2 year deal at Collingwood is probably worth three anywhere else given all the freebies he would get from Eddie et al.

Que sera.

With so many academy, NGA, f/s and a few dozen Gold Coast compo picks clogging up the draft these days, picks in the second round are worth less than ever. Hopefully we identify this and try to put a couple of picks together and move up the order. We only need 2 draftees and we should aim to get the first of those as high as possible. It also makes it hard to accept anything less than pick 25 for Lewis Taylor - that's likely to be pushed out to at least 30.
IMO it could give less value to higher picks, as clubs need to match if they want their player.

Good players could slip down the draft as NGA's are bidded on. Possibly make a player cheaper.

Im pretty confident about Brodie Smith still, I said a few weeks ago that it was floating around for months during the season and some players at an outside club were surprised media took so long to get wind of it.

One more thing, If Elliot has made the phone call to Melbourne saying he won't be there next season surely that means he has made his decision and just telling the people whom it concerns, feels like its a matter of time before it gets revealed (hopefully today!)

Elliot's played a touch over 30 games in 4 years . I'm happy to have him if we tick it off but wouldn't get involved in any bidding war and not upset if it doesn't happen . He's not essential for us.

One thing I'm sure our guys would be on to is the ruck situation. People don't realise how big a hole it leaves when Stef retires. I'm hoping he's got two more in him

It is starting to look like Elliott is really making a decision between club loyalty and getting out of the Melbourne footy bubble. If it were all about contract length, the Dees would be in the race. I suspect non-footballing factors are at play here.

Brisbane hope to land Birchall
By Jake Niall
Brisbane Lions have offered Hawthorn free agent Grant Birchall a one-year deal.
They are hopeful the four-time premiership veteran will follow in the footsteps of former teammate Luke Hodge.
However, Birchall would not have no guarantee of a potential off-field role as Hodge did. Hodge signed a two-year deal, inwhich he would have coached had he not played in the second year.
Birchall will be though, in effect, an on-field coach with the Lions should he agree to join them.

May be that but could also just be he doesn't see the Dees as being a finals contender. Not sure of his motivations with regards to winning but seems to be a high priority for most players (as you'd hope!).

Don't think he would change clubs if he was staying in Melb. They would have to pay him big bucks to lure him. Reckon we are a chance for the sea change, or he stays where he is.

It seems counterintuitive but publicly narrowing it down to 2 actually could still be part of squeezing Collingwood for extra cash. Makes it look like it is crunch time.

75/25 Collingwood/Brisbane IMO.

Apparently two of Elliott's brothers live in Queensland. Anyone know if they are based in South East QLD and whether that's a big factor in his decision?

I don't get Grant Birchell if it's strictly playing. Honestly a Head scratcher. That would mean we are offering 5 players with Chronic injury issues (McCarthy, Adams, CEY, Elliot and Birchell) all list spots in 2 off seasons. The first 4 I get, but I do not understand Grant Birchell for a second.

I have been thinking about the ruck situation and agree it seems odd we haven't made any moves here. I think Big O is good enough to be a number 1 ruck TBH, he will never be a Stef (agile below his knees) but makes up for it by offering genuine marking down the line. Then we keep developing Archie as a back up - he is your more agile ruck, he offers nothing in terms of marking though, which is a but worry.

I think just another recycled ruck is in order at this stage, might even look at the draft.

If we get elliot and move bundy and lewy on and then if charlie, elliot and McCarthy get injured, which is a possibility with their history. Who do we have to replace them at a standard commensurate with a top 4 team shooting for the cup. Same with walker if mcstay, adams, andrews or gardiner go down. I think we have to be very careful trading/delisting our depth. Our great run injury wise over the last 2 or 3 years cant last. Should we lose 4 or 5 best 22 players thru injury next year i fear a big drop down the ladder if we dont have quality cover. Richmond this year lost quite a few best 22 players early for extended periods, rance for the season, they had quality depth to come in and keep them in contention. We need that. We have been lucky so far trading in injury affected players, that luck cant last.

I'd rather BASTINAC over Birchall tbh.
Me too, i find the birchall trade a bit puzzling. Another injury prone player. We seem to be picking up a lot of these kinds of players. I hope it doesnt come crumbling down. Re basti, i think i read a while ago he has a gig lined up in the wafl. Is that right or am i wrong. I do hope he plays on somewhere.

This logic doesn't make sense. Aside from many others, think about our last 2 big trades to Collingwood; Aish & Beams. They certainly didn't make a decision (or make it known) 2 weeks before end of the trade period. There would be dozens of examples of players deciding (or making that decision known) at the 11th hour.
He doesn't need to be here, and doesn't need to make a personal statement to Collingwood, that's what managers are for. In fact, given his shyness of media, it's probably his preference to have it announced and done while he's out of the country.

All that said, I don't believe he is coming, until the paperwork is signed. Nothing is done, until it's done. I'd say he is a 50/50 prospect at this stage.
Ok you think my logic doesnt make sense, thats your opinion. My comment was just MY personal opinion. Be a boring world if we all think the same.
