This is so hard to disagree with after watching his highlights. I mean, I know everyone looks good in highlights but how this kid isn't been talked about as one of the best inside mids is a head scratcher. Must be more to it.

I think Ely just suits RFC in terms of the role he could bring.
I will be brutally honest, I am not the biggest fan of Clayton Oliver even though I was pumping up his tyres pre-draft before Melbourne grabbed him early in a great late run up the draft ratings. He is in the contest a lot, gets a lot of ball, makes a lot of handballs but boy can he butcher it to and break up some momentum and forward transition to for Melbourne.
In the vision from Ely he is very raw, he has had limited exposure to against better opposition and bigger more experienced opposition. There is a lack of polish, I think thats obvious, the disposal is a little iffy and the style a little slapstick and he is a bigger body against smaller types in the kids. So is their a limiter on his upside? Possibly. But I think for RFC we are looking for someone with his size to play that in your face chaotic style to complement what we already have. We need someone at the coalface that, if nothing else, is a total pain in the arse inside in the faces of the opposition giving Cotch and Dusty a chop out and something else to think about that at least seems to be strong as an extractor. So I think for RFC, Ely adds more value than he possibly could for other teams, and also possibly in 2019, because with the players like Dusty and Cotch and others we already have the polish and skill set to complement someone like Ely. Its not hard to see why Ely has a range of 20-50 in the draft machine, however in terms of roles and what RFC lacks that needs to be rectified, Ely probably fits the bill. I really want to see how our mids go, including Cotch and Dusty in the guts, with a guy that is in the face of the opposition driving them mad with aggression like Ely!!! I would like to see how Prestia goes when someone like Ely is in the face of the opposition attempting to extract the ball and dish it out!!! Some might argue Ely is chopped liver but we need someone inside thats prepared to get dirty and in the face of the opposition with a bit of size and aggression winning, or at least matching in the hardball department!!! This is not just about tackling, its about presence in the contest to improve our clearance work!!
Now I have had a look at some of the vision of some of these players another I did not mind the look of was forward/ruck Williams in the 30-60 range. But then I looked at some of the phantoms and noticed some of the phantoms had him higher even up to 15 which quelled my interest a little from a value perspective because these choices are speculative in the armchair. Anyway I liked his movement and physical attributes for a big guy but I would only use a later pick on him.
Then there are others like Stocker getting talked up as slipping to our first pick. Could happen because I think he looks a little one paced compared to other options which might be why he slides versus other options. Then there are other players like RCD, Halloran and Bytel(with the injuries) and it really becomes a question of where they fall.

Yep, pretty underwhelming and not a need. We’re in a unique position where there’s going to be a guy with our needs at our late 1st rounder. RCD, Stocker, Ely Smith, Valente etc. we can’t overlook one of these for a forward flanker
My Dad just went to a legend's member draft function with some coaches and recruiting staff.
He isn't home yet but my brother picked him up from the station to drop him at the nearby pub and got a little tidbit:
We are apparently looking at trading #17 for a couple of picks in the 20s.

When Blair Hartley was interviewed on the podcast he said in preparation for live trading he and a few other list management staff went over to the states and spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants.
When i heard that, the first thing i thought of was that the Ravens are notorious for trading back in the first round for more picks. Actually in last year's draft they traded back TWICE. They originally held pick 16, then traded back to pick 22 then again to pick 25.

I don't think there's any chance of RCD being available at our pick and the club probably know this - if he slid to us, I'm sure that could change our plans - but I wouldn't hold my breath.
As much as we're all convinced that we need young inside mids the club may not agree. This could be our plan over the next few drafts.
Caddy will most likely be playing more midfield with Lynch coming into the forward line, Caddy will still go forward obviously, but possibly less.
Higgins will play more TOG midfield too and I expect Dusty will also as he was obviously playing injured this year.
Don't think our midfield lacks as much depth as we think and a draftee wouldn't solve our alleged issues.
Add those 3 to Cotchin, Prestia, Titch, Lambert, Graham and we have 8 potential clearance players. That's not even considering if we take a mature age player like Mitch Grigg or Michael Gibbons.

#27 Curtis Taylor (Calder Cannons/Vic Metro)
The X-factor from the Cannons has had an up-and-down year, which is what is the question mark hanging over him, but no-one could dispute his best is as good as anyone’s in the draft. He struggled for consistency, but when he was “on” he was really on, and could turn a game with a massive quarter of multiple goals. He stood up to be an important player at times through the championships, and looms as one of those players where clubs will be eyeing off each other to see who grabs him first. Taylor has great upside that could result in a genius pick down the track if he drifts to the second round as expected.
Sounds like a Ben Lennon replacement.
He is a 186cm and 79kg medium sized forward/midfielder.
