How much does the draft going back to one night devalue the first pick of round 2?
I was thinking the same thing but I would hope teams have plans in place should a player slide, will make it a tense few minutes if multiple teams come with offers to trade up or alternatively want to try and trade down.

Wouldn't get too attached to the idea pick 8.

Any reason why?

Nothing official yet but it is being reported by multiple different journalists. Even if Carlton is just using it as a diversionary tactic, still may be some sense in Essendon trading pick 7 to us for them as a way to satisfy GWS for Caldwell.

At this point I'd be mildly surprised if we didn't trade up or into next year somehow. Makes way too much sense with the AFL confirming they will require 3 draft picks and us likely to take an academy player as well as upgrade Fullerton, using up 2 of those spots.

Picking up another highly rated mid would give us some great midfield depth

First string; Neale, Lyons, McCluggage, Zorko, Berry

Backup; Robbo, Bailey, CEY, Matho (would love a couple to jump into this category eg. Rayner, ESmith, Dev or Cockie)

Rotations; McCarthy, Rayner, Ah Chee

Developing; ESmith, Robertson, Cockatoo*, pick 8*

Potentially; McFadyen, Joyce, TBerry

Sounds like the potential pick swap with Carlton is contingent on the AFL loosening the requirement that each club picks up 3 players in the National Draft.

That is not what I read at all - given our list spots we don't have room to make more than 3 picks (including a Fullarton upgrade) so trading up makes even more sense. Pick 8, blake coleman and Fullarton seems reasonably likely if we can get the trade done. Otherwise we will need to trade one of those first rounders anyway or not draft coleman.

If they relaxed the rules on 3 draft picks that would give us more scope to trade in players, but the AFL has confirmed to Tom Morris that they won't relax it.

We may want to trade up. I'd be very surprised if we weren't. Trouble is you need another club to agree to it and historically clubs usually want to move up the order than down. Maybe this year, there's a few more clubs who could benefit from moving down, but there's so many moving parts, especially with what Essendon are trying to do. I also think quite a few clubs will be trying to move into next years draft where the talent pool will hopefully be a little easier to evaluate.

That media report seemed like something leaked to put pressure on Essendon more than anything else.

I agree with you re it being a media report, I guess I still think theres a decent chance the bombers would be willing to split the pick once it is traded or to split pick 7.

If I’m the Bulldogs, I would want Essendon’s future first round pick.

If I’m GWS, I’d rather a late first round pick this year, rather than a current or future second round pick.

If I’m Essendon I want Carlton’s first round pick, and willing to send my second round pick back.

What Tom14 said.

Rookie upgrades count as a pick, as you use a late, late pick to make the upgrade.

So realistically we only need to make two live selections if we’re upgrading Fullarton to the senior list.

Will Phillips at our future pick 8....
Ugle-Hagan and Campbell will be matched though. I don't think Phillips lasts to 8.

Honestly I'd rather just stick with our existing picks and snatch up whoever slides, but it's unlikely we'd use both picks I suppose.

Yep, pick 8 will slide to 10 Atleast.
You would think he will be gone by then.
Stranger things have happened, I guess.

And 18 and 19 will likely slide to 22 and 23.

And as I’ve been told so many times, it doesn’t matter how far our picks slide, we’re still picking from the same pool.

I’d rather pick 7 or 8.

You look at AFL Draft Central’s top 18 players, and they have 5 nga kids, and a third tall forward who has had two knee reconstructions.

That reduces the pool down to 12 players.

In the bottom half of those 12 players are two tall defenders, and a rebounding third tall defender.

If we’re looking at mids, it really comes down to 3 players.

Tanner Bruhn, Nathan O’Driscoll and forward mid Archie Perkins.

Of the 3, O’Driscoll would be my pick.

I would say it’s very unlikely any of them slide to our pick 18.

Can send him to half back instead.. I read somewhere he can play as general defender too.
Will be adding another to an already crowded and probably the most competitive area in our squad.

...and will be competing for the same position.

Realistically with the nature of our list currently, anyone we bring in via the draft is going to be competing for a spot in the side with players already on our list.

I wonder with his endurance and athletic ability, as well as his willingness to fight for the contested ball, whether he'd be a good replacement on the wing for Robbo (with the way we utilise our wingers at the contest).

Quite a few draft watchers believe that’s where O’Driscoll should start at AFL level.

I don’t believe Robertson and O’Driscoll would be competing for the same position long term.

I believe they would compliment each other nicely.

Long term, they would replace Neale and Lyons.

My view of O’Driscoll is that he’s a little like Dangerfield and a little like Yeo. But he doesn’t have the ability to go forward like Dangerfield.

He’ll be that big bodied mid that can scoop the ball up, and using his power and acceleration, burst from a pack and send the ball forward.

O'Driscoll would be nice and all but my man-crushes are Jack Carroll and Isiah Winder.
I don’t get the Jack Carroll love here.

Was it just because someone mentioned he moves somewhat similar to McCluggage?

You watch highlights of Finlay Macrae, and he’s got that same ability, when in traffic, to side step or turn and have time to find the right kick, that Hugh and Lachie Neale have.

Carroll is not in McCluggage’s class, not even close. Otherwise he’d be rated a top 5 prospect.

I believe some of the SA and WA kids have benefited a lot from the Vic kids not playing.

Most notably Caleb Poulter, Jack Carroll and Brayden Cook.

We haven’t seen any potential bolters or late improvers from Vic, let alone see if some of the likely types were able to take that next step playing in a preferred position now that they were out of the shadows of the 2019 draft class.

Isiah Winder I can understand. He’s a jumping jack highlight real. But where does he play at AFL level?

I do like him but Isn't the knock on O'Driscoll his disposal? I suppose that can always be improved in an AFL environment though.

As I said before my dream although unlikely scenario is Phillips, more realistic Bruhn... if we can trade up.

Couldn’t be much worse than Zac Baileys in his draft year
