I agree but we have a lot of problems with our current list. We lack good tall marking targets up forward. We lack genuine small pressure forwards. We lack good ball use and speed from the midfield. And we're probably one good intercept marking KPD short too.

Talented KPP are much harder to come by than the others on that list. McDonald would be my #1 target but his recent form likely means one of Adelaide, North or Sydney* take him before us. From there it's probably Hollands. From there the pool gets muddied. It'll come down to who we rate highest.

Agree re key defender. But not RE key forward. Be thrilled to get McDonald. Our forward line and marking in general is also a disaster.

I think like most the idea of McDonald or Hollands hold most appeal. But they are unlikely to reach us unless we drop to 17th or at least 16th

The 2 are totally different players and Anderson is playing in one of the hardest spots on the ground in a still developing team. Just wait till he has another year or 2 in the AFL system. He's still gonna be gun and I'm still sore we didn't get his FS rights.

Think our party is going to be spoiled by the Kangaroos on draft night. Think they'll be all in for Hollands and most hawks seem on the I'd love Hollands wagon right now. We might be back in the picture this week if the Kangas get over the Suns but I think Kangas are rolling over so Suns would likely prevail. Swans looks unlikely to win another game this year.. We might pick up 2 wins (GC and Crows)...might be reaching for O'Driscoll and hope he turns into Bont MK2.

Doesn’t it just depend on his upside? If we see his upside as being a solid midfield accumulator, I agree that’s not what we need. We have a few of those types already and even if a good 200 gamer, I’d rather we punt on a KPP or dynamic type.

But being small doesn’t mean that’s the ceiling. Ablett, Neale, Mitchell, Shuey, Rowell etc. A smaller midfielder can be elite but you’d like to see an elite attribute beyond just accumulation and endurance (ie. skills, smarts, stoppage craft, goalkicking, speed, leadership)

The reality is at present - after Campbell and JUH - we are looking at pick 6. He might be the best available at that pick. Hollands, McDonalf unlikely to slide that far

You have to look at players as individuals but you also have to look at them in the context of the league and history when estimating the likelihood of a player being a good choice at a given pick. As an example, For players of that height in the top 100 clearance players in the league, they get just as many cleaners as taller players. But there are far fewer We of them in the league indicating the likelihood you get an average clearance midfielder is lower with no particular payoff in terms of better performance than taller mids. So in the top five you are looking for someone to give you the best chance of landing a good player height is going to count against a player unless they have demonstrated they are more likely than others to perform better for someone of their height. Most sub 180cm player play hff/fp regardless of their performance in the midfield in under 18s. So you have to consider how a player is going to go at afl level and not just their performances in under 18s.

Yeah I'm talking live picks. Fingers crossed. We need mid depth. We need to move on guys like Shiels out of there now too.

Yep always go BPA. Hopefully the cards fall our way and someone above us slips up and a kid falls right into our laps. We all know god is a Hawthorn fan so I'm bloody confident.

This is just a Big Footy top 4 - Vic kids have not even played this year so at this stage there is no actual top 4

Absolutely agree about the holes in our list

I reckon if we grab an elite mid who can kick, it helps out our forward line deficiencies too
If we grab a KPF, with Worpel or Mitchell kicking it to him, the boy better be Dunstall-like!

So we are better off fixing our midfield first

I'm actually starting to warm to the idea of Granger-Barrass. A good KPD that judges the ball beautifully and take intercept marks is invaluable in the modern game. Frost/Hartley are good defenders but have flaws, Frawley is on his last legs and there are queries over Kosi. Could potentially even do a Naughton and turn him into a forward since he reads the ball so well. If we end up with Pick 5-6 and McDonald/Hollands are gone I'd be giving it serious thought.

I think he is a great prospect. Would be stoked to get him. Reads it in flight so well.

If we rate player A higher than player B and player A is a mid and player B is a kpf then take player A regardless of our need for a kpf.

Best available player sounds great in theory but if you're comparing two players of the same type it's obviously subjective as it is but once you're comparing a small forward with a KPD say or a winger with a ruckman it becomes apples and oranges.

Back in 2004 from what you read Clarko said get me two keys...not best available...cos that might well have been Bucky's little housemate who had a stellar career at Richmond.

We've got Adelaide next week and Gold Coast in the final round - those are winnable.

In comparison, Sydney and North Melbourne have a tougher draw with less 'winnable' games, however, who really know with this season.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Take him if Campbell, JUH, Hollands & McDonald are gone; and before Thilthorpe and Phillips. Could be our next McGovern (WC one). Think he’d be an excellent choice.

I think we need a lot, and not just mids. There’s a reason BB is playing in KPB. If we somehow nabbed Williams, then the need for an explosive mid with our first would (ever so slightly) diminish.
