Someone on the Port board posted an interesting stat about Gov sucking at defending a lead. Was gung-ho to get Watts on Gov and lead him to the footy all day. In contested situations Gov is a beast and a top tier KPD.

I'm surprised someone from the Port board was smart enough to post.

Strange to say he's not worth the money because he's not the strongest 1 on 1 player? So what, that's not his role. He is the best in the business at what he does, and that's near on irreplaceable. Why would we play him in a 1 on 1 role just to show he isn't as good at that? Then it's likely we may start losing. Strange logic.

Yes Adelaide appear to have gotten lucky with Doedee but he will be up there with Gov in a few years.

That being said, need to ensure it doesn't impact our ability to keep other players.

Damn, was hoping he'd be a beast.

Wouldn't have been far off the squad. They picked 17 underage players and aren't short on small forwards in this squad.

More keen to keep Gaff for less coin than Gov now.

Rotham I think will be similar to a Lever type after another preseason - can semi-fill the role that Gov plays now, obviously not to the same level but I reckon he has what it takes.

Just need to draft or trade in another tall lock down KPD and we are all good.

Gaff has been impressive this year and we need to keep strengthening the midfield not weakening it - even if he isn’t the big bodied bull we need.
Dude Rotham is more like a Mackie.

I'd be a lot less salty about either of these blokes leaving if they lifted a cup at the end of the season.

Sure he can intercept the ball well, but how many centre clearances does he win? Delist!

Mackie, Lever...there is not that much difference.

I saw Rotham go third man up in marking contests quite a lot in the Peel game and can see him playing that loose intercept marking role quite well once he gets a bigger body and some more confidence in it.

He won’t be a Hoover like gov is and mark everything that goes near him but I don’t think that is really that critical.

All I’m saying is defenders are easier to replace than elite mids or key forwards. They’re the guys you give million dollar salaries and long term contracts.

Let Gov go. Give a mil to Coniglio

Nah Lever is a lesser Gov.

Rotham should idolise shep but that still wouldn't make him a true intercepting player.

Don’t reckon you can really pigeonhole him as a particular player yet. I just think he has some attributes that will allow him to play an intercept/rebounding role at AFL level

Saints , North and Fremantle the three teams really keen on McGovern .

Might go to Fremantle but Saints with the salary cap to offer that 1.25m a season deal , North also but sounds like St Kilda are there in a big way $$$ .

So if these are the three teams, they are all crap and Gov would officially be classified as a whore selling his body to the highest bidder with no long term satisfaction.

Probably Fremantle is his main option maybe although Sydney have good form in this area .

I'm pretty confident we can get McGovern to sign on .

Seems unlikely we'd get that.
Adelaide got that for Lever! McLovin is 2 time all Australian and as a defender loses least one on ones in league. Best intercept defender in the league and his disposal for a key defender is a level beyond elite. I know Lever is younger but 3 years and certainly doesn't have those credentials.

North have officially said no thanks, they want mids. Think they think they're covered for key positions fwd n back.

They also got less than that for Dangerfield

Reckon us, Sydney and Freo are the only realistic ones (Sydney only because they’re reasonably successful). That being said don’t really see him leaving WA and it would be a risky move to swap for the rival team in a small city like this, he’d never hear the end of it.

If he wants to go then Barrass takes chb and eMac/schoey to fb, draft another kpd this year. Throw the money at Cogs and Swallow while we still have NN and Jk. Would be sad to see him go but he’s not the only one on the team. Better midfield would stop the reliance on him.

There is no way our club would let him go to freo. This is the same ploy his manager pulled with ballantyne going to us. I am 99% Gov will re-sign later in the year.

Just on that last point about impacting our ability to keep other players. When you think about how much cap space have we flushed down the dunny retaining list cloggers? I am talking about the Wellingham's, Hill types, Bennell, McGinnity types. Sure some don't cost much but draftees cost less and one thing this season has shown is that youthful enthusiasm brings energy to the entire list.

Looking forward for the six years we may have to pay Gov. Kennedy, Le cras, EMac, Schofield, Hurn, Hutchings and Masten will all retire or be delisted likely over the next three seasons. If we have to pay a proven gun $200k overs per year it simply means we don't keep two list cloggers for an extra year or two. The list cloggers get turned over and we draft kids or mature agers and they get a crack.

Instead of spending $250k on a Josh Hill for depth we draft a slightly struggling / injured Tim Kelly type and pay them $80k. Players like Gov, Lycett and Gaff get the $170k not a player like a Josh Hill.

I get your overall point but slotting Tim Kelly in there as your cheeky $80k option misrepresents it quite a lot haha. The tradeoff is more like Josh Hill vs a 5th rounder.
