Last year we did well in terms of location and 6 day breaks but we got dogged in the strength of our double ups. Depending on which analysis you look at we had somewhere between the hardest and the 4th hardest draw as a result of playing;
x2 WCE (8th regular, 6th finals)
x2 Essendon (7th regular, 8th finals)
x2 Richmond (3rd regular, 1st finals)
x2 Geelong (2nd regular, 3rd finals)
x2 North (15th regular)
I don't think our draw had much impact on our season result and even if it did the better draft pick is possibly better in the long run.

This year we should almost certainly have an easier draw. A double up against a falling WCE will be our only repeat top 6 opponent http://www.afl.com.au/fixture/fixture-explained We will then either have 2 middle six double ups and 2 bottom 6 double ups or 1 middle and 3 bottom.
From the middle 6 ideal opposition would be: Hawthorn and Saint Kilda
From the bottom 6 anyone is fine.

Richmond had the easiest draw in the comp off the back of a bottom 6 2016 in the weakest year this century.

(disclaimer: they also had just about every other bit of luck you could think of)

Other than WCE who are you ideal double ups?

I can see a lot of clubs improving next season and only a few getting worse.

Your list is mirroring my own thoughts however I don't want to play the Hawks twice. That means we have to travel to tas because you know that we won't play them at the G.

I want to double up against Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond just so we can gaurantee MCG games. Would be happy with all 3. Eagles and then probably Geelong for tradition.

Single interstaters I'd like to play Adelaide in Adelaide, Power here. GWS in Sydney, Sydney here and Lions in QLD, Gold Coast here. Challenge the youngers against the better sides at their home turf.

Can't play Richmond or Geelong twice as they're top 6 and WCE are the only top 6 side we can play twice, I don't think playing those teams guarantee MCG games anyway, we get our 2 a year and then they'd have no issues relegating us to Etihad. Not too concerned anyway, the difference in dimension between our home ground and the MCG has decreased significantly and we played the MCG well this year as well.

Double ups;

Top 6 - WC obviously if allowed but if it’s ranked on before the finals then Port for sure.
Mid 6 - Collingwood, wouldn’t complain if it’s Hawks, surely were due to beat them.
Bottom 6 - Carlton, Suns & North.

Ideally we get a big few Vic clubs at the new stadium early in the season. Collingwood, Richmond & Carlton would suit me in our 2nd, 3rd and 4th home games woth a derby our first in Rd 2 if we don’t kick off the season at home.

A good draw (especially early on) and good run with injuries and we might go close to the finals.

I reckon the mid 6 team they’ll give us will be Essendon - top 8 team based at Etihad. The three bottom 6ers will Be Collingwood, Carlton and North. No GC or Brisbane to dine off (mind you we contrived to lose to Brissie this year).

I want the easiest double ups possible. Confidence is king, if you can make the 8 and have a healthy list come season's end you're in with a chance.

West Coast
Bulldogs
North
Gold Coast
Brisbane

Who does everyone want for our 1st game?

Luckily for us our slip back into irrelevance might help us here. We'll probably play the last game on Sunday against one of the other irrelevant teams. Gold Coast, North, Brissy. Starting the year off with a win would be great.

Yeah I want one of the ordinary teams for our first home game. Preferably one of the ones that doesn't travel well. Get the Perth based fans up and about and try and create a "fortress" (until someone good comes to town and we get pantsed).

Don't want either Adelaide or Sydney club early as it won't do our confidence any good (unless we beat them).

Either a guarantee streak starter or a derby, could you imagine the confidence boost from belting west coast on our new home ground

Just thinking that Richmond at the G would be a good game to get first (obviously we can't because Carlton) but off the premiership teams often struggle early and we have a good MCG record against them.

Would do our confidence the world of good knocking off the premiers early.
Worked well this year, kick started our run of 6/7

I reckon it will be something like eagles, port, saints, north, carlton twice

West Coast - Top 6
Essendon - Middle 6
Bulldogs - Middle 6
Carlton - Bottom 6
Collingwood - Bottom 6

They won't give us 3 double ups of teams in this year's bottom 6 like Richmond got this year from 2016's bottom 6.

Also as a selfish person, 6 games in Melbourne to make a potential membership worthwhile would be greatly appreciated.

Aren't Collingwood bottom 6?

Hawks will send us to Tasmania again.
New/returning Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has been talking up the relationship between the Hawks and Tasmania, therefore us playing there next year is my...

More I think about it....

Dead certain if there is one team freo will get twice, it will be North. Lions or the suns will be the other bottom 6 we will get twice.

Considering Each AFL side is entitles to play the one Mandatory game at the MCG each year, It will probably be against the Demons who we also get twice. To round it off... I reckon Port will be the other middle 6 side we will get twice

Gold Coast, which will be funded to the tune of $2.4 million from the Queensland Government for its forced removal from Metricon Stadium until round 11, remain in the box seat to sell a home game to the Dockers in a departure from AFL policy forced by the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

This was in the link above.

Will that mean gold coast will play freo in perth as a gold coast home game.

If thats ends up being the case the suns really are generous club after all.

Wouldn't that be incredible.

Not if Freo lost to Gold coast at Perth .Freo team are pretty strong without the injuries on paper .

So who do we think we will get round 1?

Locked in:
Gold Coast v North Melbourne
Richmond v Carlton

Have been requested:
Collingwood v Melbourne
Essendon v Hawthorn
West Coast v Big Vic club.

If they rotate the Round 1 fixture as normal:
Port v ????
???? v Adelaide

Assuming we play away we could be playing:
Sydney
Port
Saints
Bulldogs
Geelong
GWS
Brisbane (Is the Gabba available or will they be playing away due the Comm games?)

It's a fair chance we will be playing a team chasing finals and the top 4. Hopefully we get one of Bullies, Saints, Lions.

------------------------------------------------

Interestingly I wonder what Big Vic club the Weagles get? Geelong maybe. But I'd be thinking Geelong playing at home, unveiling Ablett to the fans would be pretty big for the AFL. Bullies and Saints are hardly big clubs.
