Why are we hoping? Shiel is good but he aint a god! If its not meant to be then so be it
I tend to agree but I do understand the definitive aspect of if we get Shiel now we have another gun locked away.

I would however, rather take the punt on waiting til FA next year. We keep our 1st, have options to target a different FA if we please instead and the option to trade in a top line player like Shiel is still there if he takes a different direction.

Gaff wont be coming to Carlton, we are just too far away from success for us to be an option.
I just dont see GWS who are in a premiership window releasing a contracted player that will weaken their team, even if they got a 1st round pick in return when they are on the cusp of winning a flag and Shiel would play a pivotal role in this, why would they release him. If we were in the same situation i would be filthy if we risked a chance to get a flag even if it meant letting him walk for free the following year.

Agree with you re Gaff.

If GWS get in a serious TPP squeeze (as is being reported) they may have to let a player go.

If the AFL come to the party with a mid-first-round priority pick, that may make a Shiel-trade much more appealing. Presumably they drop those picks in just ahead of the finalists first picks.

Carlton get a mid-first-round PP.
Gold Coast get Band 1 compo for Lynch and a mid-first-round PP.

1 - Carlton
2 - Gold Coast
3 - Gold Coast
4 - Brisbane
5 - St Kilda
6 - Bulldogs
7 - Fremantle
8 - Adelaide
9 - Essendon
10 - North Melbourne
11 - Geelong
12 - Carlton (PP)
13 - Gold Coast (PP)
14 - Sydney
etc.
26 - Carlton
28 - Carlton

Send 26 and 28 to Sydney for 14. They get plenty of extra points for Blakey.
12 and 14 go to GWS for Shiel and Setterfield. They can use the picks or trade up via St Kilda or Freo who have nothing between their first picks and 50+.
Maybe even 1 to Brisbane for 4 and 24 if they're keen on Walsh.

Shiel
Setterfield
4 - Smith
24 - McHenry
~60 - Silvagni
Rookie - Hickmott
Free Agent - Fasolo
Free Agent - Dahlhaus?

2019 first rounder intact to go after Cerra or similar next year.

Way to be positive.
Realistic has nothing to do with positive. People on here last year said we were bound for finals or close to it.

Go to the predictions thread. Im pretty sure i said 17th or 18th. Either way it was easy to see.

Many of the reasons people on here are shaking their head at this season is because they were unrealistic. They hoped for too much too soon.

Call it being negative. But its not. I see our foundations and see where we are going. But to think we will skyrocket in 2019 is setting up unrealistic views of where we are at.

Best i see is us getting to 12th. But thats if practically everything goes our way. But thats just not realistic now is it

I would probably disagree on the point of Collins not being a need though.

It is a definite need, didn't mean to insinuate otherwise.

We've only got Rowe, ASOS and JGM as genuine key defenders and I'd say we're likely to lose two of them over the next couple of months.

Jones, Weitering and Plowman can all play that role but for mine their real strengths lie elsewhere.

I've written previously about targeting Hugh Goddard as a rookie to fill that very role, if the Saints are looking to get rid of him. Has had a rough time over the past few years with injuries, but really liked him a few years back and would be OK with taking him on as a rookie to see if we can get his body right.

Collins I'd absolutely look at, just not early in the ND, and certainly not with a pick inside the top 30. Think there are a number of better ways we can use those picks, whether that be package them together to move up the draft, or take a couple of nice prospects which there seems to be plenty of this year.

If it is a case of take him with one of those picks, or miss out on him altogether, I'd prefer the latter.

Is there any talk or suggestion of that we might rookie Sam Fisher from NB's?

I haven't been able to get to a NB game this year but it seems his performances have been strong and consistently improving and could be a valuable midfield soldier at AFL level. Still young and spent a couple of years in the swans system

Be good to get some more midfield depth especially considering he is developing in our very own backyard and would hate to see him kick on elsewhere

Been driving this bandwagon for a little while now. There's still some room for you on the bandwagon - hop on.

Not sure it'll happen but he's had a very good season - his back half of the year has been particularly strong - and that deserves to be recognized.

Would be very happy to take him as a rookie, and even prepared to take him late in the ND depending on how many picks we're going with.

Do you believe we'd be bottom 2 if we hadn't had 12-15 players injured most weeks?

Good on you for calling it, but I don't believe this year's result was as "obvious" as you claim.

You kind of have to always allow for injuries. Its beyond unrealistic to not get them. In a way we are beyond lucky they didn't occur to players such as cripps and charlie.

I based it on the facts we just weren't good enough to move up the ladder just yet with the amount of youth on our list along with quality leaders.

If doc didn't go down early i may have pencilled us in for another win. But to me we just weren't ready to move up the ladder in 2018.

Good for you.

Fixed anyway - had an extra Curnow in the side (not a bad thing).

For what it's worth, I don't think there'd be anything wrong with Simmo playing some VFL next year if the backline is fully fit. Docherty, Willo, Byrne, Plowman the future - odds are there's an injury most weeks though...

Yes! But many others are complaining about us not having something like Hodge for the lions. Now we seemingly want to have our closest thing to that floating around in the VFL.

Strangely with our 22 next year, I don't see O'Brien in it. At least not yet anyway. Simmo would likely play on and keep his spot until O'Brien is ripe for the picking (being a regular) when he retires. He'll continue to take him under his wing and ensure he'll step in like nothing much is lost.

Possibly.

I don't think the "Hodge-type acquisition" was specifically to play down back though - if anything people were looking for support at leadership at the other end.

At the end of the day, it's going to come down to who is fit and which combination of players performs best together.

Surely Suns don't get pick 3 for Lynch and another pick at the end of the first round as a Priority Pick.

Unless we get pick 2. ;)
Why wouldn't they?
If you lose a player to free agency you get compensation. A PP is given at the discretion of AFL and lately has been given at the end of the first round.

TDK & Schu 9/10 & 10/10 and they have not played 1 AFL Senior game

6.5/10 for LOB who has played 16 AFL games.

I think you are selling LOB very short.
I put the pick from SOS as 6.5/10 because he isn’t as good as he should be for a top 10 Pick. The reason he has played 16 games is because he is a top 10 pick. To be honest for quite a lot of that he wouldn’t have played if he was 24+. Look at the draft again. Would you even put him in the first round?

De. Koning is higher because not only does he suit our future needs well, but he is also a great player. Talls take a while to develop, so we might not see him for a while

Schu 10/10 because he is great for someone who went so low in the draft. I reckon he might be one of the best pick 70s from what I’ve seen.

If I had pick 10 again, I would still take LOB

Before Doc went down, I had us ar 7-9 wins, after that, 5-7.

Given the extent of injuries, as well as in game, 2 wins is not surprising

I already have us down for 7-9 wins for next year, but that could change, once all sides finalize their list

Hey Funk. Re gws salary cap issues. Where has that been mentioned by someone in the know or reported? Im not doubting it, just keen to find out more on the subject. Have seen people mention it here but from all it can tell is its guess work.

Cheers

This trade/draft period will have a big say but I can see anything between 6-12 wins depending on who we get and who's fit.
