The Western Bulldogs and Luke Dahlhaus have suffered an early hiccup in contract talks
SAM LANDSBERGER, Herald Sun

THE WESTERN Bulldogs are confident of retaining onballer Luke Dahlhaus despite an early hiccup in contract talks.

The Herald Sun understands the Dahlhaus camp is seeking a long-term contract as a reward for his eight years of service.

The Bulldogs would prefer to re-sign Dahlhaus on a shorter deal. The two parties have met twice and are yet to seriously discuss the financial component of his next contract.

Dahlhaus, 25, becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season but is a required player at Whitten Oval.

His status means Dahlhaus can walk to another club without the Dogs being given the opportunity to match a rival offer.

The ball magnet recently voiced his strong desire to play out his career at Whitten Oval.

“My manager and the club are still in talks, and it’s going to take a little time to get things done,” Dahlhaus said last month.

“But in saying that, the club is like my family now. I’ve been here eight years and I love it so much, so this is where I want to finish and play for the rest of my days.”

Dahlhaus qualifies for unrestricted free agency as a result of the mega contract Tom Boyd signed.

The Dogs significantly front-ended Dahlhaus’s current deal to accommodate Boyd’s salary.

Dahlhaus’s first year was his richest and he will take home the fewest amount of dollars in 2018.

That means he sits outside the club’s top 25 per cent of money earners this year, earning him unrestricted free agency.

Dahlhaus has traditionally recommitted early in the year but is happy to wait before inking his next deal.

Dahlhaus has not spoken to any other club and the durable midfielder has missed just six games since 2012.

Dahlhaus finished outside the top 10 in last year’s best-and-fairest for the first time since he became a regular in the Bulldogs team.

Dahlhaus made his debut in 2011 and then finished fourth in 2012, sixth in 2013, fourth in 2014 and 2015 and sixth in the 2016 premiership season before taking a tumble last year.

Dahlhaus received one coach’s vote in both the Round 3 and Round 7 wins this year.

The tough midfielder has only kicked 1.3 this season but collected 29 disposals in Saturday’s win against Gold Coast.
Time to pounce on Dahl

A lot to play out and positions will change but this is the type of thing we should be looking to do with sides finishing near the top end.

Trade down to WC 1st rounder which GC have for a player like Fiorini.

Gives GC a great hand at the supposed super draft with possibly 2 picks inside 10.
We get points for Thomas,
Get a FA, let’s say Gaff.
You go to next year with Fiorini, Gaff Thomas, hopefully Scott and Crocker.

Now I expect WC to slide but this is just an example of what we could and should be looking to pull off.

Keep in mind the eagles will need to up the ante to keep McGovern (Freo are going hard from what is being reported) might not have the space to go too far to keep gaff

Everyone here probably knows this, but remember that under the old 'matching' F/S system, bidding took place before the trade period and as such f/s candidates were assigned to the next notional pick (ala L-Mac).

Trading our first for a gun and using later picks/points for TT = ftw.

It’s the blessing in disguise. With more academy kids coming through they will probably change it back soon!

I feel like there’s been a big change of plan here based of 2 or 3 games and that’s a worry.

We were supposed to be building some North grown organic talent based of draft pics with the veterans there to assist. Something to last us years of good footy at the expense of a couple now.

Now it seems like they want a top up player so we can push for the 8 before the current vets get older.

If we get TT however then giving up the rest of the pics might be worth it?

I don't think there's been a change in plan.

I think we're merely creating options should certain scenarios play out.

Who knows what happens from here.

Simply, we are well and truly tracking ahead of our own development curve.

The onset of our midfield, most notably Jed, Jy and BennyJ has given us new found competitiveness. Who would if thought Jed could be this good? And he is still going to get better.

We however are short on depth in the midfield. I believe FA can solve this for us, as well as getting a gun like TT and adding Bailey Scott who is also tracking very very nicely, at years end. Kelly next year is the icing!
Also we have Ahern who is pushing hard for selection.

We have some good kids in the VFL that require further development and hopefully they will come on in time and push for selection.

Playing Ziebell up forward has changed our dynamic down there. If Wood stays on the park then we have another star down there, with Garner also to come in

Down back we are looking solid. Tas and Scooter are at career best form. Maj is developing and is actually looking like he may belong, BMac is really looking more and more like our next full back! EVW is going to be a general down back.

Perhaps our list isn’t as bad as we think it is.

Dahihaus is a Porsche 924.
A poor man's Porsche. Save ya money & get something better.

We currently have room for a "poor man's Porsche", if that's all we can get.

Too many rumours for the drug part not to be true. Buyer beware.

Pffft, not even an issue.

How many here would have knocked back Ben Cousins in 2005 before his social life became headline fodder in the tabloid press? Answer: ZERO.

Dahl is a prick of a bloke, can't kick and loves drugs. Do not want.
The quintessential downhill skier. Do not want.
