Our game is unique and big enough (in this country) to come up with our own ideas. An entire night to focus on number one picks is way too much razzle dazzle.

The AFL want to make the draft a BIG thing. But don't know how to do it.

Lots of differences to the USA

• Scale - 350 mil to 25 million people
• Number of teams
• How important an individual is to the team's success
• And really importantly that their draftees are usually College athletes and ours are kids.

The AFL mistake duration for importance, and try to create excitement by creating a false experience. It doesn't work.

I was interested that we are likely to have 38 on the list this year, instead of 40 (Talking Tigers - Blair)

We obviously have some issues that we are trying to manage in 2018. We lost a heap of mature(ish) players, and their salary and presence. We are going into 2019 2 players down.

From a distance with no inside knowledge it seems to me that we are:

• opening up space for our kids to play firsts and develop faster than if they have Miles etc in front of them
• managing our salary cap (either we are tight now, or we are creating space for 2019 or 2020, or both)
• looking ahead to a period when we might have more picks and/or a better pool of players to pick from

One way or another we seem to be trying to build for the future whilst still being on top. I like it, but am confused a bit by what the club is doing.

It is very interesting indeed, it will become clearer after the Rookie Draft. If the idea is to have space for our kids to get games i like it very much, it's the only way to develope them properly & any way to accelerate thier development is a great idea.

Club just went for B2B this year and kept all the VFL players for back-up...
We missed...
So the Club is doing a clean out of the VFL and hoping TLynch is the magic bullet for another shot at the Flag and so are doing a mini rebuild in the background...
We still have picks...
We still have some up and coming young players...

They are indeed all fringe players, but can you remember a group of AFL-level players being let go? It's a step up on Arnot, Dea, McDonough and Gordon.

I hope you're right about Towner. Chol - he has exciting attributes, but might be coming from too far back, IMO. Might be time to try someone else.

Yeah credit is due to our improved recruiting & list management over the last few years. I didn't mind Conca and Lloyd. I thought they were the genuine depth on our list. CEllis wasn't a success and I hope we stick with drafting mids who are ready to go. I find it funny that the clubs are stuck with having to pay out players like Griffiths who has chosen to retire. Anyhow the upside of that is important salary cap space becomes available. And we will need it to resign a number of players at the end of 2019 Vlas, Astbury, Rioli & Lambert , Ellis.

Included in that group is Gippsland Power's rangy midfielder Xavier Duursma, who now shapes as a top-20 smokey, and small forward/midfielder Ned McHenry, who has been linked to the Tigers, Crows and Melbourne.

The Crows have four selections in the first 21 picks (No.8, 13, 16 and 21) and could also look to bolster their ruck stocks, with GWS academy prospect Kieren Briggs tipped to attract an early bid.

Rivals believe the Giants could look to trade up in the draft from their current position at No.19 to ensure they don't need to use their third top-20 pick to match a bid on the bullocking big man and instead match a bid with later picks.

Clubs see St Kilda's pick No.4 as shaping the top group of selections. Sam Walsh, Jack Lukosius and Izak Rankine are widely tipped to be the first three players picked, because even if Carlton springs a surprise and grabs Lukosius at No.1, Gold Coast would follow by taking Walsh and then likely Rankine at No.2 and 3.

The Saints are considering a group of players for their choice, with key forward Max King and midfielder Bailey Smith seen as the most likely candidates.

Jye Caldwell, Ben King, Connor Rozee and Bailey Smith are in the next group of likely selections, with the Bulldogs in a strong position to take Smith at No.7 should he get past the Saints' choice.

That's almost like being able to think of two things at once and to strategically manage both the short term and long term. Crazy talk!!!

We should follow Geelong and focus on tomorrow at the expense of the future. Hasn't failed them so far

It's a midfield draft. We'll be taking a midfielder with our first pick and the way it's shaping almost all clubs are walking with a top quality player in the top 20.

From the perspective of how we play getting more high quality small forwards with outstanding repeat sprint abilities makes perfect sense. The top end of that type often slide a bit compared to mids on a talent for talent basis. Our game style can handle many things but injuries to a few of our small forwards it cannot. So I would understand why we might go for an outstanding small forward.

Having said that … I hope we get one of the quality good sized mids this year. We need them.
