wilson - A Pearce - Blakely
S Hill - ?? - B Hill
Walters - ??? - McCarthy
Matera - Tabs - Mundy

Sandi - Fyfe - Neale

Banfield* - Brayshaw* - ?? - ??

If I'm being honest I'm not very optimistic going into round 1 after the last couple of performances against weak teams. This week though will be a true indicator of where we are at though, hopefully don't get blown off the park from a team that won't make the 8.

A grade

Fyfe Sandi Neale Walters

B grade

Hamling SHill BHill Mundy Blakely Wilson Ryan* AP*

Our team is a few injuries away from disaster again and lacks some serious depth. I'm hopeful that Tucker, Cmac, Darcy, Bennell, Brayshaw, Cerra, Logue can show something but I think it's doubtful these players will help us rise up the ladder this year.

Should be an interesting JLT game this weekend.A few selections queries should be cleared up.

The make up of our round one back & front six is pretty up in the air at the moment.

I'm guessing our round one team will be : Wilson Hamling Jonno
Blakely AP Ryan
SHill Neale BHill
Banfield McCarthy Walters
Matera Tabs Brayshaw

Sandi Fyfe Mundy

Hughes Tucker Langdon Ballas

You have got Brayshaw twice, I would suggest you might need a versatile type player with a bit of height like Cox or Hughes.

C. B Hill - Neale - S Hill
HF. Bennell - McCarthy - Walters
FF. Mundy - Tabs - Matera
R. Sandilands - Fyfe - Blakely
I/C. Brayshaw - Banfield - Langdon - Tucker

EMG: Darcy - Cox - Spurr

My preferred B22 for what it’s worth, no room for D Pearce, Spurr, Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Ballantyne, and Johnson (who I think has been a champion but needs to make room for the younger guys) which is ideal. The defence is extremely young and may probably need a veteran to help with structure, Spurr or Johnson depending on height needs. Cox was awesome last year but I think still needs time to develop to the pace of the game through the WAFL, he can take a grab but has been very slow when getting the ball during play. 2 rucks are too much for the modern game so to begin with Sandi trials as the one ruckman, Darcy to get a shot during the season. Hopefully Bennell can finally make his mark and cement a spot as a senior AFL player.

Spurr Hamling Johnson
Ryan A. Pearce Wilson
Hill Brayshaw Hill
Walters Mundy Matera
Ballantyne Taberner McCarthy
Sandilands Neale Fyfe
D. Pearce Sutcliffe Tucker Banfield

Good to see more Ballas appearing in people’s teams. Write him off at your peril
I love him. He has just looked like on old blue heeler the last few years. Not the snarling little jack Russel that cant stay still or shut up. The 1 we loved and everyone else hated

Round 1 I expect will look like this....

Spurr Hamling Johnson
Ryan A. Pearce Wilson
Hill Brayshaw Hill
Walters Mundy Matera
Ballantyne Taberner McCarthy
Sandilands Neale Fyfe
D. Pearce Sutcliffe Tucker Banfield

Blakely? There's also Langdon that I would hope the coaches have ahead of the usual headaches.

Round 1 side I think will be selected.
Spur Hamling Johnson
Ryan AP Wilson
Hill Fyfe Hill
McCarthy Mundy Walters.
Ballas Tabs Matera.

Ruck Sandi Neale Blakely.

Interchange. Tucker, Brayshaw, Banfield, D Pearce.

Best 22 by round 15

Hughes Hamling Logue
Ryan AP Wilson.
Hill Fyfe Hill
Bennell Mundy Walters.
Banfield Tabs McCarthy.

Ruck Darcy Neale Blakely.

Int: Brayshaw, , Tucker, Cerra, Crowden.

With the exception of Mundy and Steve Hill, that's a pretty young side ladies and gentlemen.

People may not know that with Sandilands we were 6-4 and 2-10 without him last year.

Skin deep analysis. Drill into it just a touch deeper and you'll find that many of the losses without him we were without other important players too, and the wins with him were our strongest teams for the season early before injuries hit hardest.

