Caruso was very impressive on the Podcast this week with Cal Twomey.

Interestingly he said the club desperately wanted Willie Rioli with the mid 50’s selection in 2016 but got pipped by West Coast.

He said they rated Brent Daniels the best small forward in the 2017 draft and picked Sam Taylor after being shocked he was still on the board even though he wasn’t a perceived need. He said the club tried to package a deal to get two earlier picks to grab the pair but it fell through.

He said they haven’t put much work into the really early picks this year suggesting a trade up is not on the cards and the club is happy with depth everywhere within list so will pick best available and will again look at mature age.

He said whilst they have been impressed with Briggs development they are no certainty to select him given they have Flynn developing and at 199cms there are some concerns over his height at next level.

Throughout the chat he mentioned Sam Walsh, King Bros, Smith and Izak Rankine when talking about benchmark players (didn’t mention Lukosious) indicating where his mind is at perhaps with the best players available.

Jungle drums down beating here that St Kilda are planning to offer Shiel a godfather style multi year multi million dollar deal. He has resisted all overtures previously, but with him becoming a free agent next year what would happen if he did get a Tom Scully type offer?? Saints are resigned to Kelly either staying with us or going to North when he comes out of contract so making the big play for Dyl as he fits the age demographic and has the specs they need.

If he was offered 6mil over 5 years he would be stupid to knock it back.

Need those academies to start churning them out.
Our stars are going to get Grandfather deals over the next few years and we really cant blame them for taking it considering how long these guys have stuck around loyally.
We will keep some but I cant see all of them staying.

But for the love of god let's not get screwed on the trades.

We arent K-mart.

If he did go I’d prefer it was this year as we get two first rounders for him in a strong draft.

I’d prefer that too. Just saying if he did end up going...
I dont think shiel will leave end of this year specifically after he said there was no chance of that happening a few weeks ago. He has always looked to be a player who sticks by his words.

That being said, he was one I suggested on the trading table a few months ago and i just wanted to know what you would ask from st. Kilda if he hypothetically was requesting a trade back home. In my view, since he would be breaking a contract, id go overs and ask for: st. Kilda 2018 1st rd (pick 4) and 2019 1st rd (maybe 5-10) and seb ross with shiel and maybe our 2019 1st/2nd going back their way. Or maybe shiel alone for pick 4 and jade gresham (really rate the kid, its like another toby greene).

Would hate to lose him but gives us the opportunity in terms of salary cap to potentially retain kelly and cogs, both of whom i think are more damaging for us and are more prominent leaders.

If they want shiel at the end of this year by forking out a godfather offer, they will have to pay a godfather price on the trade table.

Do the Saints actually believe they will make a massive trade they have been talking trades up for the last 7 years and they have got Steele who is a solid player but if they want a star I think they should try for a Eagles package of Gaff and Sam Mitchell as an assistant and then pick up one of the king brothers

I think the Saints are an interesting team. Their recruiting has been poor in the past although I will admit i like their early selections this year. They have average across the ground (all lines). I think they should trade billings and go to the draft again this year. Billings could be great, but amongst average he is just that. It could work out best for all parties considering this s a stacked draft.

That said, they have a big war chest from all reports so I can see them throwing a monster offer at a shiel at some point. I think if you want quality you need to pay for it so that might be what it takes. Although if you cant sell the player on the hope of success (ala North) then we have seen even the big offer doesn't matter.

Personally, I think we could handle the loss of a Shiel type in that midfield now. Taranto is tracking to be better than Kelly and hopper has come on nicely. Obviously I would like to keep him as he is quality

Journalists throwing darts, I am waiting for an article about how Cripps wants out of the Blues because of the terrible results but not likely with the bias but I can hope and it is all just to generate hype over the game and hope for the fans to sell advertising and I would like to know what goes on in the meetings for some of the TV shows
Roos on 'On the Couch' with his pen pointing is such a choreographed move and if he did it when he was talking to me I would tell him to shove the pen there

What do you guys see the list needs are for this trade/draft period? I think we need to develop some more good mids, a key forward, a key defender and a ruck.

Apart from Sproule, the only other developing KPF we have is jack buckley. Tiziani is more a medium sized forward and if we draft peatling and/or walker this year, they will be vying for similar spots. Also to note delahunty will be coming through next year and looks promising but also 191cm - hoping he can grow 5cm and add to his frame to be another promising KPF for the future. I was thinking we could consider hugo munn from SA, looks to have the mongrel and agility to play a quicker Patton type role, standing at 198cm and 94kg. Both qualities we need since I feel Patton lacks the aggression and speed to become an A grade player. Munn also has a great contested mark and has a good leap on him with the occasional specky. Another we could consider as a project rookie or late draft is nathan kreuger (196cm, 86kg) who was passed up on the draft last year but he would need some work building his body since he is agile but would get crunched in AFL.

I think for ruck stocks, flynn the only developing genuine ruckman, we should either be looking/planning to trade for a preuss/darcy (unfortunately both contracted) or perhaps more likely matching a bid for briggs in the draft.

In terms of a key defender, would be looking mainly at Collins as a potential cheapy to fill the void in defence if Mohr retires. Otherwise we have strong depth in defence with Buntine (will likely get bumped out when Williams returns), Taylor, Cumming, Finlayson and Perryman.

Our current stock of young developing mids include shipley, bonar, setterfield and maybe cumming and perryman if you consider them mids - I see them more as defenders at AFL level. Thinking we lack a bit of outside class, quality ball users and endurance runners in this group (though shipley runs very well). My general vibe is that the best outside mids in the 2018 group will feature highly in the draft (Walsh, Rankine, Tarryn Thomas, Hill, etc.) and might be out of our reach if we dont have an active trade period. We could opt for some balanced mids who can still distribute very well like Rozee/RCD/Caldwell with our first and second picks but i reckon if anyone from the top slides we will go best available with our 1st pick.

Thoughts?

Our forward stocks are, imo, fine. Obviously we have Peatling and Walker coming through as academy selections if we want them. Walker is a less impactful De Goey imo playing as the Allies main target to moderate success, as being a second marking target with Murray Bushrangers having a really good past few weeks, doing this despite being smaller than a traditional KPF. Personally, I think you only take elite KPF prospects, which would rule Munn, Kreuger and probably any others available around our picks.

We have Keiran Briggs as another possible academy selection who is a Ruck and has had a fantastic year, despite being undersized he offers a lot around the ground with his tackling and second efforts. I'd rather bring him in than trade for a Preuss/ Darcy. Bailey Williams will be there around our first round selection as well which might be a bit of overkill and an over reaction but the option will probably be there

Our KPD stocks are fine; Davvis, Corr, Buntine, Finlayson, Taylor and Mohr can all play those roles

Our midfield stocks are fine imo, although theres a lot of quality in the top 15-20 mids that it wouldn't hurt taking one that's available. A big list strength of ours is balanced midfielders, guys like Kelly, Cogs, Shiel, Taranto, Setterfield and even Hopper can all play outside and inside roles so we may be able to just pick up the best available, assuming we get 14-18 with our pick Caldwell, O'Halloran, RCD, Stocker, Duursma, Butters, etc. would all be in that range I'd expect with RCD being my favourite of that lot
