If you've somehow added just about the entire GWS midfield in Shiel, Kelly, Scully, Coniglio (plus Cerra) why not continue and also add Hopper, Taranto, Martin, Dangerfield, Fyfe, Bontempelli, Mitchell, JP Kennedy, Gaff, Oliver, Treloar, Macrae, Merrett, Crouch, Neale, Zorko, Beams, Gray, Pendlebury...
Now you're talking!

Hey Funk. Re gws salary cap issues. Where has that been mentioned by someone in the know or reported? Im not doubting it, just keen to find out more on the subject. Have seen people mention it here but from all it can tell is its guess work.

Cheers

Can't remember specifically where I read it.

My guess is player Managers would be aware of it and quiet conversations are being had.

If it is true there will be consequences.

Doesn't specifically say a club can't match a bid disproportionately outside their cap … but its terms of reference are pretty clear in 17.5..

http://s.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL Tenant/AFL/Files/AFL-Rules-June-2017.PDF

The AFL is aware the whole way of the "how much's", on behalf of both clubs competing.

I had a look at 17.5 and i couldn't see anywhere, anything to do with the AFL investigating if the matching club can afford to match said offer.

Im aware that what im proposing holds some risk, as if Shiel or any player decided to accept their current clubs offer they would be stuffed. I only believe a club would do it if they were certain the player was leaving, if a club went down this path they obviously would not be able to play hard ball with a negotiating club as they would run the risk of negotiations falling over.

I just don't see the difference between GWS matching a rival offer knowing full well that their player is leaving and Richmond offering a big deal for Lynch. If Lynch chooses the Tigers they will trade out some players or delist players to fit him in, it doesn't make their current offer to him unfair or outside the rules.

For whatever reason i thought Knightmare was a lot younger.

Think it's the suit in that pic. This is one from last year:

Looks pretty young to me.

We need to stop talking like we are the standout frontrunners for every player.
People saying we should get gaff, were 4th in line
People saying we should get Lloyd, why would Sydney get rid of him
We aren’t the frontrunners for Sheil either. High, but not front

The problem we find ourselves in is that all of us North and St Kilda are apparently awash with cash but apparently we're not going to over pay players so that makes it bloody hard when you are the worst team in the comp to attract players.
Worse though is Hawthorn, Collingwood and Richmond obviously have a heap of room because they are all in the hunt for Lynch. These clubs are all a hell of a lot more appealing than us. The problem is only one will get Lynch and you can guarantee the other two will be all over Shiel next year.
That's not even mentioning Geelong or Essendon who are huge threats. We are in a tough position.

Number 1 goal: do NOT let bumbers get Shiel. We must somehow stop them improving their list with another a grader. We must be first to 17.

First let's get to 17 on the ladder

This is quite realistic for the now. As much as SOS and all of us know we have a massive gap in the 23 to 27 age group the likelyhood of fixing it with serious talent is so so slim. It would have been nice to get the guy I wanted last year of Devon Smith and maybe this summer Dylan Shiel or a Gaff but in reality no magic fixes. It is why that video of Bolton talking about our spine to build around our 20 to 21 years old is probably where we need to focus, if we cannot get an A grade 24 to 27 year olds we almost have to concede that age group will never be solved and let it naturally flow out for next 4 to 5 years. If that means pick 1, 20, 23, & 26 are all invested in draft and not trades so be it. Rather make out core group of 19 to 23 year olds super dooper talented than try to fill 24 and 27 year olds and our youth at same time and neither is filled right. The tough part of this path is half our own fan base at least do not have patience of this course and there is no way to sell it to broader fan base. Eighty percent of media that have no interest in genuine story of patience will focus on the short term pain to make it seem like this path is all wrong. Been doing it all year and will only increase next year if we only win 6 or less games. It really is up to the coaching staff and fitness group to get our youth all fit and even ahead of the development curve expected for next year. Nothing easy there.

This is singly the most intelligent quote I have seen across several forums. I have been a fan of the "trade number 1" for months, but this logical dissection of the situation has me now in the "best player" in the draft camp. Problem for me is, who TF is that young chap? Would still definitely trade a couple of the second rounders to gain another 10-14 range pick. And the idea of a priority pick after the bottom 8, has plenty of merit and actually counteracts the free agency debacle. Possible picks then would be 1, 9, 12ish (traded).

Great point DL. I have been thinking SOS is planning to do a two 2nd rounders for 1 top 10, if he can as well.
Knowing SOS it might even happen on draft night.

Yep he will likely have come close to terms with both the Swans and North about what such a trade will look like and then depending on how the early bids go, or what the buzz is prior to the first round, he will close a deal with either. They will likely need the points and need to pull the trigger before their F/S are bid on. If Swans get the Saints pick for Hannebery then they are the likely trade partner.

It would be good for us to be able to do a running list of players we've been connected to or may have reason to chase, although I feel the end netting may be skinnier than what we may expect.

1. Shiel..............The obvious one
2. Lloyd.............May work with a trade or if we somehow help The Saints with picks
3. Fasolo............I don't see it at all.
4. Setterfield......Nice try but may be a tough one to extract.
5. Wallis............Wouldn't say no, but somehow he's not quite the right fit for us.
6. Liberatore......Same as above but maybe even a more distanced.
7. May..............Just won't happen, nor a priority.

Not going to even bother dropping in names Lynch nor Gaff. Somewhat pointless.

Shiel & Lloyd seem to be the best immediate fits for us and if we somehow manage to reel in Shiel for the 2019 1st+, we'll be going to the draft with a very strong hand, currently #1, the likely #19, #23 and #26.
Still think the #1 could be converted to advantage whilst netting us the player we would have taken at #1 anyway.

Not out of the question we set-up the platform for the future via this draft/trade periods. Could be a good one.

I'm hoping Shiel stays at GWS for one more year and we have the money and show the nessesary improvement for him to come as a FA in 2019.

Has Dahlhaus re-signed? Adding he and Fasolo would give us an instant half forward flank boost. We have 3mil plus in the cap and should be able to offer a fair bit more than what the Cats would be offering.

I keep trying to play out trade scenarios but the priority pick fluctuations play too big a part. We could potentially go to North for their pick 9 if they think Thomas will get bid on before that.

Fasolo, Brodie, McGovern, Walsh, Roughy/Boak...whatever, just no more O'Sheas and Shaws