Both the Hill's will miss round 1 IMO.

The likely round 1 side -

Ryan Hamling Johnson
Blakely A. Pearce Wilson
Langdon Mundy Tucker
Walters Kersten Matera
Ballantyne Taberner McCarthy

Ruck - Sandilands Neale Fyfe

Int - Sutcliffe Banfield Spurr Brayshaw

Emergencies - D Pearce Darcy Cerra

That line up will beat Port by 2 goals then the Hill's will come in for Sutcliffe and Langdon.

Pretty happy with what Tucker and Langdon brought in the JLT. Made sure that their names were right at the forefront of the coach's thinking of the Hills aren't ready.

Firstly I doubt this team will ever get on the park and i understand that, just good to have a reference point to compare our best, to what we pick on a week to week basis.

For that last spot on the Bench i would like to see Darcy as he has shown an ability up forward (albeit at Peel) and without Tabs deep forward we tend to let the opposition transition out of d50 far to easily (as McCarthy/Kersten arent competitive in the air. However depending on who we play then either of: Cerra, Langdon, Hughes or Peels form players, I would be fine with. I've mainly put Kersten because he adds a bit of height however i would prefer a genuine contested marking player (i.e. Darcy/Apeness).

Also based on JLT 2, the coaches comments and the fact that he has performed at a high level in the past means i will give Ballas an honest 10 rounds to show us he can still play solid footy. HOWEVER I think the emergence of Banfield along with a return from Bennel (or form form Langdon/Switkowski at Peel) plus Matera coming to the club, could potentially mean we might not even need 'another' small forward in the Lineup and we might benefit more from a Kersten or Darcy.

For Round 1, I don't expect to see Bennell, Logue, Hughes or Darcy (based on coaches comments). The replacements i would go with are Johnson for Logue, Kersten for Bennell and Langdon last on the Bench.

Johnson Pearce Blakely
Ryan Hamling Wilson
Hill Mundy Hill
Walters McCarthy Kersten
Ballantyne Taberner Matera

Sandilands - Fyfe - Neale

Brayshaw - Banfield - Tucker - Langdon

Getting harder and harder to pick it. I haven't had Langdon in but he really impressed yesterday. Not the greatest kick but gee he goes hard and can run. Adds a real liveliness to things.
If Ballantyne can turn back the clock like yesterday he stays (till he inevitably goes down with a lower leg injury at some point - unless the Pilates has sorted him out).
The Hill's and Bennell pick themselves if all up and about which is 3 you have to take out.
Cerra looks way too good for WAFL and you can never have too many with his kind of class.
I think McCarthy and Kirsten are borderline but both showed enough yesterday that they are becoming very handy on the ground. Can did some really nice work in tight and he's such a smart player. Once his confidence returns fully he'll show his worth.
Interesting times.

Agree completely. 24 played yesterday, Meek an obvious out so still 1 to drop. How do you squeeze Cerra, Hill, Hill, Bennell, Logue, Hughes, Darcy into that side?

I think Langdon would be feeling pretty hard done by if he finds himself playing for Peel come Round 1, he’s played and trained very well during this off season, he’s a lock for the game against Port.

Would be hard to drop many after yesterday’s performance, D Pearce was decent but would still say he was one of our bottom 3, one too many turnovers as usual. Ballantyne proved his worth and was awesome, I’m hoping he can keep the form during the season, and Johnno/Spurr are good leaders for the young defence.

If the Hills are both fit and firing, from the team who played the Eagles I’d go with:

Out: DPearce and Sutcliffe.
In: Hill and Hill.

Bennell, Hughes, Cerra, Logue, Cox, Darcy to work their way in to the team while Swita, Crowden, North, Grey to knock the door down.

I think some of these teams are perhaps a bit too tall. Not sure we can play Sandi + three tall backs + three tall forwards. I'd be much more confident of us copying the Richmond mold than Adelaide.
