When he was with us Fagan was singing his praises saying he was on par with some of the game's greats. Don't know the stats but key forwards that high usually end up pretty good dont they?
We don't really know with Bailey, looks fantastic and l have every hope that he is a fantastic player for us but we thought some of our other small players were going to be good too like Green and the other Red headed guy who went to richmond after we delisted him. Golby had a great few seasons then went off the cliff.

Oh man Golby isn't really a comparison. Bailey a way better player already and as a first round pick you would expect him to be so.

I don't ever know if Schache will get the competitiveness required to be a successful key forward. If you don't have a weapon like great contested marking, or endurance or speed you at minimum have to be very competitive and he just isn't there.

You look for sings and with Schache there really aren't many. Will be just a player. Bailey will be a very good player.

Even the Bulldog fans don't have high hopes for him and have commented on his lack of aggression. Early days but the signs aren't good. Still at worst he'll be a decent forward capable of kicking the odd bag

Like Aish; Schache’s still getting a game somehow, so they’re clearly doing something right in their respective coach’s minds.

On watching the first replay Mcstays game really stood out. On watching the second replay Baileys game stood out. He is a footballer. Some of the little things he does and reading of the play is superb for such a young player. Just picture him in 50 games time.

The knock on him pre-draft was that his kicking was awful. I reckon he is one of our better kicks now.

He hasn't yet shown a capacity to kick a bag. Averaged less than a goal a game for us and is averaging very slightly above a goal a game for the Bullies. 40 games, 42 goals. Averaging 6 kicks per game. He will be 22 this year.

Didn’t see the Dogs game but a Footscray friend who had been dubious on him said he was “crashing packs” .Anyone see this ?
To be fair he did show more aggression but I just don't see him as a forward who is going to kick you a bag. And crashing packs for a key forward is overrated in my view. Taking contested marks is what you look for and he doesn't show any signs of improving in that respect.

He meant Schache sat on a teammate's backpack.

Agree, did see a bit more aggression but he has a a fair way to go yet. He may end up being a serviceable forward but he is still work in progress.

A pretty obvious target I had forgotten about is 2MP - out of contract this year but it looks like he is going to sign an extension at GC (https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-03-01/suns-set-for-plenty-more-of-the-wright-stuff).

If that doesn't happen though we should be banging down the door - he would complement our forward/ruck division perfectly. Can't see it happening though.

I'd prefer to target Ainsworth who was/is a Lions fan. We need Lyons to get in his ear:moustache:

Ainsworth not out of contract until 2020, and I'm not sure he was actually a lions fan - he was just open to coming here. I don't think we have the picks to get him this year anyway as GC really can't afford to lose a contracted player to a team an hour down the road.

I'm not a fan of 2MP, too one paced and cumbersome, once Stef retires we'll have Archie, the Big O and Ballenden who from reports is quite handy in the ruck, also although we have turned him into a KPD Matty Eagles was a ruckman when drafted from The Recruit. Maybe Tom Fullarton as well as an athletic Paddy Ryder type.

I must admit I don't focus on their games but I don't recall him doing much ruck work. And as a forward I think we have enough other options.

Not sure I’ve seen the same reports about Ballenden. Seems timid like Freeman. He looks good presenting at the ball carrier but I haven’t seen what others are getting excited about.

Pre his drafting, if IIRC he did some rucking.
Spent a little bit of time in the ruck in JLT2.
He didn’t look too bad, but I don’t think he was rucking when Gawn was, only when their relief ruck was.

I'm thinking more a 70% forward 30% ruck role which McStay and Hippy don't and shouldn't do. Big O's done an ok job there but that isn't his role long term. I haven't seen anything yet of ballenden and FUllarton to justify relying on them to provide it. Fullarton in particular seems like a big stretch - maybe he turns out great but he's played basically no footy until making the switch from basketball.

As for him being one paced I'm not too worried about that as Hippy is more than athletic and I think he is quick enough where it counts. 2MP is a way better contested mark.

He rucked a bit in his best year (2017) where he also kicked 31 goals. As far as our other options I'm not convinced. I am a big fan of McStay but he is still unsigned (not worried and I don't like Big O spending too much time up forward.

Regardless as I said earlier it seems like he will re-sign. But I do think we could use another quality tall forward/forward ruck so he would be another option to pursue if he was available along with Himmelburg from GWS.

Competitiveness/getting into the game was from memory his problem heading into his draft year, and lead to the Academy coach moving him into defence.

Ainsworth was not a Lions fan. But he did say in his draft year that he’d like to come to Brisbane, as he already had ties with the Vic Country boys we drafted the year before.

But he’s fully invested in GC. He’s one of the younger guys that verbally went Lynch when Lynch told the playing group he was leaving. Ainsworth and Bowes are very much the young leaders in their club.

His family have moved to GC, so there’s no go home factor with Ainsworth either.

Prior to drafting Ballenden, I thought he was more a ruck/forward than a forward/ ruck, if you know what I mean. Given his height (200cm), I would like to think he'll be competing for that second ruck spot that plays more minutes in the forward line once Stef retires. IIRC, he has also played across the CHB line too, so he seems to have more flexibility than a lot of other keys on our list. In short, I don't think we need 2MP at all either.
