How does oreilly have a pathway to freo, he was classified as father son.
There have been a couple of players this year who have been through a draft before and have therefore become eligible to join clubs without going through the draft again, and gone immediately to the Rookie List.

That’s how the new rule works... so door is open for him.
This is currently the case but he wouldn’t be eligible until post 2019 draft. That’s if the supplementary preseason draft process between Dec and Mar remains as it is.

I quite like the process but I believe it should be limited to previously afl listed players that have been delisted and also retired players (provided they have sat out a year). Those in line to be picked up on 01/12 such as Mav Weller (currently delisted) and the likes of Clarke/Wagner/Brooksby (recently delisted). However to be able to have the likes of Tom Lewis and Dillon O’Reilly commit to a team and withdraw their names from the draft isn’t right in my opinion. It would have taken the likes of Tim Kelly and Brett Bewley etc our of the main draft.

Got to love draft time. Every team (especially us) just drafted a bunch of future AA's and a brownlow or two.
So to summarise...

Sturt - the next Fyfe
Valente - the next Jordan Lewis
Shultz - better than Ballantyne
Bewley - a tougher Gaff with a longer kick
Watson - the next Luke Hodge
Carter - the next Jason Johannisen

Have I got all that right?

Spot on

I agree, but if that is the rules then we should exploit that as much as possible.

We might only get one more chance at it before the AFL slams that door shut.

Yep agreed.

Sumich on 6PR said that Sydney Stack is on his way to Richmond for a 2-week trial for a Rookie spot they have vacant.

I thought they were picking Mav Weller. But ole salty Sumich is adamant Richmond, if Stack shows improved work ethic he will be drafted to their Rookie list next month.

So looks like I was wrong. If a spot opens up (ie retirement or worse we have to delist someone) we could potentially still draft an O’Reilly or Tom Lewis to our rookie list between Dec and Mar.

Interested whether any wafl watchers out there rated Tobe Watson as better than O’Reilly. If Geelong saw fit to give Brownless a go with a pick in the 70s I reckon we could have taken a punt on O’Reilly with a rookie pick. Anyway, Watson is ours now so let’s see how he goes.
If he turns out like J McGovern and the eagles get him someone needs a good spanking.

can someone has a direct link to the new rule?

my understanding it's only for players who has played on an AFL list before and not un-drafted players.

also, if that is the case that a player like Stack can be rookied in the pre-season, do they onto the A listed or B listed?

Richmond currently have opnly 42 players on the list. Weller will fill one spot. Will that allow them to sign Stack?

I don't like the rookie draft straight after the main draft. There used to be a period where you could trial players. Finalising lists after JLT 1 or 2 would allow a bunch of players the opportunity to do AFL preseasons. Of course there should we special train on contracts (part of soft cap) and if they missed it would give them a head start for lower leagues. Give clubs a pool they know for midseason draft too.

Rookie draft has been and gone, not sure Stack can go on a rookie list now..

As he doesn’t qualify like delisted free agent Weller does.

The only draft coming up is the preseason draft, and that’s not for rookies, and those selected go onto the main list.

I could be wrong, but I think Sumich has slipped on a slippery piece of lettuce and got a few things mixed up..

Players can be added to a rookie list from December 1st to March as long as they qualify as having been through a draft already. That's why there are clubs with less than the required 44 players on their list right now.

Is this the new rule coming into effect... bit strange as I would of thought it was for previously undrafted, not the draft just finished.. very strange and confusing

Unless someone resigns or gets delisted then Freo have no spaces available, makes our last couple of picks seem a bit strange!

Pretty sure the new rule is:

Anyone previously on an afl list can go straight on the rookie list between dec and march without having to nomi8nate for the draft (Unless they are trying to go back to the club they were delisted from then they would having to nominate and go through draft first e.g. we couldn't relist apeness)

Anyone who nominated for the draft and wasn't picked up can automatically go on a clubs rookie list between dec and march (providing the club has the list space)

Anyone who missed out in last years draft(2017) or previous years drafts who didn't nominate for this years draft would not be eligible to be put straight on the rookie list between dec and march.

So to use O'reilly as an example he would have to go through next years draft and be overlooked again for us to be able to put him on the rookie list after the draft next year. If someone were to retire before the season starts we would then be able to put him straight on the rookie list. Any club who has rookie list spots free could put him on their list.

To use Jye bolton as another example - he could go straight on a rookie list without nominating for the draft because he has previously been on an afl list

I think thats how it works anyway

Gotta love the end of draft. Every player you get in i am sure is going to be playing by half way through the season. Hoping ross does not fall back on old ways and gives them all a go.

Good haul wasn’t it?

Sorta like what their saying about Carlton you mean...still on the bottom....so maybe we climb another rung or two. Looking at the list it is good enough to make the eight if they click. Nice in the rocking chair, I'm of that age too;)

For those in the know or at least think they are would Sydney stacks chances of making it be enhanced if he did move interstate or are we dealing with something akin to the Dayle Garlett to hawthorn fiasco and we know how that turned out

He's nowhere near Garlett levels, but yeah, interstate is the best place for him I think.

Dude is a star. If you get him right you'll be laughing.

Can you tell us a bit about what you've seen from him to make you say that?
