IMO we should err on the side of generosity with the academy, especially with rookie spots. Nothing will build participation in the academy more than kids seeing their peers getting a crack at an AFL spot.
I disagree. I want my team drafting the best talented juniors.

Our academy kids aren’t any different from every other kid in the country.

Talent will out.

Can’t find the Age article. Here’s Fox’s.

What has to be remembered is that all Rookie salaries (the actual rookie salary component if they’re paid more) come out of the soft cap.

So do teams prioritise extra players on their list, or coaching, development or medical staff, etc.
Still completely incomprehensible that these weren't agreed and final before the trade period started

Agreed. If they're good enough, they'll get drafted.

The club has done that in the past and its come back to bite them when the academy boys drafted don't come up to afl standard. Don't think being in the Lions Academy holds any weight if you cant mix it with the other kids in the draft.

Ya just never know.
With list sizes to be reduced, it is possible that clubs only need to take one pick in this years draft as a minimum. If that's the case then the draft could be over by pick 60.

Could be over by pick 18😂 😉

I am not advocating drafting substandard players. I just feel there are benefits to both the club, and QLD footy, if we "reserve" a rookie spot for an academy kid, if he is deemed to have the qualities to make it at AFL level.

So, who are these kids that got a free ride, and which stars did we miss out on by giving them a chance?

Free ride are your words mate. There are plenty of academy kids that didn't make it into AFL standard as I said. Thats all.

We have also done very nicely out of the academy kids we have picked and if anything I think our academy kids often are judged more harshly by the Lions than by others. I would hope that for a fair assessment and if the draft grades are equal or very close to the academy kids would be favoured.
If they are good enough, its not just the Lions who will be interested as shown by: Hipwood, Cumberland who were first chosen by Richmond as examples. I'm sure the investment put in by the Lions would be carefully considered when looking at all academy kids. The fact is, no draftee will be picked up unless they have faith & confidence they are good enough to make it in the AFL.

There are plenty of late draft and rookie picks that do not make AFL standard as well.

That is it mate. Any late pick/rookie is a raffle ticket. What I said was there are benefits, if these one of these late picks are fairly equally rated, give the academy kid a shot. Thats all.

I’m sure the club wouldn’t risk letting such kids potentially slide towards the rookie draft.

Once we make our last pick in the draft, any club after our pick could select such academy kids.

Remember the academy now goes to U19’s, so kids effectively have two draft years.

If kids go undrafted in their U18 year, they can return to the academy and we still retain the same draft rights to them.

Which is exactly what occurred with Keidean Coleman.

I hope that we offer a rookie spot to a mature-age ruck as back up to Oscar. Admittedly, Archie hasn't had a chance to show his capability, but it would worry me if Oscar went down and we only had him, Fullarton or Ballenden to call on for an extended period.

With all due respect to Martin who was a wonderful servant, IMO him being at the restarts during the finals really highlighted how quickly the clearance ascendency can swing when the opposition ruck is up and going.

I am not sure who might fit the bill, and if there are any available with previous AFL experience, but it would certainly allay some fears if we were able to recruit one.

Isiah Winder is the one I'm hoping for with our pick. Would add a big point of difference to our side as a utility. His athleticism and skill set would allow him to play forward, back or off a wing. Reminds me in style of a young Gavin Wanganeen and obviously you'd be very, very happy if he became half the player Gavin was.

What's the knocks on him?

From what I've read defensive running, however, as an ultra attacking player in junior's that doesn't surprise me much. He lays a lot of tackles so will learn the importance of an offensive/defensive balance once in the AFL system. Was finding 25+ possessions and kicking goals from the midfield at Colts level in WA and then played off a half back flank when called up to the WAFL senior's and used his run and elite kicking skills off half back. Can also play as a small forward so could become a very handy utility for us.

If we were to draft Winder in addition to Nakia Cockatoo and Blake Coleman we'd be adding another three indigenous players to our list which would be fantastic and help off set the departure's of Bundy and Cox.

Doesn't sound like he would be available at pick 25..

Mods - if this is too close to a political debate, please feel free to delete this post. No issues at all.

Genuinely interested to know why you view that as fantastic. Regardless of anyone's thoughts on affirmative action (not trying to get into that here), I generally don't think of it as a consideration for AFL lists, given that Indigenous players are significantly over-represented in the AFL compared to Australian society. I know the AFL have made it known quietly that each team should always have at least one indigenous player, but beyond that...

Is there any specific reason you're keen to increase the proportion of Indigenous players on our list? If it's just "increased diversity on the team" with no specific motivation, feel free to say so and I'll happily drop it. Significant issue, and keen to listen more when thoughts differ from my own.
