The dew effect has come on quickly , that manic pressure was a pleasure to watch from us long suffering suns fans . The story of the day was nick Holman , looks as though we have found a player there , his pressure around the packs was immense , and I can’t believe I’m gonna say this but Lemmens was brilliant today , was his best game in a suns jumper . Overall really impressed what we achieved today considering we had about 5 first 22 out as well as Geelong did , good signs.

A bit disappointed with Weller performance look a bit lost out there , i know is too early to judge but against Brisbane Number 1 pick (if he play) in JLT2 there will be no more excuses .

Barring injury Rayner will play

Good to see you guys doing well - hopefully Dew can turn your team around as Fagan has for us

For anyone wondering how the ages and experience stacked up in today's game see attached

(I used players age in years only as of today.)

Some things I noted. Median Age of players both 23.5 So exactly half of both teams under 23.5 and half over 23.5
Geelong still had more players with 100 games exp than the suns. despite lower mean games played.
Lots of first gamers for the Cats v none for the suns, yet average age not as different as you'd think.
In 5 years time Cats are in trouble, as all the main players missing for them (Danger Selwood GAJ Henderson etc) all either will be or very close to retired by then, and as it stands the next gen doesn't look so hot.

If this was a selection trial and you assume May, Swallow and Wright are already picked, which 7 guys would you drop?
Thompson, Lemmens (due to injury), Bowes, Holman, Day, Rosa, Nicholls

That said, I would put the 6 fit guys back out next week, rest maybe a dozen who don't need the hitout and bring in some of the unlucky omissions for a hitout.

Yeah, nah! Lol

Geelong will still be a good team this year , but they rely heavily on Dangerfield and Selwood , and they have just added a 34yo who doesn’t play injured , so good luck with that Geelong.

I don't know that the Cats are necessarily going to be that good. We saw last year how Hawthorn, the Bulldogs and Norf went from Top 8 to also rans because they went from winning the close ones to losing them. I like some of the Cats rookies and developing players, but this is a win-now list that has gone away from its policy of trading/delisting star players once they've slowed down. Gaz is gone but they refuse to acknowledge it, just like they did with his father - what are they gonna do, put Dangerfield AND Ablett in the forward line? The best thing they can do if they are out of finals contention by midseason, is play these young guys and get matches into them, which Eade did last year with the Suns.

Geelong's biggest issue is the same as every list now
Whereas in their Premiership era their bottom 6 were first picks at most other Clubs they now struggle after about selection 10
But they are still good and I'd caution reading anything much from yesterday
I'm picking Ablett to have a miraculous ;) injury free season
As I say- beware the out of contract player in a shoulder sling or moonboot after round 14
This will be the surest sign Lynch is on the move
In the end, after 9 years, all I hope for from these games is hope itself and we at least got that

David Kings comments;

“For me, this is a win for strategy,” King said.

“Let’s be honest, they would’ve had about 200 hours out on the track and we’ve seen a totally different model.

“It’s a system that can not only move the ball out of the back line with fluidity, but real potency.

“Their defensive mechanism is what I think Stuart Dew would be really happy about. This press is in really good order.

“This is awesome for this group to see immediately what this coaching group has been able to do for them.”

I'm pretty sure it's what Eade would have been trying for, the players have to buy in and they didn't

He's pretty well on the money. The Suns defence was very frugal in their own 50 and often the Cat's shots came from low percentage outside 50 bombs. Imagine what it will be like with Steven May?!

When Eade had a healthy list his best backlines were very good, but lacked cohesion. They were either stacked with May, Thompson and Leslie, or else depleted and relying on rookies. I thought we were getting good run out of defence with Saad, Hanley and Harbrow, but they didn't have the cohesion that goes with time practicing and playing together. Hanley especially, was erratic and seemed to negate his team mates. Harbs had a down year, which only got worse after his drink driving offence, while KK had concussion issues. The upside was that plenty of Defensive players got blooded and lots more were recruited (Nutting, Weller, Wigg, Heron).

It all augurs well for Dew's game plan because now if a player gets injured or isn't executing their task, the next player up can step into the roll, unlike last year where things just fell apart.

I don't think we've ever had trouble running OUT of defence
Our biggest issue has been running the other way
For 9 years I've had my head in my hands at every turnover
Yesterday I saw our players sweeping back through the midfield when the opposition had the ball and it was a revelation
If we can carry that into the season proper we will over achieve this season on current expectations

I thought Rischitelli looked really good down back. Hopefully it plays out something like Matt Boyd's move down back later in his career.

If its between Riska and Rosa then Riska has it in spades

I don’t know if it’s just me but Rosa looked slow yesterday , in speed and decision making , I know it happens to all players but we are at pre season , could be a long season for Matt in the Neafl if that it what is to come.

I don't think Matt would have played too many games for us last year if it wasn't for the injury toll
Did well to get a 3 year contract out of us and was really only serviceable at best
