I didn't realise we were still doing this. I had sent my picks through to Snoop Dog. In any case, I got the guy I had top of my order Port Adelaide Academy prospect Martin Frederick.

88 - Collingwood - Martin Frederick
If I want a guy who can provide run and dash from defence there is no better in this draft class than Martin Frederick. Absolutely lit it up for SA with that sheer acceleration with which he takes on the game. He's a linebreaker with elite speed, agility and evasiveness using it in game as well as any outside of perhaps Rankine. I'm also a fan of his kicking with some of his low bullet kicks a highlight.

Overall Frederick isn't a pressing need but he was the standout value choice.

My other consideration was Atu Bosenavulagi, but given he's still here and Collingwood have priority to him as an academy prospect, if this was to extend to a rookie draft, I'd take him there as that ideal long term pressure forward who wins the ground balls as well as any small forward in this draft class.

Pick 89. West Coast. Noah Answerth . 182cm 82 kg. Oakleigh Chargers. Defender / Midfielder.

I will admit that I am a bit of a sucker for an underdog and after having his dreams of being drafted shattered last year and in such adversity have the balls to have fought his way back as a overage kid to play for Vic Metro and once again put his name up for Draft Consideration is just a great story.

Answerth broke his back ( fractured L1 vertebra) early last season and that put paid to him playing in 2017 and also dented his draft prospects.
He was able to come back again this year as a 19 year old and not only play for, but Captain the Chargers.

Thats the background :

So why am I picking him ? He is scrapper who fights hard for the ball in close at the coal face.
He spent time in the midfield for Vic Metro and did well so its not a question of IF the dashing backman can play in the midfield because he already has.
Answerth has firstly, both an inside and an outside game and secondly his main point of difference is his leg speed ( two attributes than I rate highly )

He is a bit of a dasher who's run and carry on the outside is better than most. His disposal at times could be a little crisper but I tend to cut inside mids a but more slack as they do most of the work in very confined spaces.
I like the kids work ethic and his fierce attack on the ball.
At pick 89 I am happy to role the dice as I think he has a lot of upside.

Any kid who fights back from the disappointment and adversity that he has faced shows courage, determination and perseverance now they the are sort of character traits that I like young aspiring players to have.

Bishop your up to close the show out.

This is usually where I pick an unknown South Australian. But not this time. Firstly I think Hayden Sampson should have been picked, he’s better than some of the fringe Victorians who have been selected. And I strongly considered Martin Frederick, but he was only the second best available.

Pick 87 Sydney - Caleb Graham (194cm, 84kg from Gold Coast Academy)

Talented and versatile big man, best played down back. Not too many key defenders I’d take ahead of him and think he should go much earlier.
Sampson was a strong consideration instead of Reid.

Jed Hill - Small forward/midfielder from the GWV Rebels. Good above his head, quick and dangerous anywhere near goals. One to keep an eye on as the year progresses especially since his move into the midfield the last few weeks.

Charlie Wilson>>>>>Jed Hill

Irving Mosquito - Gippsland Power small lively pressure forward, prides himself on his pressure acts, averages 5 tackles and 1.5 goals a game, has some x-factor about him, looks likely to be taken late in the draft by the Hawks as he is an NGA listed aligned youngster, originally from W.A. came over to Victoria for schooling and an opportunity to get his name out there for an AFL opportunity, missed the championships through injury which kept him out of the spotlight which was a shame as Vic Country couldve used a lively forward in these champs.

Cody Leggett. Perth. 188 cm 93 kg and still only 22.

Plug in ready to go.
Put together a couple of really good seasons at WAFL level , utility that can play in the midfield.
Fellow punters it is worth looking up his stats on the WAFL site and tracking his progress in the remainder of the season.
He is my WAFL smokie.

Pick 86 – Port Adelaide
Louis Miller East Perth, WA
187 cm, 82 kg

Over the summer, we heard Adam Gilchrist lauding the Scotch College Cricket Academy. The football academy used to be even better in the 60’s and 70’s with the likes of Mal Brown, Ross Glendinning and Robert Wiley as graduates. The college has had a dry spell but is getting better in football now and their latest graduate is Louis Miller.

Miller is a tough and skilled playing most of his colts and carnival football off the half back flank. If you want a player comparison, think of a mix of Brad Sheppard for one on one contests and Hamish Hartlet with ball in hand. Miller made it into the state U18 team as a bottom age player in 2017 and showed he warranted selection but he had the benefit of Naughton and Taylor making his role easier. I went back to my carnival notes from 2017 and I had a number of ticks for things he had done well and highlighted him then as someone to watch for the following year. In 2018, WA were not blessed with tall defenders and Miller often found himself playing taller and did a good job shutting down some dangerous forwards. He and Clark held together an under sieged WA defence for much of the carnival and in many ways the two of them kept them in the games without blow out scores.

There are 2 attributes that Miller has consistently shown that makes me believe he will make it in AFL. He reads the play very well. So much is made of the modern game needing to intercept and play team defence and he does this particularly well, demonstrating ability to get to position, ability to use his body and ability to mark overhead. The second key attribute is the ability to look for and find targets when starting the attack from the half back line. Miller has very tidy skills by hand and foot but most importantly he reads the options downfield and then has the time and skills to deliver. He has shown his willingness to go direct through the middle and judging when to go wide and work the outside lines.

He has decent pace, strong upper body meaning he can lay and break tackles and he may well make it as a big bodied midfielder. At this pick in the draft, I believe he is great value and will possibly be ready to play in 2019 or at least by 2020.

Yes ..... That was him last season its on youtube a 92 meter goal , just google youtube Cody Leggett WAFL.

But to write him up just on that one kick would be folly, more to the point check out his WAFL stats the guy is a tackling machine.

As a VFL man through and through, my one to watch has to be Callan Wellings. His influence in the VFL as an undrafted 19 year old is the best I've seen, bar none. His last 3 weeks have been quieter than usual however he's still averaging 19 disposals this year and a tad over a goal a game. I wouldn't pick him for Melbourne, not the right type, but if he goes undrafted there's something seriously wrong.
