Agree. Seems like he's just throwing out the 'feel sorry for me' after he didn't put in the required effort. Would love him at the Lions though if he wasn't able to break back into the best 22 and is looking for senior game time... will be a spot there for him.

Nicholls has gone off to the US again like he did last year for 2 weeks - hardly seems conducive to making every post a winner

Looks like we didn't completely clean house of these blokes who love the AFL lifestyle but not wanting to commit to being a professional and doing the extras.

I've already written him off from being on the list next year.

Bit harsh, his partner and their family live there! Can't blame a guy for wanting to spend time with his loved ones over the holidays.

We'll see with Nicholls - career at the cross roads but wouldn't want that to interfere with his social life. Hopefully he will have the opportunity to relocate there full time from 2019 onwards

So, here's a question I've never known the answer to — always had a full work day to contend with, but 2018 has me flush with spare time right now. Can we just turn up somewhere and watch the team train? Or do we need to wait for an officially sanctioned 'open' training?

If so, where would I go, and when do they train?

Boys go back to training on Tuesday , club not good at telling us about training times like other clubs , but I think it would be hard to visit this pre season with comm games prep going on , but if you need a fix the boys are holding a open training session here in palm beach in the 19th in the morning at the pirate park which is next to pbc high school.

Pre-season training for the players and coaches resumes next week.

Personally, I consider myself to be in the best posting shape of my life. I changed a few things over the break, not reading as much rubbish and sticking to a steady diet of insightful comment and opinion. Looking for more sharpness and wit, fewer turnovers. I can't wait for the preseason comments to start.

Geez, your already one of the best posters on this forum so if your planning on stepping your game up you might be too good to stick around on here ;)

Indeed! Sign up early Strop, show Lynchy how its done..
Loyality over free agency will give a big boost for the boys and success will follow..

Greendogg, you still got all your McKenzie Willis stock?

I may have sold off a small portion of my holding based on my lack of patience but hopefully the changing coaching structure and getting re-rookied will set him up for a big year.

Dude if we weren't patient we would have jumped off this reverse band wagon at least 3 years ago! There is a spot there for him, now Saad has sooked his way back to the heartland..
Lucky Tasmanians are made of sterner stuff..
What i would like to see is a stronger, fitter physique because he has got that burst that you just can't teach..
Does he want it enough? I reckon if he has a big preseason and remains injury free, we will know one way or the other in the first month of NEAFL.. he simply has to dominate.
I think he can do it..
Happy new year to Y'all, while im at it..
God I hope this is our year!

This is the best training footage I've seen in our 8 years.
Great seeing the boys being pushed to their limits with running and sprinting drills them being instantly smashed by the coaches in tackling and wrestling drills

As well as being the best training we have seen in years it's also a big step in the right direction for the social media department - being able to overlay that amount of footage while having Micky B provide some quality insight into what it all means was some great work.

I assume the tackling and grappling is designed to build resilience as well as technique, it will be interesting to see if the guys translate it to game time. I think the protection of the player with the ball for a split second allows improved disposal which is something we have always struggled with.

We always get fried with the umpiring so we may as well get fried for hurting the opposition rather than just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The good teams worked that out a long time ago

You just wonder what 'our' year needs to look like - I imagine the bar will be pretty low but an improvement on what we dished up in the Eade years
You know I think Eade gets a lot of unfair criticism on here (not saying from you, OB).. I think Stuey is absolutely the right appointment with Ablett gone and the ratpack gone he can go about making this team His and building from the ground up with a very talented (bit young) but very talented list..Eade is the Coach we had to have in the post McKenna years.. he was the hard nosed experienced guy who cleaned up the joint.. as far as I'm concerned he threw himself on the railway track for the good of the club... getting rid of all the behaviourally challenged stars to the detriment of the bottom line (his win/loss record) add to that the monumental injury list we had while he was here and its not hard too see he was up against it..
He wasn't perfect but he will go down as a meaningful link in our evolution toward our first premiership!

The tackling technique throughout is terrible, the technique by Jack Martin at the 5min45s mark makes me want to weep.
Our inability to effectively tackle other than Lemmens and Swallow is my biggest frustration and now I see why. They don’t know the basic technique of lowering the shoulder and driving the legs.
They should go and get someone like a Trevor Gilmeister or Ryan Simpkins (both GC locals) to do just a one hour session with them and it would be fixed.

If they are bringing in guys to show grappling technique I'd assume they already would be bringing in guys to show tackling technique given that is an actual a skill of the game.

Although based on exposed form maybe they should be bringing in new guys to show tackling technique.

Dew has brought in Scott Steer to conduct the wrestling and grappling sessions.

Scott Steer is a former national judo champion who spent 10 years in the military as a special forces soldier, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

NEW Suns coach Stuart Dew has enlisted the help of an ex-special forces soldier to help Gold Coast wrestle its way to success in 2018.

Gold Coast have put an unprecedented focus on wrestling and grappling during the early stages of pre-season training in a bid to improve their contested work that has previously let them down.

The Suns were ranked 14th in contested possessions in the 2017 season with the young side struggling to offer resistance against physical opponents.

The NRL has had a growing trend of wrestling techniques creep into the game in recent years as teams try to slow down the running of rivals.

It is growing more prevalent in AFL with players pinning arms to stop the opposition from disposing of the ball while the sling tackle came under heavy criticism in 2017.

Dew spent his coaching apprenticeship at the Sydney Swans - a team renowned for their contested work - and he hasn’t wasted any time trying to improve the Suns physical presence.

Dew has brought in Suns’ NEAFL trainer Scott Steer to conduct the wrestling and grappling sessions.

Steer is a former national judo champion who spent 10 years in the military as a special forces soldier, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He has also been doing private wrestling sessions with young tall forward Peter Wright.

Suns midfielder David Swallow – one of Gold Coast’s toughest players – said the team was relishing the opportunity to evolve that side of their game.

“We have done some wrestling before but I think it is going to be much more of a focus this preseason,” Swallow said.

“You look at the best teams and they are all good contested ball sides. Stuey has come out of the Sydney Bloods culture and the way they play their footy is around contested footy and tackling.

“He is definitely going to bring that side of things to us.”

Dew is going to weep when he sees us trying to tackle in the real thing.... or we are all going to stare in disbelief if they actually start to consistently stick tackles, hurt the opposition... and then bow down and praise Dewy as our saviour.
I know practice makes perfect but I’ll believe it when I see it. Been waiting 7 years...
